Weekly LyonField Hockey (1-2) Drops Pair of Non-Conference Games to Endicott and BowdoinThe Wheaton College field hockey team dropped a pair of non-conference games this week, as the Lyons suffered a hard-fought 2-1 loss to Endicott College on Tuesday at Clark Field and later fell to Bowdoin College, 7-1 on Sunday in Brunswick, Maine. Spoiling Wheaton's home opener on Tuesday, Endicott wasted little time picking up the game's first goal 5:13 into the opening half. In the second stanza, the Gulls posted another score past junior goalkeeper Emily Fiskio (Branford, CT/Branford) to give the visitors a 2-0 cushion. The Lyons eventually halved the Endicott advantage with 12:06 to play, as freshman Lindsay Raymond (East Lyme, CT/East Lyme) recorded the first goal of her collegiate career. Junior Elizabeth Rowland (Holliston, MA/Holliston) was credited with the assist. The Lyons controlled play down the stretch and had multiple scoring opportunities in the game's final minutes, but were unable to capitalize. Fiskio turned in her second straight double-figure save performance with 16 total. Endicott held a slim 23-21 edge in shots, while Wheaton had nine penalty corner chances to the Gulls' two. On Sunday, Bowdoin erupted for three goals in the first seven minutes of play and never looked back. Raymond scored the Blue and White's only goal of the day on an assist by Rowland in the 40th minute, but the game was well in hand for the Polar Bears by halftime. Bowdoin held a sizeable 5-0 advantage at the intermission. Raymond cut into the Bowdoin deficit four minutes into the second half, but it proved to be too little too late as the Polar Bears added two goals to complete the scoring. Fiskio and Mary Catherine Boll (Columbus, IN/Miss Porter's School) split halves and combined to record 13 saves. The Polar Bears outshot the Lyons, 22-6 with a 14-2 margin in penalty corners. Men's Soccer (4-1-0) 19-Game Unbeaten Streak Snapped, Posts 1-1 WeekThe Wheaton College men's soccer team, ranked third in the country and first in New England according to the National Soccer Coaches Association (NSCAA), posted a 1-1 week and in the process had the nation's second-longest current unbeaten streak of 19 games snapped over the weekend. Wheaton handed Bridgewater State College a 4-1 setback Wednesday in Bridgewater and then lost 2-1 to regionally-ranked Keene State College in its fifth straight road game Saturday in New Hampshire. At Bridgewater State, senior Andrew Hench (Marblehead, MA/Marblehead) set the tone early, as the visiting Lyons handed the Bears a three-goal loss in their home opener. Hench's first goal was set up by senior Matt Ristuccia (Newton, MA/Newton North), who picked up two assists on the day, and classmate Gabe Margolis (Brookline, MA/Beaver Country Day) in the 11th minute of the opening half. The score remained 1-0 the rest of the stanza, but in the second half the Lyons registered three unanswered goals to take a commanding 4-0 advantage. Hench picked up his second goal just over 14 minutes into the second half, which was also assisted by Ristuccia. Sophomore Cameron Habib (Norfolk, MA/Bridgton Academy) and freshman Brad Colley (Thornton, CO/Regis Jesuit) added goals of their own later in the half, while classmates Colin Igoe (Weston, MA/Weston) and Connor Erickson (Canton, MA/Canton) were credited with assists. Bridgewater's only goal came in the 84th minute, when the Bears capitalized on a penalty kick. The Lyon defense stymied the Bear attack all game, limiting Bridgewater to two shots and no corner kick opportunities. Sophomore goalkeeper Matt Pachniuk (Newtown, CT/Newtown) made the lone save in 59 minutes of play, while the final 31 minutes were picked up by sophomore David Croft (Cape Elizabeth, ME/Cape Elizabeth). The Blue and White finished with 23 shots and three corner kicks. At Keene State, the Lyons suffered their first loss of the season Saturday and first setback in 20 games. The Blue and White trailed 1-0 in only the third minute of play. The Owls then made it 2-0 in the 30th minute, knocking in a rebound off Pachniuk for what would eventually serve as the game-winning goal. After the intermission, Ristuccia scored his first goal of the season on an assist by sophomore Ariel Tatum (Cayman Islands, BWI/Holderness), as Wheaton began a late onslaught on the Owls' defense. It proved to be too little too late however, as Keene State managed to hold on despite allowing 14 second-half shots, including Ristuccia's equalizer attempt that ricocheted off the far left post in the closing seconds. Wheaton held an 18-3 margin in shots and a 5-4 edge in corner kicks. Habib Garners NEWMAC Player-of-the-Week LaurelsMen's soccer standout Cameron Habib (Norfolk, MA/Bridgton Academy) garnered the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference's (NEWMAC) first Player-of-the-Week selection of the 2004 season for the week ending on Sunday, September 5. Habib led the Lyons to three victories, including capturing the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA) Tournament championship. Habib posted game-winning goals in each of the two contests. Earning Offensive MVP honors, Habib tallied a goal in a 2-1 decision over Western New England College and then recorded an unassisted score in the Lyons' 1-0 double-overtime victory against the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth. Habib also started in Wheaton's 2-0 season-opening win at Salve Regina University. Women's Soccer (5-0-0) Blanks Pair of Nationally-Ranked Teams to Remain UnbeatenThe Wheaton College women's soccer team, ranked second in the country and first in New England according to the NSCAA, recorded a memorable week that featured three shutouts, two victories over other nationally-ranked programs and a win over a regionally-ranked squad. Playing in three straight road games, the Lyons blanked Endicott College, 2-0 on Tuesday night and over the weekend recorded a pair of 3-0 victories over 25th-ranked Denison University and third-ranked and two-time national champion Ohio Wesleyan University. Wheaton has been victorious in 24 of its last 25 games and is currently tied for third in program history for consecutive shutouts. Against Denison on Saturday and after 27 minutes of scoreless soccer, senior Beth Caromile (Warwick, RI/Pilgrim) took a cross from Brennan and knocked her shot past the keeper. The Lyons struck again one minute later, when Rabesa made the score 2-0 on a sliding right-footed strike. Sophomore Jordan Pouliot (Manchester, NH/Trinity) set up the play with a cross from the left side of the field. Wheaton carried its 2-0 advantage into the intermission, holding a slim 7-6 advantage in shots. Midway through the stanza, the Lyons ballooned their lead to 3-0. Rabesa directed her shot into the top right corner of the net, as Caromile fed Rabesa a through ball for the eventual breakaway. Kronenberg had five stops, as the Lyons outshot Denison, 17-11, with corner kicks even at two apiece. Men's Tennis (0-0) Captures Seventh Annual Grass Court Doubles Title at Hall of FameThe Wheaton College men's tennis team captured its first doubles team title at the 2004 Grass Court Tournament hosted by Salve Regina University at the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport, Rhode Island this weekend, as the Lyons totaled 16 points among the seven scoring squads. Wheaton entered the match ranked 17th in the Northeast according to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), while Skidmore was 13th. Versus Skidmore, the Lyons swept doubles play in the early going and later held on in singles action en route to the narrow win. The Lyons set the tone early, taking all three doubles points with two close matches. Kriwinsky and Weiss pulled out an 8-6 win in the top doubles position and McDermott and Jackson locked up another 8-6 victory at second doubles. In singles play, Kriwinsky made short work of her opponent at first singles, taking a decisive 6-1, 6-1 victory. Losses at second and sixth singles brought the overall match score to 4-2, but soon after, Jackson registered the fifth and decisive point with a 6-4, 6-2 win at fourth singles. Kriwinsky Selected NEWMAC Player of the WeekKriwinsky was selected NEWMAC Player of the Week for the week ending on Sunday, September 5. Kriwinsky was nearly flawless in Wheaton's opening two matches of the 2004 season, as the nation's 35th-ranked player led the Lyons to a 6-3 victory at Plymouth State University and a 9-0 sweep over Union College at home. Collecting four convincing victories in the top singles and doubles positions, Kriwinsky posted singles scores of 6-0, 6-1 and a doubles final of 8-1 versus Plymouth State. Wheaton's sophomore ace followed that performance with a clean 6-0, 6-0 and 8-0 singles and doubles sweep against Union.
