Field Hockey (8-3, 1-0) Continues Best Start Since 1995 Season with 2-0 Showing at Home

The Wheaton College field hockey team continued its best start since the 1995 season by winning a pair of home games last week, downing Bridgewater State College, 2-0 on Tuesday before emerging victorious in its New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) opener over Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), 2-1 on Saturday.

In winning for the sixth time in their last seven meetings with Bridgewater State, the Lyons held a lead for exactly 57 minutes, as freshman Alex Block (Saratoga, CA/Saratoga) tipped junior Sara Dimick's (Cumberland, ME/Greely) pass into the cage just 13 minutes in for her second game-winner. The hosts iced the victory with 4:56 left, as Dimick's pass across the goal mouth was converted by senior Rachel Sminkey (White River Junction, VT/Hartford). Wheaton outshot the Bears, 25-4 while holding an 11-3 edge in penalty corners. Senior keeper Mary Catherine Boll (Columbus, IN/Miss Porter's School) made two saves for her second shutout of the season and eighth of her career.

Dimick assisted junior Lyndsie Ryalls' (Branford, CT/Branford) game-tying tally with 3:08 remaining in the opening half against WPI before netting the game-winner with 4:39 to go in regulation. Sophomore Alisa Ardito (Branford, CT/Branford) notched the helper on Dimick's marker. The key for Wheaton, which won its conference opener for the first time since 1998, was going unscathed during a nine-on-11 situation that lasted for more than five minutes of the second half, as a pair of Lyons received yellow cards 15 seconds apart with less than 25 minutes left in the game. Boll made six stops.

Ryalls' goal elevated her alone into second in program history with 55 career points and into a tie for third with 21 goals. With a goal and three assists on the week, Dimick matched the program's single-season assists record of seven and became just the third Lyon with 25 points in a season.

Men's Soccer (5-3-1, 1-1) Gets Back on Track with 1-0-1 Week, Including NEWMAC Win

The Wheaton College men's soccer team went 1-0-1 last week, playing to a 2-2 double-overtime draw with visiting Brandeis University on Wednesday before snapping a four-game winless skid on Saturday behind a 2-0 NEWMAC victory at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). The winless streak was Wheaton's longest since the 1994 season.

In a back-and-forth contest with Brandeis, senior Cameron Habib (Norfolk, MA/Bridgton Academy) converted a restart from sophomore Dan Lane (Dedham, MA/Worcester Academy) in the 18th minute for a 1-0 Lyon lead before the Judges knotted the contest just three minutes later. Wheaton answered with the go-ahead tally in the 36th minute, as Habib and Lane assisted sophomore Justin Hart's (Ashland, MA/Ashland) goal, but the visitors tied the game in the 60th minute. Wheaton held a 17-13 edge in shots, while senior Matt Pachniuk (Newtown, CT/Newtown) finished with seven stops.

Against MIT, senior keeper David Croft (Cape Elizabeth, ME/Cape Elizabeth) made the most of his first start of the season, stopping three shots while notching his sixth career win and fourth shutout. Freshman Adam Sussman (Swampscott, MA/Swampscott) tallied off Habib's assist in the 57th minute for his first career goal, and junior back Dan Chong (Miami, FL/Coral Reef) buried his first goal of the season during the 70th minute. It was Chong's third career goal in 46 contests. The Lyons outshot MIT, 11-1 in the second half while holding a 13-4 advantage for the game.

Women's Soccer (8-1, 1-0) Extends Winning Streak to Five During 2-0 Week

The Wheaton College women's soccer team, ranked 15th nationally and second in New England by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), went 2-0 last week and has now won five straight, during which the Lyons have outscored opponents, 10-1. The Blue and White downed host Eastern Connecticut State University, 2-1 on Wednesday before defeating Smith College, 4-0 in its NEWMAC opener on Saturday at Mirrione Stadium. The Lyons extended their conference unbeaten streak to 65 games, the third-longest such league run in NCAA history regardless of division or gender.

Against Eastern Connecticut State, sophomore Angelamaria Viscomi (Newton, MA/Newton North) snapped a tie with the 80th-minute game-winner after junior Lauren Konopka (Medford, NJ/Holy Cross) wiped out the Warriors' lead with a 38th-minute marker off freshman Kerry Kiley's (Dedham, MA/Brimmer and May School) long pass down field. Junior Elana Cockburn (Chestnut Hill, MA/Brookline) made two first-half saves before freshman Abby Isaac (Larchmont, NY/Proctor Academy) stopped two shots during the second half to earn her first collegiate win in her second game.

Wheaton won its conference opener for the 10th straight year, as three different players scored against Smith. Freshman Lyndsey McManus (Marshfield, MA/Marshfield) notched the first two goals, junior Jenna Rabesa (Teaticket, MA/Falmouth) turned in a goal and an assist, and classmate Ashley Furr (Chicopee, MA/Cathedral) accounted for two assists. McManus tallied the game-winner 10:11 into the game before she and Rabesa scored 56 seconds apart with nearly 30 minutes left to clinch the win. Senior Bridget Furlong (Newburyport, MA/Newburyport) completed the scoring with her second goal of the season. Cockburn notched the win with one first-half save, while junior Stacey Kronenberg (Belchertown, MA/Belchertown) and Isaac combined for one stop in the second stanza.

Rabesa continued her ascension through Wheaton's record book, becoming just the seventh player in program history to be among the top 10 in each career points, goals and assists. Rabesa is ninth in points (65), 10th in goals (22) and tied for 10th in assists (21). Konopka, who's sixth in each points (88) and goals (34), has 20 assists and needs one more to join Wheaton's top 10.

Kronenberg Earns National, Regional and Conference Accolades

Kronenberg corralled a trio of honors for the week ending on Sunday, September 17, earning a spot on the 11-member D3Kicks.com Team of the Week, nabbing Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Defensive Player-of-the-Week honors and being named NEWMAC Player of the Week. Kronenberg, who also received a conference award during the 2004 season, helped Wheaton to a 3-0 record by blanking consecutive opponents to set the school's career mark for complete-game shutouts at 27. In a 1-0 win over 2005 NCAA Tournament participant Worcester State College on September 14, she made three saves before turning aside six shots at University of Maine at Farmington on September 16 in a 2-0 win. Kronenberg notched 13 shutouts as a freshman and 12 as a sophomore before moving past Emily Boeing '02 for the Wheaton record this fall.

The Wheaton College men's tennis team sent four players to the 14th annual Middlebury College Invitational, as the Lyons took part in singles and doubles competitions during the event. Dressler turned back a Colby College competitor in three sets before losing to a Bowdoin College opponent 6-2, 6-4.

Women's Tennis (6-1, 2-1) Has Win Streak Snapped Before Sending Four to ITAs

The Wheaton College women's tennis team saw its eight-match winning streak snapped at the hands of NEWMAC foe and nationally-ranked Wellesley College, 8-1 on Tuesday before sending four players to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Regional Tournament at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) over the weekend.

Against Wellesley, which is ranked 23rd by the ITA, the Lyons saw their longest winning streak since 1999 come to an end. Senior Jamie Weiss (Chicago, IL/Francis W. Parker School) picked up the Blue and White's lone victory, triumphing 7-5, 7-6 at second singles. In doubles play, the Lyons nearly registered a point at number three, as sophomores Mallory Farmer (Washington, CT/The Gunnery) and Oriana Federico (Andover, MA/Lawrence Academy) dropped a narrow 9-8 final.

At the ITA Regional Tournament, Weiss was the most successful among the four Wheaton athletes. In singles play, she notched a 3-6, 6-2, 10-8 win over a Clark University foe before falling in the next round. During doubles play, Weiss and freshman Katherine Knies (Purdys, NY/North Salem) took a Tufts University tandem to a tiebreaker before bowing, 9-7.

Women's Volleyball (2-10, 1-2) Splits Pair of Home Matches During 1-1 Week

The Wheaton College women's volleyball team split a pair of home matches during a 1-1 week, dropping a heartbreaking 3-1 (22-30, 20-30, 30-21, 29-31) decision to NEWMAC foe Clark University on Tuesday before picking up its first home win under first-year head coach Ben Read, a 3-1 (30-21, 29-31, 30-25, 30-17) final over Roger Williams University on Thursday.

Against Clark, Wheaton nearly rallied from a 2-0 deficit to force a fifth set.
