At 26th in the most recent American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) poll, the Blue and White's nine-game winning streak is tied for the fourth longest in program history, and the Lyon pitching staff has posted a 1.40 earned run average during that time. Wheaton opened the week with a 9-3 win over visiting Suffolk University on Tuesday before downing Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), 6-5 on Thursday. On Sunday, the Lyons took both ends of a doubleheader from Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), 8-2 and 4-0. Against Suffolk at Sidell Stadium, the Lyons rallied from a run down with eight runs during one three-inning stretch. The Lyons opened the bottom of the third with four straight hits, as sophomore Scott Guillerault (South Portland, ME/South Portland) smacked a game-tying double before classmate Pat O'Connor (Mattapoisett, MA/Old Rochester Regional) brought in two runs with his second home run of the season. Guillerault followed with his fifth dinger with two down in the following inning. During the fifth, Wheaton junior Travis Anthoine (Portland, ME/Portland) was plunked with the bases loaded, and senior Andy Koocher's (Portland, ME/Portland) two-out, two-run single made the score 8-1. Koocher finished 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI, Guillerault went 2-for-5 with three RBI and two runs, while sophomore Jake Yagjian (Brewster, MA/Nauset Regional) had a 2-for-3 showing. Senior Chris Martin (Marshfield, PA/Marshfield) picked up the win after going six innings, yielding just four hits and two unearned runs while not walking a batter and striking out six. Yagjian's two-out, RBI double in the top of the ninth propelled Wheaton past host MIT and completed a comeback after being down 5-3 with two down and no one on in the eighth. The Lyons took a 3-0 lead with a pair of runs in the third and one in the fourth, but MIT countered with five runs in the fifth. In the eighth, Anthoine reached on a two-out error, junior Brandon Leonard (Brockton, MA/Brockton) drew a walk, and Koocher plated the pair with a two-run double. With two down in a 5-5 ballgame in the ninth, junior Adam Laplante (Harwich, MA/Harwich) singled and trotted home with the eventual game-winning run on Yagjian's two bagger. Senior Jamie Baker (Boxford, MA/Masconomet Regional) closed out the contest with a perfect ninth. Koocher finished 3-for-5 with two RBI, Anthoine was 2-for-4 with two runs, and Guillerault went 2-for-4. Freshman Jared Barnes (North Attleboro, MA/Bishop Feehan) struck out two batters in two scoreless innings of relief, while classmate Josh Simmons (Cranston, RI/Cranston West) picked up his first collegiate win following a scoreless eighth. The Lyons dispatched WPI during a NEWMAC twinbill at Sidell Stadium. The Blue and White used a pair of four-run innings and a solid outing from sophomore southpaw Chris McDonough (Weymouth, MA/Weymouth) for a win in the opener. WPI took a 1-0 lead in the first, but the Lyons plated four runs on four hits in the fourth as Leonard, Yagjian and senior Mark Baumer (Durham, ME/Greely) each drove in a run. Wheaton countered the Engineers' sixth-inning run with four of its own, as the hosts batted around and smacked five hits. Koocher, Leonard, O'Connor and senior Mark Brown (Chelmsford, MA/Chelmsford) each came through with an RBI. Leonard finished 3-for-4 with two runs, Yagjian was 2-for-3 with two runs, O'Connor went 2-for-3, and Laplante batted 2-for-4 with two runs. McDonough allowed one earned run on two hits with three walks and eight strikeouts during a complete-game effort. The Blue and White turned in its first shutout of the season during the second contest, as the Lyon pitching staff allowed only four hits while fanning 11 batters. Sophomore Louie Bernardini (Gray, ME/Gray-New Gloucester) tossed seven scoreless innings while striking out seven and walking one, and Baker notched his fifth save, tying for third in a single season in program history. Laplante scored the eventual winning run after stealing third and coming home on an error in the second and drove in a run with a sacrifice fly in the third. Yagjian's RBI single and Anthoine's run-scoring double completed the scoring. Yagjian was 3-for-4, while Anthoine and Guillerault each had two hits. Baker Named Co-Pitcher of the Week by Both ECAC and NEWMACBaker was named co-pitcher of the week by both the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) and NEWMAC for the week ending on Sunday, April 2. Baker played a crucial part in three one-run wins during Wheaton's 5-0 week, as the Lyons' closer picked up a pair of wins and a save. During four innings over three games, he allowed only two of 13 batters to reach while opponents went 0-for-9 against the righty, striking out five times. Baker pitched a pair of scoreless innings to corral the win against Brandeis on March 28 before tossing a perfect ninth during the Lyons' victory over Endicott on March 31. In a NEWMAC win versus Springfield on April 2, he inherited a runner in the ninth before setting down three of four batters he faced, including two via strikeouts, for his third save of the season. Men's Lacrosse (3-5-1, 1-2) Earns First Pilgrim League Victory During 1-1 WeekThe Wheaton College men's lacrosse team split a pair of Pilgrim League contests last week, earning its first conference victory, 12-4 triumph against Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) on Wednesday. The Lyons fell on Saturday at perennial league power Springfield College, 19-9. Junior Andrew Rohan (South Hadley, MA/Avon Old Farms) recorded four goals and two assists, and senior Ellis Reavey (Longmeadow, MA/Longmeadow) added a hat trick as the Lyons downed MIT at Mirrione Stadium. Wheaton held a 3-2 lead after one quarter and outscored MIT, 2-0 in the second to begin pulling away. In the first period, the teams traded two goals each before junior Trey Helms (Cockeysville, MD/Saint Paul's School) put the Lyons up for good off an assist from classmate Larry Nussbaum (Glastonbury, CT/Avon Old Farms) with 18.3 seconds remaining. In the second half, the Lyons scored seven of the game's final nine goals. Rohan played a hand in three of Wheaton's fourth-quarter goals, beginning with his third marker at 5:57, and senior Taylor Jackson (Middlesex, VT/Union 32) scored twice. Sophomore Jeremy Beech (West Newbury, MA/Governor Dummer Academy) finished with five saves in three quarters before giving way to junior Tristan Colglazier (Lutherville, MD/Saint Paul's School), who made two stops during the final period. Against Springfield, the Lyons allowed 19 goals for the first time in nearly three years. Wheaton held the Pride scoreless until 3:59 remained in the opening period, and Jackson tallied at 2:12 to knot the score before Springfield rattled off the next six goals and 11 of the next 12 to forge a 12-2 lead with 13:58 remaining in the third. Jackson notched three goals and an assist, while senior Adam Cohen (Montpelier, VT/Montpelier) tallied a hat trick. Helms netted a pair, while Beech stopped 15 shots. Women's Lacrosse (4-4, 2-1) Has 14-Game Regular Season Conference Win Streak EndThe Wheaton College women's lacrosse team dropped a rematch of the last four NEWMAC Tournament championship games during its only action last week, falling at Springfield College, 13-8 on Saturday. The Lyons had a 14-game regular season conference winning streak snapped, losing such a contest for the first time since April 15, 2003. Springfield rattled off three straight goals in a little under 10 minutes of the first half to claim a 4-1 lead before the Lyons attempted to rally. During an 8:44 span that stretched into the second period, senior Julia Coit (South Portland, ME/South Portland) notched a hat trick to counter the Pride's trio of tallies, and freshman Bridget Thornton (Southington, CT/Cheshire Academy) brought the Lyons within 7-5 as 26:34 remained in regulation. However, the hosts netted six straight goals to corral a 13-5 advantage. With less than five minutes left, Wheaton tacked on the final three markers. Coit's three tallies led the Lyons, while junior Kristin Konig (Montecito, CA/Cate School) stopped 13 shots. Konig Honored as NEWMAC Co-Player of the WeekKonig earned NEWMAC Co-Player-of-the-Week honors for the week ending on Sunday, April 2. Wheaton's junior goalie backstopped the Lyons to a 2-1 mark, posting a 6.85 goals against average and .719 save percentage. She picked up victories against Bridgewater State College on March 27 and NEWMAC counterpart Mount Holyoke College on April 1. Her only loss came by an 11-4 final to sixth-ranked Bowdoin College on March 29, as she stopped 28 shots, the most saves for a Wheaton goalie since 1999, and limited an offense which was averaging 16.8 goals. During the week, Konig made 46 saves and allowed 18 goals during 157:36 in net. Softball (18-7, 7-2) Uses Perfect 5-0 Slate to Move into Second in NEWMACThe nationally-ranked Wheaton College softball team notched a 5-0 mark last week, moving from a three-way tie for fourth in the NEWMAC into sole possession of second place. Ranked 12th in the most recent National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) poll, the Lyons tallied each of their wins against conference opponents, beginning with a doubleheader sweep at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), 2-1 and 3-1 on Thursday. Wheaton downed Babson College, 3-2 in 10 innings on Friday before the second game of their twinbill was suspended after the fourth inning, and the Blue and White picked up 5-3 and 3-2 wins over visiting Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) on Sunday. Wheaton snapped a four-game losing streak at MIT. With the Lyons down by a run in the fifth inning of game one, junior Keely Nowosacki (Shrewsbury, MA/Shrewsbury) tripled with one out and scored on a two-out error. Sophomore Jodi Moynagh (Worcester, MA/Holy Name Central Catholic) maintained the tie by fanning the final three batters of the sixth after the first two Engineers reached, and junior Jessica DePolito (Taunton, MA/Coyle and Cassidy) led off the following inning with a triple before sophomore pinch-runner Meredith Gorton (Warwick, NY/Warwick Valley) scored on Nowosacki's one-out double. Moynagh allowed only a first-inning run while yielding five hits and fanning nine. During the second game, sophomore Alix Brozman's (Chappaqua, NY/Horace Greeley) two-out RBI single in the second frame gave the Lyons a 1-0 lead. With runners on the corners in the fifth, Brozman swiped second, and an MIT miscue allowed freshman Jessica DeRico (Griswold, CT/Griswold) to score from third and Brozman to come all the way around from second. Brozman went 3-for-3, and sophomore Audrey Poulton (Charlestown, RI/Chariho Regional) was 2-for-3. On the mound, Poulton faced three batters in each the second through sixth innings and allowed only a seventh-inning run while yielding four hits and no walks while striking out eight. At Babson, the Lyons rallied for a victory before the second contest was suspended following the fourth inning with the visitors leading, 4-1. The game will resume on Thursday at 5:00 p.m. After allowing a pair of solo home runs in the first inning, Poulton limited Babson to just four base runners and one hit - a one-out single in the fifth - over the final 9.1 innings. The Lyons broke through in the fourth, as Poulton trotted home from third base on an infield error. In the seventh, Gorton reaching on an error to begin the inning and came around on junior Nicole Lachance's (Rochester, NH/Spaulding) one-out double. Babson put runners on second and third with one down in the ninth, but Poulton induced a pair of groundouts to end the frame. In the 10th inning, Wheaton used the international tiebreaker and a pair of walks to load the bases with two down, and sophomore Erika Marini (Pawtucket, RI/Saint Raphael Academy) singled up the middle to drive in freshman pinch-runner Lynn Cotto (Brookfield, CT/Brookfield) with the eventual game-winning run. Lachance went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles, while Brozman finished 2-for-5. Poulton earned the win after allowing only the three hits and two runs during 10 innings of work, and she walked three and struck out four. The Lyons capped their week with a sweep of WPI at Clark Field. After Poulton lost her no-hit bid to the leadoff hitter in the fifth, Wheaton broke a scoreless deadlock with five runs in the bottom half. With runners on second and third and one down, Lachance singled home freshman Katelynn Hanewich (Bradenton, FL/Lakewood Ranch), and DePolito cracked a grand slam one out later for a 5-0 lead. DePolito's hit was the 100th of her college career. WPI responded with three runs on three hits in the sixth. However, Poulton retired the side in order during the seventh to preserve the win. DePolito finished 2-for-3 while also roping a double. Poulton allowed four singles, three earned runs and two walks while striking out seven. During the back half of the twinbill, Lachance led off the contest with a home run before the Engineers, who picked up their first hit in the fourth inning, knotted the score with two down in the fifth. In the bottom of the inning, Lachance led off with a walk, moved to second on a sacrifice, stole third and scored on an illegal pitch with two outs. Marini gave Wheaton a 3-1 edge by leading off the sixth with a home run, but WPI put together a threat in the seventh. The Engineers put runners on second and third with one down before an RBI groundout made the score 3-2 and positioned a WPI runner on third with two down, but Moynagh completed the contest by inducing a fly ball. Moynagh yielded one earned run on four hits and fanned five during seven innings. Men's Tennis (7-3, 2-0) Goes 2-1, Moves into First-Place Tie in NEWMACThe Wheaton College men's tennis team recorded a 2-1 mark last week, beginning play on Friday with a 7-0 home win over nationally-ranked New York University. The Lyons knocked off the United States Coast Guard Academy, 7-0 on Saturday at Beard Field House to move into a tie for first in the NEWMAC before finishing play on Sunday with a 5-2 loss at fellow regional power Tufts University. Against New York University, the Lyons picked up a sweep of the 22nd-ranked team in the most recent Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) poll. In singles, junior Payum Payman (Pleasant Valley, NY/Arlington), sophomore Sean Daly (Miami, FL/La Salle), junior Brian Danishevsky (Hamden, CT/Hamden Hall Country Day School), senior Matt Sheers (Beacon, NY/Beacon), junior Brad Dressler (Cranston, RI/Cranston West), and senior Nick Potter (Concord, NH/Concord) won at the first through sixth slots, respectively. The doubles tandem of Danishevsky and Dressler picked up a number-two victory to clinch the doubles point after Potter and Sheers combined on a third-position win. Wheaton did not relinquish a set en route to downing Coast Guard. Senior Jeff Selesnick (Concord, NH/Concord) notched the most convincing singles victory, corralling a 6-1, 6-1 decision at the sixth slot, while Payman, Daly, Danishevsky, Dressler, and Potter each picked up straight-set wins. The teams of Payman and Daly, Danishevsky and Dressler, and Potter and Sheers made quick work of their doubles opponents, combining to drop only nine points. The Lyons, who are ranked ninth in the ITA's Northeast poll, fell to 12th-ranked Tufts. Payman earned a 6-3, 6-1 victory at first singles, and Dressler was the only other Lyon to record a singles victory, rallying from one set down for a 1-6, 7-5, 6-2 win at number five. Potter nearly picked up another point but lost a three-set marathon via a super tiebreaker. Payman and Daly tallied the lone doubles win for the Lyons, responding from a 4-0 deficit to grab a 9-7 win at the top position. Wheaton Tandem Earns Weekly NEWMAC Doubles AwardDaly and Payman secured the NEWMAC Doubles Team of the Week for the week ending on Sunday, April 2. The duo picked up a dramatic 9-8 victory in a tiebreaker that lifted the Lyons to a thrilling 4-3 win over regionally-ranked Bowdoin College on March 28.
