Men's Soccer (5-1-2, 1-0) Rallies Past Brandeis in Lone Contest, Returns to National Poll
The Wheaton College men's soccer team, which is ranked 22nd nationally and third in New England by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), picked up a 2-1 victory over regionally-ranked Brandeis University on Sunday during its lone contest. During the week, the Lyons earned their first national ranking since October 2, 2007.
Against the Judges, who are tied for 10th in the NSCAA's regional poll, Wheaton overcame a six-day layoff to continue its best start since 2004. Freshman Chris Thomas (Cumberland, ME/Phillips Academy) scored his first collegiate goal in the 33rd minute to knot the contest, and sophomore Eric Driscoll (Lexington, MA/Lexington) found the back of the net in the 53rd minute to put the Lyons on top. Driscoll's marker was the difference, as three of his four career goals have gone down as game-winners. Sophomore Cole Davidson (Needham, MA/Salisbury School) made two saves.
After Wheaton's freshmen, the Class of 2011, scored 28 of the team's 45 goals and recorded 34 of 50 assists last season, the class has played a role in 18 of 19 tallies thus far, with 17 goals and 15 assists.
