Field Hockey (2-1) Goes 1-1, Downs Simmons Before Falling to Top-Ranked Bowdoin

The Wheaton College field hockey team went 1-1 last week, defeating homestanding Simmons College, 3-1 on Tuesday before falling at Bowdoin College, 6-0 on Sunday. Bowdoin is ranked first in the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) poll and won the 2007 NCAA Tournament title.

Senior Alisa Ardito (Branford, CT/Branford) had a goal and an assist at Simmons, scoring 4:30 and 5:22 into the contest before helping extend a 2-1 lead in the second half by dishing off to junior Alex Block (Saratoga, CA/Saratoga) for a 63rd-minute marker. Classmate Andrea Bagley (Foxboro, MA/Foxboro) made six saves for the Lyons, who held a 26-7 advantage in shots.

At Bowdoin, Bagley made 18 saves, the most by a Lyon keeper since September 10, 2006, when Mary Catherine Boll '07 had 19 at Bowdoin. Wheaton was outshot, 36-6.

Ardito is second in program history in career assists (24), needing two to tie the record. She also stands third in points (72) and fourth in goals (24).

Men's Soccer (2-0-1) Downs Bridgewater State in 2007 NCAA Tournament Rematch

The Wheaton College men's soccer team, which is ranked sixth in New England by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), picked up a 2-1 win at Bridgewater State College on Wednesday in a rematch of the teams' 2007 NCAA Tournament first-round contest. The Lyons were also slated to play Roger Williams University on Saturday, but the contest was postponed until a later date.

Wheaton improved to 15-0 all time against the Bears since the teams first met in 1992 behind sophomore Josh Solomon's (Acton, MA/Acton-Boxboro Regional) first career multi-goal game. Solomon's 13th-minute marker made it 1-0 versus the hosts, who are ranked ninth in the region, and he countered an 81st-minute tying goal with the winning tally at 83:09. Sophomore Cole Davidson (Needham, MA/Salisbury School) turned aside three shots in net.

After Wheaton's freshmen, the Class of 2011, scored 28 of the team's 45 goals and recorded 34 of 50 assists last season, the class played a role in all seven tallies thus far, with six goals and six assists.

Women's Soccer (3-1) Goes 1-1, Including Defeating Fourth-Ranked Western Connecticut

The Wheaton College women's soccer team, which is ranked 13th in the country and third in New England by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), went 1-1 last week, including defeating visiting fourth-ranked Western Connecticut State University, 1-0 on Saturday. The Colonials were also ranked first in the region. The Lyons previously fell at Worcester State College, 1-0 on Wednesday, as their program-record-tying 36-game regular-season unbeaten streak came to a halt.

Against the Lancers, who won the Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Tournament and went to the NCAA Tournament each of the past four seasons, Wheaton yielded a 23rd-minute marker and was blanked despite a 21-12 shot advantage. Freshman keeper Kasey Frasier (Bennington, VT/Mount Anthony Union) made three first-half saves before classmate Lindsay Leddy (Warwick, RI/Wheeler School) had five stops in the second stanza.

Freshman Emily Vincunas (Granville, MA/Wilbraham & Monson Academy) netted her first collegiate goal during the 17th minute against Western Connecticut State, helping Wheaton down a team that went to last year's NCAA Tournament Final Four. Vincunas was assisted on the critical tally by senior Jessica Bramucci (Ludlow, MA/Wilbraham & Monson Academy) and junior Rosie Levy (Torrance, CA/Chadwick School). Leddy recorded her second shutout thanks to four stops.

Wheaton has posted seven shutouts in its past nine games dating back to last season, as well as yielded just three goals over the last 1,381:39 during a 16-contest span. Sophomore Melida Alvarez (Saugus, MA/Buckingham Browne & Nichols) remains ninth in program history with 25 career goals, having done so in 27 career games, and has posted 11 game-winning tallies.

Women's Tennis (3-0) Blanks Gordon for Third Straight Shutout to Begin Season
