Field Hockey (1-4) Suffers Three One-Goal Losses, Including Pair of Overtime Setbacks

The Wheaton College field hockey team suffered a trio of one-goal losses this past week, including two that needed overtime to be settled. The Lyons fell at Endicott College, 2-1 in double overtime Tuesday before dropping a 2-1 decision in overtime against Simmons College on Thursday at Clark Field. Wheaton capped its week by narrowly losing to perennial New England power Bowdoin College, 1-0 at home on Sunday.

At Endicott, freshman Alisa Ardito (Branford, CT/Branford) broke a scoreless tie 12:48 into the second stanza off an assist from junior Rachel Sminkey (White River Junction, VT/Hartford). However, the Gulls knotted the game less than two minutes later before notching the game-winner with 2:05 gone in the second overtime. Senior keeper Emily Fiskio (Branford, CT/Branford) reached the 20-save plateau for the fifth time in her career, stopping exactly 20 shots, including seven during the first overtime period. Senior Diane Trifilo (Baldwinville, MA/Narragansett Regional) came up with two defensive saves and junior Shea Clarke (Bellingham, MA/Bellingham) recorded one.

Ardito gave the Lyons a 1-0 advantage against Simmons with 9:55 remaining in the first half, but the Sharks tallied the equalizer 1:18 later. After the teams remained deadlocked for the next 46 minutes of regulation and overtime, Fiskio made two saves on a breakaway opportunity, but a penalty ensued and a stroke was awarded after a Wheaton field player covered the ball. Just 2:28 into overtime, Simmons walked off with a victory. Fiskio finished the game with five saves while Trifilo and junior Elizabeth Reimers (Wareham, MA/Tabor Academy) made defensive saves.

The Lyons fell to Bowdoin despite a strong effort against one of the region's top programs. After a scoreless first half, during which Clarke collected a defensive save, the Polar Bears notched the game's only goal with 22:49 remaining in regulation. Fiskio notched 12 saves as Wheaton was outshot, 21-2. The Lyons have lost all four of their games this fall by a lone tally.

Men's Soccer (1-2-0) Splits Pair of One-Goal Decisions During 1-1 Week

The Wheaton College men's soccer team, ranked fifth in New England last week by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), knocked off Bridgewater State College, 1-0 on Wednesday before falling to Keene State College, 2-1 on Saturday as its 16-game home winning streak came to an end.

The Lyons improved to 11-0 all-time against Bridgewater State. Freshman Dan Lane (Dedham, MA/Worcester Academy) produced the game's only goal at 38:03 off a serve from sophomore Jim Ferriero (Medway, MA/Medway). It was Lane's first collegiate tally. Junior keeper Matt Pachniuk (Newtown, CT/Newtown) made a pair of saves for the shutout as Wheaton held a 13-7 shot advantage and 6-2 edge in corner kicks.

Against Keene State, the Lyons lost at Keefe Field for the first time since September 27, 2003. Keene State, ranked second in New England and tied for 14th in the nation, converted an odd-man rush in the 30th minute before Wheaton knotted the game at 67:41 on freshman Mathurin Coulibaly's (Ivory Coast, Africa/Saint George's School) first collegiate goal. Sophomore Dan Chong (Miami, FL/Coral Reef) assisted. Just 14 minutes later, the Owls netted the game-winner before fending off a flurry of Wheaton scoring chances at the end. Pachniuk finished with five saves.

Women's Soccer (3-2-0) Wins Home Opener Before Losing Twice to Midwest Foes

The Wheaton College women's soccer team, ranked first in New England and third nationally in last week's National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) poll, won its home opener before dropping a pair of games during a Midwest road swing. The Lyons tipped Endicott College, 1-0 on Tuesday at Mirrione Stadium and extended their regular season home winning streak to 48 games. During Wheaton's road trip, the Lyons had their 36-game regular season winning streak snapped due to a 4-1 loss at the University of Chicago on Friday and fell in consecutive games for the first time in seven years after a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Washington University in Saint Louis on Sunday.

Against Endicott, sophomore Jenna Stiegler's (Madison, WI/Middleton) first collegiate goal late in the first half stood as the game's lone tally, and the Lyons improved to 3-0. Stiegler netted her unassisted game-winner at 40:34 after collecting a giveaway in the Endicott box. Sophomore Stacey Kronenberg (Belchertown, MA/Belchertown) went untested in net to earn her third consecutive shutout. For the game, the Lyons held a 23-3 advantage in shots and a 9-3 edge in corner kicks.

Chicago, which was ranked in the NSCAA preseason poll before splitting with a pair of ranked foes, became the first team to net four goals against Wheaton since an NCAA Tournament game on November 3, 2001. However, it was the first time the Lyons allowed that many goals in a regular season contest since October 5, 1995. After the Maroon took a 2-0 lead, senior Teresa LeBel (Middleton, MA/Northfield Mount Hermon) scored at the 60-minute mark off sophomore Erin Davis' (Easton, CT/Joel Barlow) helper to trim the deficit, but Chicago tacked on two more goals. Kronenberg stopped eight shots.

On Sunday at Washington, the Lyons tied the game in the 17th minute on junior Bridget Furlong's (Newburyport, MA/Newburyport) goal after a LeBel corner kick, but Washington netted two second-half goals to seal the victory. Kronenberg made seven saves as Wheaton lost consecutive games for the first time since October, 1998.

Men's Tennis Defends Grass Court Doubles Title at International Hall of Fame

The Wheaton College men's tennis team defended its Grass Court Doubles Championship title on Saturday, fending off Division II Stonehill College by one point at the International Tennis Hall of Fame in a tournament hosted by Salve Regina University. Wheaton collected 15 points and Stonehill notched 14 as the only squads in the six-team field with more than four points.

The tandem of senior Matt Sheers (Beacon, NY/Beacon) and junior Payum Payman (Pleasant Valley, NY/Arlington) defended their first-doubles crown at the tournament. Sheers and Payman opened the day by splitting the first two sets with a team from Vassar, 4-6, 6-3 before recording a 10-7 super-tiebreaker win in the third set. After defeating a duo from Salve Regina, 8-4 in a pro-set, Sheers and Payman decisively knocked off a Stonehill pairing, 8-4 in the championship match.

At third doubles, juniors Brian Danishevsky (Hamden, CT/Hamden Hall Country Day) and Brad Dressler (Cranston, RI/Cranston West) won the championship, with Danishevsky repeating after helping Wheaton's number-three doubles to a crown in 2004. The Lyon juniors first defeated Salve Regina, 6-0, 6-1 before dominating a tandem from Division I Holy Cross, 6-0, 6-0. In the championship, Danishevsky and Dressler swept past a Stonehill twosome, 8-0.

Women's Tennis (3-1) Continues Early Success with 2-1 Week

The Wheaton College women's tennis team knocked off Gordon College, 8-1 on Monday at the Clark Tennis Courts before splitting a pair of matches in New York over the weekend. The Lyons fell to Skidmore College, 5-4 on Saturday but rebounded with a convincing 9-0 win over Union College on Sunday.

Against Gordon, the Lyons won their first two matches for the third straight season. Wheaton opened play by taking two of three doubles points. At number one, juniors Jamie Weiss (Chicago, IL/Francis W. Parker School) and Darby McDermott (Briarcliff Manor, NY/Hackley School) teamed for a win before sophomore Maya Milic-Strkalj (Philadelphia, PA/Friends' Central School) and freshman Samantha Schraeter (Rye, NY/Rye) picked up a victory at three. In singles play, Weiss, McDermott, Milic-Strkalj, sophomore Briana Jackson (Redding, CT/Joel Barlow) and freshmen Meghan Doyle (Hingham, MA/Hingham) and Mallory Farmer (Washington, CT/The Gunnery) each notched victories.

Wheaton lost all three doubles points during its tight match to Skidmore. In singles play, the Lyons notched four wins, two of which went to three-set matches. Weiss won at one and McDermott at two, while Jackson took a victory at fourth singles and Schraeter collected a solid win at six.

The Lyons relinquished only one set in singles play en route to a sweep of Union. In doubles, the teams of Weiss and McDermott, Jackson and Milic-Strkalj and Doyle and Farmer all won. Singles action saw Weiss, McDermott, Doyle, Jackson, Milic-Strkalj and Farmer each claim wins, including five in straight sets.

Women's Volleyball (2-5) Splits Four Matches at Johnson & Wales Tournament

Behind its first wins under new head coach Kelli Myers, the Wheaton College women's volleyball team split four matches at the Johnson & Wales University Tournament on Friday and Saturday. In the tournament's opening day, the Lyons fell to Bridgewater State College, 3-1 (30-24, 22-30, 18-30, 28-30) before knocking off host Johnson & Wales, 3-1 (30-25, 30-17, 17-30, 30-26). Wheaton lost to UMass-Dartmouth, 3-0 (27-30, 29-31, 25-30) to begin play Saturday before sweeping Suffolk University, 3-0 (30-20, 30-22, 30-19).

Against Bridgewater State, the Lyons took the first game before dropping the next three. Senior Marriah Vengroff (Storrs, CT/E.O. Smith) recorded 17 kills. Classmates Carilyn Tately (Walpole, MA/Walpole) and Elizabeth Reagh (Seattle, WA/Seattle Lutheran) came up with 17 and 11 digs, respectively, while junior setter Alexis Liesman (Winchester, CA/West Valley) provided 30 assists.

Vengroff contributed 15 kills, Tately had 12 digs, Liesman tallied 39 assists and junior Allison Reichentahl (Cheshire, CT/Cheshire) racked up seven service aces.

Tately led the Lyons with 16 digs against UMass-Dartmouth, while Vengroff collected nine kills and Liesman notched 27 assists. In Wheaton's tournament finale against Suffolk, Reagh recorded another double-double, going for 10 kills and 10 digs. Smith and Vengroff accounted for 15 and 13 kills, respectively, while Tately made 16 digs and Liesman supplied 36 assists.

Sophomore All-America runner Megan Brousseau (Attleboro, MA/Attleboro) led the women with a seventh-place finish, crossing the 5,000-meter finish line in 19:57. A trio of newcomers followed Brousseau, as freshmen Amanda Rawson (Dudley, MA/Shepherd Hill Regional) and Lily Calderwood (Harvard, MA/Bromfield School), and sophomore Abbe Bosk (Narberth, PA/Springside) took 21st, 22nd and 23rd, respectively.
