Field Hockey (1-1) Opens Season With Heartbreaking Loss Before Cruising to Victory

The Wheaton College field hockey team opened its season last week by splitting a pair of non-conference games at Clark Field. The Lyons suffered a 2-1 loss in double overtime to Salve Regina University on Thursday before rolling past Regis College, 5-0 on Saturday.

With just 48 seconds remaining in the second overtime against Salve, the visitors netted the game winner past senior goalkeeper Emily Fiskio (Branford, CT/Branford). Freshman Alisa Ardito (Branford, CT/Branford) gave the Lyons a 1-0 lead as she notched her first collegiate tally 3:22 into the second half, but Salve Regina knotted the score with 18:18 left in regulation. Senior Leigh-Anne Cioffredi (Lebanon, NH/Lebanon) assisted on Ardito's goal before making a defensive save in the first overtime session. Fiskio finished with nine saves as Wheaton held a 32-14 advantage in shots and 14-5 edge in penalty corners.

On Saturday, Ardito and junior Rachel Sminkey (White River Junction, VT/Hartford) each supplied two goals and an assist, and the Lyons used a dominating first half to cruise to victory. Wheaton netted four first-half goals and blanked Regis in shots, 13-0 and penalty corners, 9-0 during the opening stanza. Sophomore Lyndsie Ryalls (Branford, CT/Branford) netted the game winner 3:58 into the contest while junior keeper Mary Catherine Boll (Columbus, IN/Miss Porter's School) stopped two shots for her second career shutout. Junior Shea Clarke (Bellingham, MA/Bellingham) and sophomore Ashley Miller (East Bridgewater, MA/East Bridgewater) each recorded assists during the game, and Wheaton finished with 24-2 and 13-4 leads in shots and penalty corners, respectively.

Men's Soccer (0-1-0) Falls at SUNY New Paltz in Only Action of the Week

The Wheaton College men's soccer team, ranked 15th in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) preseason poll, opened the season by dropping a 1-0 decision at SUNY New Paltz in the Lyons' only action last week.

A goal by the Hawks with 1:40 remaining in regulation stood as the contest's lone tally. Junior netminder Matt Pachniuk (Newtown, CT/Newtown) stopped five shots for the Lyons. Wheaton held a 7-4 advantage in corner kicks but was outshot, 10-5.

Women's Soccer (2-0-0) Posts Pair of 2-0 Wins in Season's First Week

The Wheaton College women's soccer team, ranked third in the NSCAA's preseason poll, picked up a pair of 2-0 road victories to open its season last week. The Lyons blanked Western Connecticut State University on Thursday before traveling to Husson College for a Saturday win.

At Western Connecticut, the Lyons took down the defending Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) New England champions behind six saves from sophomore Stacey Kronenberg (Belchertown, MA/Belchertown). Junior Bridget Furlong (Newburyport, MA/Newburyport) broke a scoreless deadlock at 41:27 thanks to a helper from classmate Courtney Hale (Andover, MA/Andover). Senior Kate Miller (Williamstown, MA/Mount Greylock Regional) doubled Wheaton's lead at 62:32, as sophomore Lauren Konopka (Medford, NJ/Holy Cross) sent a cross to a wide open Miller on the left post. Each team collected 13 shots while the Lyons held a slim 5-3 edge in corners.

In the Lyons' win at Husson, Wheaton decisively outshot the Eagles, 41-2 and broke the stalemate in the 69th minute when sophomore Ashley Furr (Chicopee, MA/Cathedral) headed home a cross from freshman Angelamaria Viscomi (Newton, MA/Newton North). Exactly six minutes later the Lyons doubled their lead as Furlong sent a through ball from the top of the box to sophomore Jenna Rabesa (Teaticket, MA/Falmouth), who directed her shot into the lower corner of the net. Kronenberg notched her second shutout of the season.

Women's Tennis (1-0) Begins 2005 Campaign With Easy Victory

The Wheaton College women's tennis squad opened its 2005 season by cruising past Plymouth State University, 8-1 on Friday at the Clark Tennis Courts. In a match that began in the afternoon and ended under the lights, the Lyons took all but two sets in singles play and won two doubles matches by 8-0 scores.

Wheaton swept all three points in doubles action, with juniors Jamie Weiss (Chicago, IL/Francis W. Parker School) and Darby McDermott (Briarcliff Manor, NY/Hackley School) kicking things off with an 8-0 win in the number-one spot. Sophomore Briana Jackson (Redding, CT/Joel Barlow) and freshman Meghan Doyle (Hingham, MA/Hingham) took an 8-4 decision at second doubles while the Lyons picked up another 8-0 victory at number three thanks to the team of sophomore Maya Milic-Strkalj (Philadelphia, PA/Friends' Central School) and freshman Mallory Farmer (Washington, CT/The Gunnery). In singles play, Weiss paced the Lyons with a 6-1, 6-1 win at the first spot. McDermott, Doyle and Jackson were victorious at two, three and four, respectively, while Milic-Strkalj won at number six.

Women's Volleyball (0-3) Opens New Era, Competes at Gordon Tournament

On its first day of competition under first-year head coach Kelli Myers, the Wheaton College women's volleyball team dropped three decisions at the Gordon Tournament. The Lyons fell to Endicott College, 3-1 (32-30, 16-30, 14-30, 23-30) and Albion College (MI), 3-0 (18-30, 25-30, 25-30) in their first two matches before finishing the day with a heartbreaking five-game loss to Gordon College, 3-2 (33-31, 30-28, 23-30, 19-30, 10-15).

Against Endicott, Wheaton won the first game before dropping the next three. Senior Marriah Vengroff (Storrs, CT/E.O. Smith) collected 15 kills to lead the offense while juniors Tonia Smith (White Plains, NY/Alexander Hamilton) and Ashley Emerson (Ashford, CT/E.O. Smith) notched 11 and seven kills, respectively. Junior setter Alexis Liesman (Winchester, CA/West Valley) provided 36 assists in the loss.

Senior Elizabeth Reagh (Seattle, WA/Seattle Lutheran) had 13 digs and nine kills against Albion while Smith provided 12 digs and eight kills. Liesman posted 28 assists, senior Carilyn Tately (Walpole, MA/Walpole) recorded 18 digs and Vengroff picked up eight kills.

The third match of the day ended with the Lyons on the losing end of a five-game barnburner after leading, 2-0. Liesman contributed 45 assists while Tately and junior Allison Reichentahl (Cheshire, CT/Cheshire) notched 22 and 12 digs, respectively. Reagh posted 15 kills and nine digs, and Smith and Vengroff added 14 kills apiece.
