Weekly LyonBaseball (12-5, 3-1) Extends Winning Streak to Seven Games Behind 6-0 WeekThe Wheaton College baseball team, which is ranked 10th nationally by the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA), extended its winning streak to seven games thanks to a 6-0 week. The Lyons downed visiting Brandeis University, 2-1 on Tuesday before notching a 12-2 victory at the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth on Thursday. Wheaton defeated host Endicott College, 6-1 on Friday before sweeping visiting Springfield College, 2-1 and 11-5 in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader on Saturday. The Lyons capped their undefeated week with a 2-1 victory over the visiting University of Southern Maine, which is ranked 15th by the ABCA. Senior Brandon Leonard's (Brockton, MA/Brockton) bunt single with one down in the bottom of the ninth plated the winning run against Brandeis. Senior Travis Anthoine (Portland, ME/Portland) went 3-for-4, while sophomore Nick Pecora (Highland Park, NJ/Immaculata) was 2-for-4. Junior Josh Moore (Manchester, NH/Manchester Memorial) struck out six and walked two while allowing just one earned run on six hits in eight innings, and classmate Keith Pescosolido (Newton, MA/Newton North) picked up the win in relief after working a 1-2-3 ninth that included two strikeouts. Wheaton blew open a close game at UMass-Dartmouth with nine ninth-inning runs. Pecora went 4-for-5 with three RBI and two runs, senior Adam Laplante (Harwich, MA/Harwich) was 3-for-5 with three runs, a double and a homer, and junior Scott Guillerault (South Portland, ME/South Portland) belted a three-run homer in the ninth to move into sole possession of second in program history with 21. Senior Joe White (Bedford, NH/Manchester West) fanned a career-high-tying 10 during seven innings of five-hit ball, and the pitching staff set a program record for a nine-inning game with 15 strikeouts. Sophomore Adam Gingras (Woonsocket, RI/Woonsocket) carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning and ended up yielding only two hits during eight scoreless innings at Endicott. Leonard tripled twice, while Anthoine, Laplante, junior Jake Yagjian (Brewster, MA/Nauset Regional) and sophomore Robert Foote (Walpole, MA/Walpole) also each had two hits. Anthoine swiped a pair of bases. Wheaton opened its doubleheader against Springfield by receiving a stellar effort from junior Chris McDonough (Weymouth, MA/Weymouth), who allowed an unearned run while striking out 10 during a seven-inning victory. Pecora doubled home the tying run in the fifth, and Laplante's two-out single in the sixth put the Lyons on top for good. Anthoine went 4-for-4 with three runs in the nightcap with the Pride, while Yagjian added two hits and two RBI. Guillerault also scored twice and drove in two, while Laplante scored three times. Eight different Lyons had an RBI, and junior Louie Bernardini (Gray, ME/Gray-New Gloucester) notched the win after giving up two earned runs in seven innings. The Lyons, who are ranked first in New England by the ABCA, downed Southern Maine, the region's second-ranked team, behind another strong effort from Moore. The hurler yielded one earned run on three hits in 7.2 innings while fanning nine. Sophomore Josh Simmons (Cranston, RI/Cranston West) struck out three during 1.1 frames as he notched the save. Anthoine tripled leading off the game and scored on a Leonard sacrifice fly, while freshman Jeff Lieneck's (Foxboro, MA/Xaverian Brothers) sacrifice fly in the second plated the eventual winning run. Foote Corrals First Career NEWMAC Baseball HonorFoote garnered his first career NEWMAC Player-of-the-Week honor for the week ending on Sunday, March 25. Foote went 3-for-6 with two runs scored, a double and sacrifice bunt during a split on March 24 at the United States Coast Guard Academy, going a perfect 3-for-3 in game two while keying the Lyons' multiple-run innings in the second and sixth with a single and sacrifice, respectively. Men's Lacrosse (1-5, 1-0) Notches First Win in Pilgrim League OpenerThe Wheaton College men's lacrosse team split a pair of games last week, dropping a 15-4 decision at Trinity College on Wednesday before downing host Clark University, 9-5 on Saturday in the Lyons' first Pilgrim League contest. It was Wheaton's initial conference-opening win since 2004. Against Trinity, the Lyons trailed just 2-1 five minutes into the second quarter before the Bantams pulled away. Freshman Tim Horan (Cheshire, CT/Cheshire) finished with a goal and two assists, while senior Markus Ricci (Wayland, MA/Wayland) had a goal and a helper. Freshman starter Schuyler Horn (New Hartford, CT/Kingswood-Oxford School) made six stops before junior Jeremy Beech (West Newbury, MA/Governor Dummer Academy) recorded six saves in relief. Ricci's four-goal performance versus Clark led Wheaton to its first win of the year, snapping the Lyons' six-game losing streak. After seeing the Cougars knot the game early in the second half, the Blue and White tallied six of the final eight goals. Junior Richie Rasamny (Redding, CT/Joel Barlow) finished with a goal and two assists, while senior Andrew Rohan (South Hadley, MA/Avon Old Farms) and freshman Drew Schaffer (New Haven, CT/Loomis Chaffee School) added a tally and helper apiece. Beech made four saves in relief to draw the victory between the pipes. Women's Lacrosse (1-5, 1-0) Splits a Pair, Downs NEWMAC Foe Springfield in OvertimeThe Wheaton College women's lacrosse team went 1-1 last week, dropping an 18-7 decision at nationally-ranked Bowdoin College on Tuesday before rebounding with a 10-9 overtime victory on Saturday against visiting Springfield College, the team the Lyons have met in the last five NEWMAC Tournament championship games. The win snapped Wheaton's six-game losing streak, as junior Meredith Hurd (Bath, ME/Hyde School) recorded her 100th career point during the game. The Blue and White scored only once in the first 24 and a half minutes to fall behind Bowdoin, which was ranked sixth in the latest Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) national poll. Sophomore Bridget Thornton (Southington, CT/Cheshire Academy) paced the Lyons with a hat trick, while classmate Caitlin Grant (Walpole, MA/Walpole) added a pair of goals. Senior Kristin Konig (Montecito, CA/Cate School) recorded 18 saves. Sophomore Madeline Williams' (Annapolis, MD/Key School) overtime goal sent Wheaton past Springfield in a battle of perennial NEWMAC heavyweights. The Pride took the past two league tournament championship games from the Lyons, but the hosts twice rallied from a three-goal deficit, and Grant's tally with 1:34 to go in regulation tied the contest and sent the teams to the extra session. Williams then netted the lone goal of the non-sudden-death overtime with 3:05 remaining, and Konig made a big save with a minute left to preserve the lead. Hurd scored four times, while junior Alexa Jurczak (Davidsonville, MD/Miss Porter's School) netted a pair. Konig made 11 saves. Softball (11-9, 3-1) Wins Five of Eight Overall, Begins NEWMAC Play 3-1The Wheaton College softball team went 5-3 last week, starting play on Tuesday with a pair of losses at nationally-ranked Rhode Island College, 3-1 and 2-1. The Lyons rebounded with two wins on Friday at NEWMAC foe Smith College, 14-0 in five innings and 7-0. On Saturday, Wheaton split with visiting Springfield College in a conference double dip, losing 9-4 in the opener before winning 6-5 in dramatic fashion during the nightcap. The Lyons then notched two five-inning wins over visiting Bridgewater State College, 8-0 and 12-0 on Sunday, as junior Jodi Moynagh (Worcester, MA/Holy Name Central Catholic) fired the fifth perfect game in program history during the nightcap. Against Rhode Island College, which is ranked 24th by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA), Wheaton totaled two runs in two games versus the Anchorwomen. Senior Jessica DePolito (Taunton, MA/Coyle and Cassidy) went 2-for-3 with a double and a run in the opener, tying the game in the second inning before the hosts tallied the final two runs. In the second contest, senior Nicole Lachance (Rochester, NH/Spaulding) drilled an RBI triple to put Wheaton up in the third inning, but Rhode Island College won on a walk-off hit in the seventh. Lachance finished 2-for-3. Moynagh and junior Audrey Poulton (Charlestown, RI/Chariho Regional) each spun shutouts during big wins over Smith. Lachance went 4-for-4 with four RBI, three runs and a double in the opener, while sophomore Brady Benton (Concord, NH/Concord) was 3-for-4 with three RBI and a home run. Junior Erika Marini (Pawtucket, RI/Saint Raphael Academy) went 2-for-3 with three runs, and DePolito had two hits and two runs. Poulton yielded only four hits in five innings. Moynagh fanned seven and allowed three hits. Springfield downed the Lyons in the first contest of a twinbill. DePolito blasted a home run, Kelleher launched the first of her career, and Marini's two-run shot in the fifth brought Wheaton within 6-4. Benton went 2-for-3, while Poulton allowed zero earned runs in 2.2 innings of relief. Poulton was the story in game two, as she pitched two perfect innings of relief before stroking a two-strike, two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the seventh to give Wheaton and herself the win. DePolito finished 3-for-4 with three RBI, two runs, a home run and a double, while Poulton and junior Alix Brozman (Chappaqua, NY/Horace Greeley) each had two hits. Against Bridgewater State, DePolito keyed a Lyon win in game one, going 3-for-3 with three runs, three RBI, a home run and a double. It marked the fourth straight game in which DePolito homered and moved her into a tie for fifth in program history with 15 career long balls. Benton also launched a two-run home run, Marini doubled in a pair, and Brozman scored twice. Freshman Andrea Bagley (Foxboro, MA/Foxboro) allowed only two hits during her five-inning complete game. Moynagh and the Wheaton offense clicked in the second contest, as Moynagh set down all 15 Bear batters during a five-inning perfect game, the Lyons' first since Kim Sears '00 on April 27, 1999. She struck out six, including getting the final batter looking, and stroked a double to back her own cause. Sophomore Lynn Cotto (Brookfield, CT/Brookfield) caught all five innings and contributed an RBI single. MacDonald slugged a grand slam during a seven-run third, Marini was 2-for-3 with three RBI, while DePolito and Poulton each had two hits and two runs. The Blue and White's pair of senior doubles tandems each picked up victories. Brad Dressler (Cranston, RI/Cranston West) and Payum Payman (Pleasant Valley, NY/Arlington) won in the top spot, while Brian Danishevsky (Hamden, CT/Hamden Hall Country Day School) and Raymour Radhakrishnan (Amherst, NH/Bridgton Academy) triumphed in the second position. At third doubles, freshmen Kyle Hudgins (Uxbridge, MA/Uxbridge) and James Little (Mount Desert, ME/Mount Desert Island) earned their first victory as a tandem. In singles play, Dressler pitched a shutout in the third slot, while Payman and Little yielded a lone point in the first and sixth positions, respectively. Hudgins allowed two points at five, while Danishevsky won at two and Radhakrishnan at four. Dressler Draws NEWMAC Accolade for Third Straight WeekDressler was named NEWMAC Player of the Week for the week ending on Sunday, March 25. It marked the third straight week in which Dressler was honored by the NEWMAC, as he was half of the league's top doubles tandem in each of the previous two weeks. Dressler picked up a pair of third singles wins over players from regionally-ranked teams during Wheaton's 1-1 week. On March 20, he downed a player from 14th-ranked Brandeis University during a 7-2 Wheaton loss. On March 25, Dressler corralled a win versus 11th-ranked Skidmore College to push the Lyons past the Thoroughbreds, 5-4. Women's Tennis (10-5) Has Two Players Win Singles Crowns at Wheaton InvitationalThe Wheaton College women's tennis team had a number of athletes turn in successful showings on Sunday at its own invitational, as senior Darby McDermott (Briarcliff Manor, NY/Hackley School) and freshman Katherine Knies (Purdys, NY/North Salem) each won singles flights titles while sophomores Mallory Farmer (Washington, CT/The Gunnery) and Oriana Federico (Andover, MA/Lawrence Academy) reached the first doubles final.
