Baseball (16-6, 5-2) Wins Four of Five, Posts 2-1 Record in NEWMAC Play

The Wheaton College baseball team, ranked first in New England and 10th nationally by the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA), won four of five games last week, each at home. The Lyons kicked off the week with a 10-4 win over Suffolk University, the seventh-ranked team in the regional poll, before losing to Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), 4-3 in 11 innings on Thursday during New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play. Wheaton knocked off Roger Williams University, 4-1 on Friday before sweeping a league doubleheader from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), 17-0 and 15-3 on Saturday. The Lyons are tied for first in the conference.

Senior Joe White (Bedford, NH/Manchester West) yielded one earned run over seven innings while striking out five against Suffolk. Junior Scott Guillerault (South Portland, ME/South Portland) went 3-for-4 with four RBI and a double, while senior Brandon Leonard (Brockton, MA/Brockton), junior Jake Yagjian (Brewster, MA/Nauset Regional), sophomore Nick Pecora (Highland Park, NJ/Immaculata) and freshman Jeff Lieneck (Foxboro, MA/Xaverian Brothers) had two hits apiece. Junior Keith Pescosolido (Newton, MA/Newton North) and sophomore Jared Barnes (North Attleboro, MA/Bishop Feehan) each fired an inning of shutout relief.

Against WPI, the Lyons saw their 20-game home winning streak snapped when the Engineers scored once in the 11th inning. Pecora and sophomore Robert Foote (Walpole, MA/Walpole) each had two hits, while Leonard drove in a pair of runs. Barnes, Pescosolido, and sophomores Brian Hughes (Dudley, MA/Shepherd Hill Regional) and Josh Simmons (Cranston, RI/Cranston West) combined to yield only one unearned run in six innings of relief.

Wheaton got back on track versus Roger Williams, as junior Chris McDonough (Weymouth, MA/Weymouth) allowed one unearned run on two hits while striking out 10 in eight innings. Simmons worked a three-strikeout ninth inning for the save. Senior Jeff Martin (Marblehead, MA/Marblehead) went 2-for-3 and drove in three of the Lyons' four runs.

In game one against MIT, junior Louie Bernardini (Gray, ME/Gray-New Gloucester) took a no-hitter into the seventh. Sophomore Karl Olson (Bethel, ME/Gould Academy) went 2-for-3 with five RBI, two runs and two doubles, while Martin and senior Adam Laplante (Harwich, MA/Harwich) added three hits each. Guillerault had two hits and two RBI, while Foote and senior Travis Anthoine (Portland, ME/Portland) also rapped two base knocks apiece.

The Lyons banged out 22 hits in the nightcap, as Foote and Leonard each had four. Leonard also scored three times and drove in two runs, while Anthoine was 3-for-4 with three runs. Guillerault, Pecora and junior Pat Moore (Brookline, MA/Brookline) had two hits each, while Yagjian added two sacrifice flies. Junior Josh Moore (Manchester, NH/Manchester Memorial) struck out seven in the win.

A number of Lyons continue to climb the program's career charts. Guillerault is second in home runs (21), third in RBI (122) and ninth in doubles (34), while Leonard is third in stolen bases (43), seventh in each hits (176) and runs (123), and 10th in RBI (92). Josh Moore is tied for fourth in wins (15), while McDonough is sixth in strikeouts (150) and sits just 29 shy of the school standard.

Anthoine Named NEWMAC Player-of-the-Week for the First Time

Anthoine was named NEWMAC Player of the Week for the first time, drawing the honor for the week ending on Sunday, April 1. He batted .478, going 11-for-23 while leading the Lyons to a 6-0 mark. Anthoine also slugged .565 with a .520 on-base percentage and no strikeouts in 28 plate appearances, and he scored five times, drove in three runs and stole three bases. Anthoine went 4-for-7 with three runs in a doubleheader sweep of Springfield College, was 3-for-4 against Brandeis University, and had two hits with two steals at Endicott College.

Men's Lacrosse (2-6, 2-0) Goes 1-1, Remains Tied for First in Pilgrim League Standings

The Wheaton College men's lacrosse team went 1-1 at home last week, first dropping an 8-3 decision to Keene State College on Tuesday before knocking off Norwich University, 14-4 on Saturday to remain tied for first place in the Pilgrim League.

In a rematch of last year's Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Tournament final, the Lyons held Keene State scoreless for a 30:02 span but could not catch up. Freshman Tim Horan (Cheshire, CT/Cheshire) tallied a goal and an assist versus a team receiving votes in the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) national poll. Freshman starter Schuyler Horn (New Hartford, CT/Kingswood-Oxford School) and junior reserve Jeremy Beech (West Newbury, MA/Governor Dummer Academy) each made five saves in one half of work.

Against Norwich, senior Trey Helms (Cockeysville, MD/Saint Paul's School) poured in a career-high five goals. Helms also added an assist, while freshman Sky Sabin's (Katonah, NY/The Harvey School) two goals were the first of his career. Sophomore F.J. Buckley (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury) and freshman Warren Garceau (Guilford, CT/Canterbury School) also each found the back of the net for the first times in their respective college careers, and freshman Drew Schaffer (New Haven, CT/Loomis Chaffee School) had two goals and an assist. Junior Richie Rasamny (Redding, CT/Joel Barlow) tacked on a goal and four helpers, while Horan provided four assists. Freshman Alex Lewis (Westfield, NJ/Westfield) made seven saves in his collegiate debut.

Women's Lacrosse (3-6, 2-1) Wins Two of Three, Splits a Pair in NEWMAC Play

The Wheaton College women's lacrosse team won two of three games last week, including splitting a pair in NEWMAC play. The Lyons dropped a 21-6 decision at nationally-ranked Babson College on Tuesday before downing Bridgewater State College, 11-10 in overtime during non-conference action on Thursday. Junior Meredith Hurd (Bath, ME/Hyde School) notched her 100th career goal against the Bears before Wheaton picked up a 15-8 win on Saturday at Mount Holyoke College.

At Babson, which is ranked 13th nationally by Inside Lacrosse, the Lyons fell into an 8-1 hole and never caught up. Hurd and freshman Brittany King (Georgetown, MA/Proctor Academy) recorded two goals apiece, while sophomore Caitlin Grant (Walpole, MA/Walpole) contributed a goal and an assist. Senior Kristin Konig (Montecito, CA/Cate School) made six stops.

Hurd rallied the homestanding Lyons past Bridgewater State, tallying with 47.7 and 24.4 seconds left in regulation to tie the game before netting the overtime winner with 50.5 ticks left in the non-sudden-death extra period. Hurd scored seven goals, four others tallied one apiece, and sophomore Bridget Thornton (Southington, CT/Cheshire Academy) had two assists. Konig stopped nine shots.

Hurd added five more goals and an assist at Mount Holyoke. King provided three goals and a helper, while sophomore Abbie Sherwin (Rye, NH/Portsmouth) recorded a hat trick. Freshman Hanna Landis (Cape Elizabeth, ME/Cape Elizabeth) had a goal and an assist, and Konig made 12 saves.

Softball (15-11, 7-3) Wins Four of Six to Slide into Second-Place Tie in NEWMAC

The Wheaton College softball team moved to 9-3 in its last dozen games after winning four of six contests last week, all against NEWMAC foes at home. The Lyons twice knocked off Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), 10-1 and 9-0 in five-inning affairs on Tuesday before splitting with two-time defending NEWMAC Tournament champion Babson College on Friday, winning by a 13-1 score in five innings during game one before falling, 4-2 in the nightcap. Wheaton then split a twinbill with league leader Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) on Saturday, dropping a 5-2 decision in game one before rebounding for a 12-7 victory. The Blue and White is tied for second in the league standings.

In game one against MIT, the Lyons broke open a close contest with a seven-run fourth inning. Junior Alix Brozman (Chappaqua, NY/Horace Greeley) went 3-for-3 with three runs and three steals, while senior Jessica DePolito (Taunton, MA/Coyle and Cassidy) was 2-for-3 with three RBI and two doubles. Junior Jodi Moynagh (Worcester, MA/Holy Name Central Catholic) struck out eight batters.

Wheaton had 14 hits and nine steals in the second game, as DePolito was 3-for-3 with three RBI, two runs and a home run, while junior Audrey Poulton (Charlestown, RI/Chariho Regional) went 3-for-3. Brozman had two hits and two steals, sophomore Stacey Kelleher (Brockton, MA/Brockton) was 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI, junior Meredith Gorton (Warwick, NY/Warwick Valley) had two hits, and sophomore Brady Benton (Concord, NH/Concord) stole two bases. Freshman Andrea Bagley (Foxboro, MA/Foxboro) spun a four-hit shutout with six strikeouts.

Against Babson, the Lyons took game one for their fifth consecutive victory via the eight-run mercy rule, as senior Nicole Lachance (Rochester, NH/Spaulding) went 2-for-4 with four RBI, two runs, a home run and a double. Benton was 2-for-2 with two RBI and a double, while Brozman, Kelleher and Poulton each had two hits. Moynagh allowed six hits in five innings. In the nightcap, the Beavers scored twice in the seventh to nullify a pair of one-run Wheaton rallies. Kelleher and freshman Merry MacDonald (Braintree, MA/Braintree) drove in runs.

WPI plated four runs in the first inning of game one and never looked back during its opener with the Lyons. Kelleher went 2-for-3 with a double, while Benton had Wheaton's lone RBI. The Blue and White's bats came back to life in game two, as DePolito went 2-for-4 with five RBI and a home run. Lachance also went deep, and Poulton was 4-for-4 with a double. Moynagh batted 2-for-4 with two RBI and a double, while MacDonald, junior Erika Marini (Pawtucket, RI/Saint Raphael Academy) and sophomore Lynn Cotto (Brookfield, CT/Brookfield) each had two hits. Poulton notched the win in the circle, and Poulton tossed 2.1 scoreless innings of relief.

DePolito's torrid bat in the recent weeks has shot her up Wheaton's career charts, as she is now fifth in program history in home runs (17), eighth in RBI (93) and tied for ninth in doubles (28). Lachance is eighth in roundtrippers (10). In the circle, Moynagh is third in strikeouts (288) and fifth in wins (31), while Poulton is fifth in strikeouts (162) and eighth in wins (21).

DePolito Earns ECAC and NEWMAC Player-of-the-Week Accolades

DePolito was named player of the week by both the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) and NEWMAC for the week ending on Sunday, April 1. It was DePolito's second career NEWMAC honor, as she also drew the accolade on April 4, 2005, but the first outright award of her career from either organization. She hit .519 by going 14-for-27 with 10 runs, 10 RBI, four home runs and three doubles, homering in four straight games and racking up five multiple-hit contests. During a doubleheader sweep of Smith College on March 30, DePolito was 3-for-8 with three RBI and a homer before going 4-for-7 with four RBI and two dingers in a split with Springfield College the next day. DePolito added a 2-for-3 effort in game one of a twinbill with 24th-ranked Rhode Island College on March 27 before going 3-for-3 with three runs, three RBI, a double and a homer in the first game of two against Bridgewater State College on April 1. She later went 2-for-3 with two runs in the nightcap.

Men's Tennis (7-2, 2-0) Wins Two By 9-0 Finals, Runs Winning Streak to Four Matches

The Wheaton College men's tennis team won both of its matches by 9-0 finals last week, first downing visiting Roger Williams University on Wednesday before picking up a NEWMAC triumph at the United States Coast Guard Academy on Saturday. The Lyons finished the week riding a four-match winning streak, recording 9-0 scores in its three most recent outings, and are tied for first in the league.

Six Lyons won singles in straight sets against Roger Williams. Seniors Brian Danishevsky (Hamden, CT/Hamden Hall Country Day School), Brad Dressler (Cranston, RI/Cranston West), Payum Payman (Pleasant Valley, NY/Arlington), Raymour Radhakrishnan (Amherst, NH/Bridgton Academy) and Will Stoddard (Huntington, VT/Mount Mansfield Union) were joined in that group by freshman Kyle Hudgins (Uxbridge, MA/Uxbridge). Dressler and Payman won their first doubles match, Danishevsky and Radhakrishnan blanked their number-two opponent, and Stoddard sided with freshman James Little (Mount Desert, ME/Mount Desert Island) for a victory at three.

Wheaton picked up six more straight-set wins in singles against Coast Guard, as Danishevsky, Dressler, Hudgins, Payman, Radhakrishnan and Stoddard each triumphed. In doubles play, Danishevsky and Dressler won in the first spot, Radhakrishnan and Stoddard were victorious at two, and Hudgins and Little notched a win in the third position.

Danishevsky and Radhakrishnan Draw NEWMAC Doubles Team-of-the-Week Honors

Danishevsky and Radhakrishnan were named NEWMAC Doubles Team of the Week for the week ending on Sunday, April 1. The senior duo became the second Blue and White tandem to draw NEWMAC honors this season. Danishevsky was also half of a doubles team that earned a league citation on March 20, 2006, while Radhakrishnan received his initial career accolade. Danishevsky and Radhakrishnan notched an 8-3 victory in the second position during Wheaton's 9-0 win at Clark University on March 31, as the triumph marked the tandem's second of the spring.

Women's Tennis (11-5) Finishes Academic Year with Fourth Straight Win

The Wheaton College women's tennis team completed its 2006-07 schedule with a 9-0 victory over visiting Johnson & Wales University on Friday, as the Lyons won their fourth straight match to finish with their highest win total since the 2003-04 season.

Seniors Darby McDermott (Briarcliff Manor, NY/Hackley School) and Jamie Weiss (Chicago, IL/Francis W. Parker School) capped their four-year careers with two victories apiece, including each winning their singles matches in straight sets. Weiss and freshman Katherine Knies (Purdys, NY/North Salem) sided for a first doubles win, while McDermott and sophomore Mallory Farmer (Washington, CT/The Gunnery) triumphed at number two. Senior Sara White (Pittsfield, MA/Pittsfield) and sophomore Oriana Federico (Andover, MA/Lawrence Academy) collected a victory in the third doubles spot. Farmer, Federico, Knies and freshman Alexandra Magee (Abington, PA/Saint Stephen's Episcopal School) also each won in straight sets during singles.

Men's and Women's Track and Field Returns to Action with 10 Wins at Bryant

The Wheaton College men's and women's outdoor track and field teams returned from a three-week layoff to corral 10 victories on Saturday at Bryant University's non-scoring Bulldog Invitational.

Senior All-American Jennifer Harlow (East Bridgewater, MA/East Bridgewater) provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championship in the high jump with a height of 5' 5 3/4", and she also captured the 100-meter hurdles race. Junior Joell Whitley (Magnolia, NJ/Triton Regional) won the long and triple jump competitions, while the Lyons' 4x400M relay quartet was victorious, as sophomores Lily Calderwood (Harvard, MA/Bromfield School), Celeste Karpow (Wilton, CT/Wilton) and Christine Moreau (Lincoln, RI/Lincoln) joined freshman Katie Pratt (Litchfield, CT/Litchfield). Calderwood also won the 1,500M. Lyons took the top three spots in the 400M hurdles, as sophomore Chizoba Ezeigwe (Brockton, MA/Thayer Academy) won, Karpow was second and Moreau placed third. Sophomores Amanda Rawson (Dudley, MA/Shepherd Hill Regional) and Lauren Reddy (Walnut Creek, CA/Carondelet) went one-two in the 3,000M. Senior Katelyn Gannon (Shrewsbury, MA/Shrewsbury) tied for the top height in the pole vault while finishing second. On the men's side, freshman Merzudin Ibric (Revere, MA/Phillips Academy) won the 400M, and classmate Howard Powell (Brooklyn, NY/Boys and Girls) took first during the 110M hurdles.
