Weekly LyonMen's Lacrosse (9-7-1, 6-2) Advances to Program's First ECAC Tournament Title TiltThe second-seeded Wheaton College men's lacrosse team went 1-1 in its final week of the 2006 season, downing number three University of Massachusetts at Boston, 19-9 on Wednesday in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Tournament semifinals before falling at top-seeded Keene State College, 19-10 during the Lyons' first ECAC Tournament championship game. In head coach Peter Toner's first season, Wheaton finished with the third-most wins in program history. The Lyons picked up their first ECAC Tournament semifinal win in three tries as five players notched at least three points. It was the Blue and White's first meeting with UMass-Boston. Junior Trey Helms (Cockeysville, MD/Saint Paul's School) tallied career highs of five assists and seven points, while senior Ellis Reavey (Longmeadow, MA/Longmeadow) netted a game-best four goals and six points. Classmate Adam Cohen (Montpelier, VT/Montpelier) tacked on three assists and five points, while senior Taylor Jackson (Middlesex, VT/Union 32) and junior Andrew Rohan (South Hadley, MA/Avon Old Farms) added a hat trick each. Junior long-stick defenseman Chris Hade (Franklin Lakes, NJ/Dwight-Englewood School) scored his first goal of the season after a full-field rush, while freshman defender Marco Barbone (Newton, MA/Newton North) tallied his initial collegiate marker on his first career shot after trailing Cohen upfield in transition. Sophomore Jeremy Beech (West Newbury, MA/Governor Dummer Academy) made seven saves. In its first meeting with Keene State, Wheaton made its first trip to the ECAC Tournament title game. The Lyons never led but pulled within one on three occasions, the last when Jackson scored 53 seconds into the second period. However, the hosts tallied the next five goals to begin pulling away and led, 9-3 at 11:39 of the third. A trio of seniors recorded multiple goals in their final college appearances, as Cohen led the way with a hat trick. Jackson and John Sharry (Westwood, MA/Westwood) each scored a pair of markers, with Sharry adding an assist, while Beech made 10 stops. Outdoor Track and Field Participates at All New England ChampionshipSenior Kendra Leith (Holden, MA/Wachusett Regional) broke her own school record in the 5,000-meter run to highlight the Wheaton College men's and women's outdoor track and field teams' participation at the All New England Championship over the weekend at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). The Lyon women placed 14th out of 37 teams, while Wheaton's men came in 33rd. Leith finished the 5,000M in 17:46.31, eclipsing her own two-year-old program mark by 7.78 seconds and coming within 0.31 ticks of an NCAA Championship provisional qualifying time. Junior Jennifer Harlow (East Bridgewater, MA/East Bridgewater) met an NCAA meet standard with a 5' 7" showing in the high jump, tying for the second-highest mark in the event. Freshman Chizoba Ezeigwe (Brockton, MA/Thayer Academy) turned in a pair of seventh-place showings, including a provisional qualifying time of 25.29 during the 200-meter dash. In the 100-meter dash, Ezeigwe came within 0.11 ticks of an NCAA provisional time. Wheaton's 4x400-meter relay foursome, comprised of Ezeigwe and fellow freshmen Natana Jules (Brooklyn, NY/Boys and Girls), Celeste Karpow (Wilton, CT/Wilton) and Christine Moreau (Lincoln, RI/Lincoln), turned in a provisional time by finishing fourth in 3:56.9. Ezeigwe, Harlow, Moreau and freshman Samira Sanders (Brooklyn, NY/Boys and Girls) led the 4x100-meter relay quartet to a sixth-place finish. On the men's side, freshman Michael Wright (Baldwin, NY/Uniondale) completed the 100-meter dash in 11.1, which was just 0.1 seconds out of the last scoring position. Wright, senior Ajay Sisodia (Andover, MA/Andover), and freshmen Jonathan Cunha (Lexington, MA/Lexington) and Victor Martinez (Exeter, NH/Phillips Exeter Academy) combined on the Lyons' sixth-place 4x100-meter relay team, which finished in 43.00, exactly one second off a provisional qualifying time.
