Weekly LyonSynchronized Swimming Extends Top-10 Streak at Collegiate Championship to 19 YearsThe Wheaton College synchronized swimming team finished eighth of 22 teams as host of the United States Collegiate Synchronized Swimming Championship on Saturday, as the Lyons hosted the three-day event for the third time. Wheaton ran its top-10 finish streak to 19 seasons dating back to 1989. Sisters Jenna and Sarah Swinkin (Hamden, CT/Hamden) highlighted the C figures competition, as freshman Jenna fell 0.006 points shy of first place at 66.405. Senior Sarah placed third with 65.570 points. Junior Megan Kinney (Los Angeles, CA/Marlborough School) took 13th in B figures, while senior Renata Paglio (Portland, ME/Deering) was 18th in D. Wheaton's team routine came in eighth, as Kinney and the Swinkins joined senior Elizabeth Corman (Saint Paul, MN/Hill-Murray School), sophomores Sharada Strasmore (Weston, CT/Weston) and Sylvia Syracuse (Tonawanda, NY/Kenmore West), and freshman Laura Montes (San Juan, PR/Academia San Jose). Corman, Montes and Strasmore combined for a 12th-place showing in trio, and Montes also placed 12th in the solo routine. Baseball (6-5, 1-1) Sees 13-Game Conference Win Streak Snapped in Doubleheader SplitThe Wheaton College baseball team, which is ranked second nationally by the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA), split a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader at the United States Coast Guard Academy on Saturday, as the Lyons' 13-game league winning streak ended. Wheaton dropped the opener, 2-1 before picking up a 7-2 win. Junior Chris McDonough (Weymouth, MA/Weymouth) was the hard-luck loser in game one after yielding just four hits in six innings while striking out five. Senior Travis Anthoine (Portland, ME/Portland) plated the Lyons' lone run in the second on a sacrifice, but the Bears countered with single runs in the fourth and fifth. Junior Jake Yagjian (Brewster, MA/Nauset Regional) went 2-for-3. Sophomore Robert Foote (Walpole, MA/Walpole) went 3-for-3 with a double and two runs in the second contest, and junior Louie Bernardini (Gray, ME/Gray-New Gloucester) did not allow an earned run in 7.2 innings while striking out four and giving up only three singles. Sophomore Nick Pecora's (Highland Park, NJ/Immaculata) bases-loaded walk keyed a two-run second, while his sacrifice fly aided a three-run sixth that put Wheaton up 5-0. With three stolen bases, senior Brandon Leonard (Brockton, MA/Brockton) became just the third Lyon to record 50 career steals. Leonard Draws First ECAC and NEWMAC Honors of CareerLeonard earned the first Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) and NEWMAC player-of-the-week honors of his career, drawing the awards for the week ending on Sunday, March 18. Leonard shared the ECAC accolade. Leonard had a .438 average with 11 runs, six RBI and five stolen bases as the Lyons went 5-3 in Phoenix, Arizona. He had three multiple-hit games, including going 4-for-4 with three runs, two RBI, a homer and double in a 10-6 win over Johns Hopkins University on March 12. In two wins versus fourth-ranked The College of New Jersey, Leonard went 5-for-10 with four RBI and four runs, which included the game-winning RBI on a squeeze play in an 8-7 win in 11 innings on March 18. Men's Lacrosse (0-4) Drops Pair, Including Close Loss to Eastern Connecticut StateThe Wheaton College men's lacrosse team went 0-2 last week, falling by a 14-4 count at three-time Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) champion Endicott College on Thursday and 13-9 against Eastern Connecticut State University on Saturday at Mansfield High School. In the teams' first contest since 1999, Endicott tallied 11 of the game's 12 first-half goals. Freshman Conor Whitney (West Hartford, CT/Kingswood-Oxford School) scored his first collegiate marker to bring Wheaton within 2-1 before the Gulls took command. Seniors Trey Helms (Cockeysville, MD/Saint Paul's School) and Andrew Rohan (South Hadley, MA/Avon Old Farms) each had a goal and an assist, while junior Jeremy Beech (West Newbury, MA/Governor Dummer Academy) and freshman Schuyler Horn (New Hartford, CT/Kingswood-Oxford School) combined for 12 saves. Against Eastern Connecticut State, the Lyons saw a 5-3 halftime lead slip away. The teams met for the first time since 2001, and the Warriors scored the first eight goals of the second half to come from behind and pull away. Senior Markus Ricci (Wayland, MA/Wayland) notched three goals for his third career hat trick, while junior Richie Rasamny (Redding, CT/Joel Barlow) added two goals and an assist. Freshman Tim Horan (Cheshire, CT/Cheshire) scored twice, classmate Drew Schaffer (New Haven, CT/Loomis Chaffee School) had a goal and three assists, and Beech made 12 saves. Women's Lacrosse (0-4) Falls to Nationally-Ranked Tufts in Lone Contest of the WeekThe Wheaton College women's lacrosse team dropped its only contest last week at nationally-ranked Tufts University, 15-7. The Jumbos are 18th in the latest Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) poll. Wheaton scored first and trailed just 5-3 at halftime before yielding 10 of the second half's 14 goals to the Jumbos. Junior Meredith Hurd (Bath, ME/Hyde School) tallied two goals and an assist and now needs one point for 100 in her career. Sophomore Caitlin Grant (Walpole, ME/Walpole) also scored twice, while senior Kristin Konig (Montecito, CA/Cate School) stopped 19 shots, including 11 during a strong first-half effort. Bagley and Poulton Earn ECAC and NEWMAC Weekly Softball AccoladesWheaton College softball junior Audrey Poulton (Charlestown, RI/Chariho Regional) and freshman Andrea Bagley (Foxboro, MA/Foxboro) each earned weekly honors from the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) and NEWMAC for the week ending on Sunday, March 18. Bagley was named pitcher of the week by both organizations, while Poulton drew player-of-the-week accolades from each after earning the NEWMAC pitching nod once last year. Poulton keyed a 4-2 week for Wheaton by batting .556 (10-18) with team highs of five RBI and a .722 slugging percentage. Among her accomplishments were launching a game-tying homer in one game and beating out an RBI bunt single that gave the Lyons the lead for good over nationally-ranked Transylvania University. Bagley went 2-0 with a 0.69 ERA and .095 opponent batting average. She spun a two-hit shutout against The College of Wooster, retiring 12 of the final 13 batters, before setting down 14 of the final 15 versus North Park University after yielding hits to only the first two batters. Men's Tennis (4-2) Splits Pair Against Regionally-Ranked Foes, Downs SkidmoreThe Wheaton College men's tennis team went 1-1 against a pair of teams ranked in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Northeast region poll, falling against visiting Brandeis University, 7-2 on Tuesday before downing host Skidmore College, 5-4 on Sunday. The Judges are ranked 14th, while the Thoroughbreds are 11th. Against Brandeis, the Lyons lost all three doubles matches, though seniors Brad Dressler (Cranston, RI/Cranston West) and Payum Payman (Pleasant Valley, NY/Arlington) held close with the ninth-ranked tandem in the region before falling, 9-8 in the top spot. Dressler won his third singles match, taking a 7-6, 3-6, 10-7 decision, while freshman Kyle Hudgins (Uxbridge, MA/Uxbridge) tallied Wheaton's other point by also gutting out a three-set match, winning 3-6, 6-4, 10-7 at number six. The Lyons squeezed by Skidmore thanks to a quartet of three-set singles victories. Dressler and Payman picked up Wheaton's lone doubles point with an 8-6 win at the first position. In singles play, Payman, senior Brian Danishevsky (Hamden, CT/Hamden Hall Country Day School), Dressler and senior Will Stoddard (Huntington, VT/Mount Mansfield Union) were victorious in the first through fourth positions, respectively. Dressler and Payman Earn NEWMAC Honors for Second Straight WeekDressler and Payman notched NEWMAC Doubles Team-of-the-Week honors for the second consecutive week, while Payman earned a singles player-of-the-week nod for the week ending on Sunday, March 18. Payman went 2-1 out of the top singles spot during Wheaton's 2-1 week, as he recorded his 100th career victory between singles and doubles play on March 13 with a win against Hobart College. Payman also downed his Tiffin University opponent on March 14. Dressler and Payman posted a 2-1 doubles record, knocking off each their Hobart and Tiffin opponents. Harlow Draws First ECAC Track Honor of the Spring, Fourth of Academic YearWheaton College women's outdoor track and field senior Jennifer Harlow (East Bridgewater, MA/East Bridgewater) was named Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Field Athlete of the Week for the week ending on Sunday, March 18. It was the fourth ECAC accolade bestowed upon Harlow this academic year. A week after defending her national high jump crown at the indoor NCAA Championship, Harlow opened the outdoor campaign by provisionally qualifying for the NCAA meet with a jump of 5' 5 3/4" at the Carolina Classic in San Juan, Puerto Rico, on March 17.
