Field Hockey (3-5, 0-1) Blanks Local Rival Before Falling to Ninth-Ranked Springfield

The Wheaton College field hockey team blanked local foe Bridgewater State College, 2-0 on Tuesday before narrowly slipping to nationally-ranked Springfield College by a 1-0 final in the teams' New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) opener on Saturday. Each of the Lyons' five losses has come by one goal.

Senior Elizabeth Rowland (Holliston, MA/Holliston) scored twice for the second straight game during Wheaton's victory at Bridgewater State's Swenson Field. Just 12:35 had elapsed when Rowland scored the game-winner, this one off a junior Shea Clarke (Bellingham, MA/Bellingham) assist. Nearly 12 minutes later, Rowland struck again by converting a helper from sophomore Sara Dimick (Cumberland, ME/Greely). Junior goalkeeper Mary Catherine Boll (Columbus, IN/Miss Porter's School) made five saves and has posted four straight shutouts dating back to last season. Meanwhile, Rowland is now ninth in program history with 17 career goals and tied for ninth with 41 points.

Against Springfield, the Lyons yielded the game's lone tally after less than 10 minutes and put a scare into a team that improved to 7-1. Entering the game, the Pride was ranked ninth by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) and had lost only to second-ranked Middlebury. In a contest played at Clark Field, senior netminder Emily Fiskio (Branford, CT/Branford) made 15 stops and Clarke recorded a defensive save to backstop a strong team effort. The visitors held advantages of 19-11 in shots and 11-9 in penalty corners.

Men's Soccer (5-3-0, 2-0-0) Wins Twice, Remains Perfect in NEWMAC Play

The Wheaton College men's soccer team won a pair of matches at Keefe Field last week and improved to 4-1 in its last five contests. The Lyons knocked off Brandeis University, 2-0 on Wednesday before remaining perfect in the NEWMAC behind a 2-1 win against Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) on Saturday.

Freshman Dan Lane (Dedham, MA/Worcester Academy) scored a pair of second-half goals as the Lyons fended off Brandeis, ranked 10th in New England by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA). At 64:47, Lane blasted home a free kick from 20 yards for what stood up as his third game-winning tally of the season. Less than 10 minutes later, he completed his first multi-goal game by rifling a shot past the diving Brandeis keeper off an assist from sophomore Reed Hollett (Bedford, Nova Scotia/Halifax Grammar School). Junior Matt Pachniuk (Newtown, CT/Newtown) finished with a season-high seven saves.

Against WPI, sophomore Colin Igoe (Weston, MA/Weston) notched his first career multi-goal game and helped the Lyons rally for victory. Seven minutes after the Engineers pulled in front, Igoe tallied at 27:49 off a cross from junior Chris Sentance (Concord, MA/Williston Northampton School). Less than three minutes after intermission, freshman Jeff Shea (Canton, MA/Canton) sent a cross from the right side of the field to Lane, who tipped the ball to Igoe. The midfielder rifled the game-winner into the left side of the net. Pachniuk had three stops.

Lane Named ECAC and NEWMAC Player of the Week

Lane was named Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) and NEWMAC Player of the Week for the week ending on Sunday, September 18. The freshman forward contributed three goals and two assists to the Wheaton attack during the Lyons' 2-1 week. At Western New England College, Lane netted what proved to be the game-winner as the Lyons won, 2-0. He followed that up by scoring once and assisting on the game-winner in a 3-0 victory at Springfield College. During a 3-2 loss to number-six Williams College, Lane collected a goal and an assist in a span of 4:41.

Women's Soccer (5-4-0, 1-0-0) Goes 1-1, Extends Conference Unbeaten Streak

The Wheaton College women's soccer team, tied for third in New England and ranked 22nd nationally by the NSCAA, had one long streak end while another continued during a 1-1 week. The Lyons saw their 49-game regular season home winning streak end with a 1-0 loss to Eastern Connecticut State University on Wednesday before rebounding with a 3-0 victory at Springfield College on Saturday. Wheaton extended its NEWMAC unbeaten streak to 53 contests with the win.

Against Eastern Connecticut State, the Lyons allowed the game's only goal just 6:15 into the contest. The loss was the first regular season defeat for Wheaton at Mirrione Stadium since suffering a 2-1 overtime setback to Colby College on October 2, 1999. Wheaton's last loss in a regular season home game that failed to reach overtime was on October 21, 1997, a 2-1 loss to Babson College. The Blue and White also hadn't been shut out at Mirrione during the regular season since September 14, 1997, a 1-0 final against Western Connecticut State University. Sophomore keeper Stacey Kronenberg (Belchertown, MA/Belchertown) stopped five shots as the Lyons held a 34-10 margin in shots.

Wheaton regrouped at Springfield's Brock-Affleck Field in the teams' NEWMAC opener, as the Lyons scored three times during a 9:14 span of the second half. Wheaton has not lost a conference game since October 17, 2000 against Wellesley College. The Lyons' league unbeaten stretch is the fourth-longest in NCAA Division III women's soccer history. Sophomore Lauren Konopka (Medford, NJ/Holy Cross) scored the first two Lyon goals, taking a pass from classmate Jenna Rabesa (Teaticket, MA/Falmouth) at 67:10 before converting sophomore Ashley Furr's (Chicopee, MA/Cathedral) throw-in at 73:51. Sophomore Julie McLane (New Canaan, CT/New Canaan) completed the offensive surge at 76:24 off assists by classmate Katelyn Brack (Lake Oswego, OR/Oregon Episcopal School) and freshman Angelamaria Viscomi (Newton, MA/Newton North). Kronenberg made three saves.

McLane Named NEWMAC Player of the Week

McLane was named NEWMAC Player of the Week for the week ending on Sunday, September 18. The sophomore forward became Wheaton's leading scorer in just two games during a 1-1 week, exploding for five goals and one assist. McLane posted her first career goal at Tufts, tying the game at two in the second half. Against Framingham State, McLane totaled four goals and one assist, tying her for second in program history in both goals and points during a single game. She recorded the Lyons' first nine-point game since September 2001 and became just the fifth Wheaton player to net four goals in the program's decorated history.

The Wheaton College women's tennis team dropped its only match of the week, a 9-0 final against Wellesley College on Tuesday in Beard Field House, before a trio of Lyons competed at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Regional Tournament at Bowdoin College on Friday.

Against Wellesley, the Lyons completed their home slate by being swept in a NEWMAC contest. At number-three doubles, junior Eden Gudonis (Manchester, MA/Governor Dummer Academy) and sophomore Maya Milic-Strkalj (Philadelphia, PA/Friends' Central School) had Wheaton's best showing, falling by an 8-5 score. Freshman Meghan Doyle (Hingham, MA/Hingham) was involved in the lone three-set singles match, with Doyle taking the first set, 6-3 before falling 6-4 in the second and finishing the match with a 10-5 defeat in the super tiebreaker.

On Friday, junior Jamie Weiss (Chicago, IL/Francis W. Parker School) provided a highlight for the Lyons by upsetting one of eight seeded athletes in the ITA Regional Tournament's 64-player singles field. Weiss knocked off the sixth seed by a 6-4, 4-6, 10-8 final in the opening round before falling in her next match. The Wheaton College women's volleyball team lost its only match of the week, falling to NEWMAC foe Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), 3-0 (16-30, 24-30, 14-30) at Emerson Gymnasium on Tuesday. It was the Lyons' first loss in three league contests.

The Lyons rallied from an early 6-2 deficit in game two behind a kill from senior Elizabeth Reagh (Seattle, WA/Seattle Lutheran) and six additional points from freshman Liana Merrill (Northwood, NH/Coe-Brown Northwood Academy) off the serve to take a 9-6 lead. However, MIT slowly came back and pulled away by scoring 18 of the game's final 28 points. Nursing a 9-7 advantage in game three, the Engineers scored 21 of the final 28 points.
