Roberts Helps Men's Swimming and Diving Tie for 37th at NCAA Championship

Junior Barrett Roberts (Portland, ME/Deering) posted a pair of NCAA All-America honorable mention finishes and broke a school record while helping the Wheaton College men's swimming and diving team tie for 37th place at the NCAA Division III Championship during the weekend of March 16-18 at the University of Minnesota's Aquatic Center. The three-day meet was the third successive national championship for Roberts, who tallied 13 points in a pair of freestyle events.

The only swimmer to earn All-America laurels in the program's 15-year history, Roberts kicked off the championship with a 10th-place finish in 20.73 during the 50-yard freestyle finals, missing his own school mark by 0.02 seconds on March 16. The next day, Roberts broke his own school mark in the 200-yard freestyle, finishing 25th in 1:43.38 and surpassing his year-old program standard by 2.04 seconds. Roberts capped his weekend by qualifying for the consolation final of the 100-yard freestyle on March 18, taking 11th in 45.86 while finishing 0.34 seconds off his Wheaton record.

Synchronized Swimming Takes Fourth out of Eight Teams at ECAC Championship

The Wheaton College synchronized swimming team came in fourth out of eight teams at the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championship held at Keuka College on March 18-19. With 69 points, the Lyons were one point behind the College of William & Mary. Canisius College captured the team title with 101 points and host Keuka was second with 83.

Wheaton's top finishes came in the team and solo routines. Kovacs took fourth in the solo routine while joining Syracuse for a sixth-place duet performance, and Wheaton's trio of Corman, Kinney and Swinkin finished sixth. In figures, Swinkin led the way in the C category, placing second to a swimmer from William & Mary. Kapp took fourth in D figures, Kinney eighth in the B category, Ru-Huey Yen eighth in D and Paglio ninth in D.

The Lyons turn their attention to this weekend's United States Collegiate Championship at Stanford University, where Wheaton hopes to improve upon last year's seventh-place finish.

Seven Track and Field Athletes Earn All-America Status at NCAA Indoor Championship, Wheaton Opens Outdoor Season with Strong Individual Finishes at Aztec Classic

The Wheaton College indoor track and field teams' seasons came to an end at the NCAA Division III Championship on March 10-11, as the women finished 14th out of 55 teams and the men tied for 22nd among 52 squads at Saint Olaf College's Tostrud Center. The outdoor season then opened last weekend, as a number of Lyons recorded strong showings at San Diego State University's Aztec Classic.

Seven Wheaton athletes recorded All-America finishes at the indoor national championship. Junior Jennifer Harlow (East Bridgewater, MA/East Bridgewater) led the way, not only defending her All-America status in the high jump but also winning the event after recording the highest leap in Division III this winter. Harlow paced the 15-athlete field with a 5' 7 3/4" performance, which was 1 1/4 inches better than the second-place finisher and also set a facility record by exactly two inches. Freshman Chizoba Ezeigwe (Brockton, MA/Thayer Academy) also earned All-America honors with a fifth-place 400-meter dash finish in 57.05, which bettered her trials time by 0.20 seconds. Ezeigwe joined first-years Lily Calderwood (Harvard, MA/Bromfield School), Natana Jules (Brooklyn, NY/Boys and Girls) and Celeste Karpow (Wilton, CT/Wilton) as Wheaton's 4x400-meter relay placed ninth in 4:01.00.

For the men, freshman Jonathan Cunha (Lexington, MA/Lexington) nabbed All-America honors after a fourth-place finish during the 400-meter dash in 48.67. Cunha, senior Ajay Sisodia (Andover, MA/Andover) and freshmen Victor Martinez (Exeter, NH/Phillips Exeter Academy) and Michael Wright (Baldwin, NY/Uniondale) finished the 4x400-meter relay in sixth at 3:20.30, each earning All-America accolades.

Four Lyons notched victories during the Aztec Classic, and a pair of women recorded provisional qualifications for the NCAA Championship. Wheaton's men turned in a sweep of the 100-, 200- and 400-meter dash events on Saturday. Wright won the 100M in 10.99, just 0.27 seconds shy of the school record, while Cunha took first in the 400M in 48.82 and Sisodia placed fourth. During the 200M competition, the Lyons took the top three spots, as Sisodia paced the field in 22.01 while falling 0.23 ticks short of the program standard, Cunha came in second at 22.02, and Wright was third in 22.06.

In the first outdoor race of her college career, Ezeigwe met NCAA provisional times in a pair of events. Ezeigwe placed second in the 400-meter dash in 56.04, just 0.32 seconds behind a San Diego State runner, while claiming sixth in the 200-meter dash at 24.85, just 0.22 seconds out of a tie for second place. Sophomore Megan Brousseau's (Attleboro, MA/Attleboro) third-place finish of 4:41.72 in the 1,500-meter run was 1.95 seconds off a four-year-old school record, and classmate Cassandra Migani (Brooklyn, CT/Norwich Free Academy) placed sixth in the javelin competition and 10th in the discus. Harlow won the high jump in Friday's open competition with a 5' 5" leap, which is a provisional qualifying standard. During the second game, Moynagh carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning while pitching all seven innings, allowing only an unearned run, one single and four walks while striking out a career-high nine. Wheaton plated all the runs it would need in the first inning, as two Lyons came home during the frame on Hanewich's single and a trio of Saint Joseph's errors. In the third, DePolito lined a three-run homer over the right field fence, and her eighth career long ball moved her into a tie for seventh in program history. Kelleher added an RBI single in the fifth, Hanewich finished 2-for-3 with two runs, and freshman Brady Benton (Concord, NH/Concord) picked up her first collegiate hit.

Poulton improved to 4-0 with a complete-game effort while striking out six. Kelleher and Nowosacki each finished with a pair of hits and runs.

The Lyons plated single runs in each the first, fourth and sixth innings against visiting Fitchburg State for the win. Moynagh faced only four batters over the minimum while tying her career high with nine strikeouts and walking only one. Benton and Marini each went 2-for-3 to pace Wheaton's offense.

On Thursday, Wheaton split the final two games of its southern swing, downing Transylvania University, 5-4 in nine innings, before seeing its nine-game winning streak come to an end with a 2-1 loss against Nichols College. The streak was Wheaton's longest since a 13-game run in April 2003. In the Lyons' first game with Transylvania since 1999, Hildreth came up with two-run singles in each the fourth and sixth innings to stake the Blue and White to a 4-1 edge heading into the seventh before the Pioneers knotted the score. Hildreth went 2-for-3 with four RBI, DePolito chipped in a pair of hits, Kelleher scored three runs, and Moynagh picked up the win in relief, tossing 2.1 perfect innings.
