Weekly LyonField Hockey (7-8, 1-4) Earns First Conference Victory, Blanks WPI in 1-1 WeekThe Wheaton College field hockey team posted a 1-1 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) mark this week, as the Lyons suffered a 3-1 setback at Babson College on Tuesday and then steamrolled past WPI, 8-0 on Saturday in Worcester. At Babson, the Blue and White allowed three first-half goals and didn't recover. Wheaton gained some offensive momentum in the second half, firing its first four shots of the contest at the Babson goalie. Sophomore Elizabeth Rowland (Holliston, MA/Holliston) finally broke through on the third shot, scoring off a feed from first-year Shea Clarke (Bellingham, MA/Bellingham) to make it 3-1. The Beavers however stopped Wheaton's only other shot of the contest to hold on for the two-goal victory. Sophomore goalkeeper Emily Fiskio (Branford, CT/Branford) made a total of 14 saves in the first half, while first-year goalie Mary Catherine Boll (Columbus, IN/Miss Porter's School) stopped all five shots that she faced in the second stanza. At WPI, sophomore Oly Wirtz (Fitchburg, MA/Fitchburg) and freshman Irene Coleman (Portland, ME/Deering) tallied two goals apiece in leading the Lyons to its first conference victory of the season. Coleman scored the game's first goal, which proved to be the game winner, just 9:49 into the contest. Coleman later posted the game's final tally with 11:20 remaining in the second half. Wirtz triggered the contest's fourth and sixth goals, both in the second half. Wheaton scored its goals in clusters, tallying three in the opening half in a span of 12 minutes and two seconds and five goals in the second stanza in a stretch of 11 minutes and 28 seconds. Junior co-captain Laura Oswald (Pacific Grove, CA/Stevenson) registered a goal and an assist, while Clarke added a pair of assists. The Lyons outshot WPI, 27-3, as Fiskio went untested on the day.
Men's Soccer (11-3-0, 3-1-0) Posts Sixth Shutout of Season with 3-0 Triumph at ClarkThe Wheaton College men's soccer team dominated play Wednesday night in conference action, as the Lyons rolled to a 3-0 triumph at Clark University. Ranked 24th nationally and fourth in New England according to the National Soccer Coaches Association (NSCAA), the Lyons posted their sixth shutout and fifth straight victory of the season. At Clark, sophomore back James Greenslit (Framingham, MA/Rivers School) tallied his first two goals of the season to lead the way. The Lyons wasted no time picking up their first goal of the contest, as senior Andrew Hench (Marblehead, MA/Marblehead) skipped a Barry Finnerty (Milton, MA/Beaver Country Day) free kick over to Greenslit, who in turn knocked his shot past the Clark goalie at the 1:59 minute mark. Greenslit and Finnerty combined for Wheaton's second tally of the night in the 20th minute, when Greenslit used a header off a corner kick to give the visitors a 2-0 advantage. Finnerty's two assists on the game gave him 13 for the season, which tied the all-time single season mark set in the fall of 2000. In the second half, Wheaton piled on 15 shots while shutting down the Cougar offense, as the Lyons held Clark to zero shots with zero corner kick attempts in 90 minutes. Junior Matt Ristuccia (Newton, MA/Newton North) provided the Blue and White with extra insurance, delivering his sixth goal of the season at 75:18. Wheaton finished the contest with 25 shots. Thomas Garners NEWMAC Player-of-the-Week AccoladesMen's soccer standout George Thomas (Canton, MA/Canton) became the third Wheaton player to garner NEWMAC Player-of-the-Week accolades this season, this time for the week ending on Sunday, October 12. A junior midfielder, Thomas helped Wheaton to a 2-0 week. Early in the week, he led the Blue and White to a 2-1 non-conference victory against Wesleyan University. Thomas also posted the game-winning goal, his third of the season, with less than 10 minutes remaining to lift the Lyons to a 2-1 win over NEWMAC rival Babson College. Women's Soccer (15-1-0, 6-0-0) Remains Perfect in League with Wins over Babson & WPIThe Wheaton College women's soccer team remained perfect in the NEWMAC with a pair of shutout victories on the week, including home victories versus Babson College and WPI. The Lyons posted their 12th and 13th shutouts of the season with a 3-0 win against Babson on Tuesday and an 8-0 triumph over WPI on Saturday at Mirrione Stadium. Ranked fourth nationally and first in New England according to the NSCAA, Wheaton extended its season winning streak to 11 games and overall conference winning streak to 34 games. Against WPI, while only scoring two goals, Wheaton dominated the first half with a 15-2 shot difference. Broomhead did not have to make a save in 65 minutes of play. Pouliot opened the scoring in the seventh minute, with the assist coming from senior Christy McHugh (Salem, MA/Bishop Fenwick). Wheaton's second goal took place with a little under 24 minutes remaining in the half on a shot from freshman Maggie Falkenreck (Seattle, WA/Bishop Blanchet). McHugh earned the assist on the play. The second stanza proved to be a tale of two halves for the Lyons, as they exploded for six goals, including four within a span of six minutes. Prihoda began the scoring parade just 2:16 into the half and McHugh added two consecutive goals in the 53rd and 63rd minutes. Duffy, Pouliot and junior Carolyn Wills (Salt Lake City, UT/East) added Wheaton's final three goals. Sophomore goalie Emily Lipsky (Whitestone, NY/Sacred Heart Academy) made two saves in the final 25 minutes. Prihoda's Five-Goal Week Leads to NEWMAC SelectionPrihoda totaled five goals in two games, becoming the third Wheaton player this season and second in as many weeks to be named NEWMAC Player of the Week. Her award was given for the week ending on Sunday, October 12. Prihoda helped lead to the Lyons to a pair of conference victories. At Clark University, she accounted for all three Wheaton goals and tallied her first hat-trick of the season in a 3-0 victory. At Springfield, Prihoda added two more scores in a 6-1 triumph over the Pride. Women's Tennis (9-3, 6-2) at New England Women's Intercollegiate Tennis TournamentThe Wheaton College women's tennis competed at the New England Women's Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament this weekend at Amherst College. Final team results have yet to be posted, as the Lyons totaled 7.5 points. Wheaton sent its seven regular season starters to Amherst. Freshman Ashley Kriwinsky (Munson, OH/Hawken) continued her monumental season with an impressive semifinal round finish at the top singles flight. Seeded third while earning a bye in the opening round, Kriwinsky posted a 7-6, 7-5 win over Middlebury College and a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Bowdoin College, before falling to the eventual champion from Williams College in a three-set match 7-5, 1-6, 5-7. Senior Emily Dana (Hamilton, MA/Governor Dummer Academy) was Wheaton's only other singles player to advance, as she swept Babson College 6-0, 6-0 and defeated Connecticut College 7-6, 6-4, before being forced to accept a walkover due to a knee injury. In doubles play, freshmen Jamie Weiss (Chicago, IL/Francis W. Parker) and Darby McDermott (Briarcliff, NY/Hackley School) won 8-4 over Mount Holyoke College before suffering an 8-0 setback to Middlebury College in the second flight. At third doubles, Dana and junior Caitlin Amaral (Glocester, RI/Ponaganset) edged Babson College 9-7 in the opening round and then dropped an 8-0 decision to Tufts University. Kriwinsky Continues to Amass Weekly Conference Honors with Third SelectionKriwinsky continued to accumulate weekly conference honors as a freshman, as she was selected NEWMAC Player of the Week for the third time of the season, this time for the week ending on Sunday, October 12. Kriwinsky posted a perfect 4-0 record in singles and doubles play, leading the Lyons to a 1-1 mark, including a 7-2 win over Springfield College. Helping Wheaton finish its NEWMAC regular season slate with an impressive 6-2 record, she registered a 6-1, 6-1 win in the top singles position over her Springfield counterpart in addition to capturing an 8-3 victory at first doubles. At Bowdoin College, Kriwinsky accounted for Wheaton's lone two points with a 6-2, 6-4 win at first singles and an 8-6 victory in the top doubles position. Women's Volleyball (13-13, 3-3) Records Third Straight NEWMAC Win, Sweeps WPIThe Wheaton College women's volleyball team recorded its third straight conference victory in a 1-1 week, as the Lyons swept WPI, 3-0 (30-25, 30-14, 30-20) on Tuesday before dropping a three-game set to Tufts University, 3-0 (18-30, 24-30, 34-36) in a non-conference match on Thursday. Both matches were played at Emerson Gymnasium. Against Tufts, the Jumbos rolled to a 30-18 victory in game one. The Lyons came out a bit stronger in game two but still were unable to take a game off their opponents, as Tufts prevailed 30-24. Wheaton had an early lead in the third game but the Jumbos regained control and soon found themselves with a comfortable 23-15 advantage. At that point, the Lyons stormed back for seven unanswered points to bring the match to 23-22. Wheaton regained the lead late in the match, taking a 31-30 edge, but could not close it out as Tufts pulled out a 36-34 victory. Vengroff was the offensive leader, recording 14 kills, while Vertuca accounted for 38 of the team's 43 assists and tallied a team-high 18 digs. Senior Anna Kratky (St. Louis, MO/Villa Duchesne) and Reagh contributed 15 and 13 digs, respectively, while senior captain Bree Bessette (Charlestown, RI/ The Prout School) added a team-best six blocks.
Men's Cross Country Finishes Fourth at Twin Brook Invitational II, Women Place SixthThe Wheaton College men's and women's cross country teams competed at the Twin Brook Invitational II Saturday at the Twin Brook Recreation Center in Cumberland, Maine. The men placed fourth in the 12-team field with 130 points. On the women's side, the Lyons finished sixth overall among 13 competing teams with 168 points. Junior Stan Pyle (S. Portland, ME/S. Portland) was impressive for the men, as he captured his second individual title of the season. Placing first among 156 runners, Pyle covered the 8,000-meter course in 26:22, 40 seconds faster than the next closest competitor. Senior Terry Panetta (Hicksville, NY/St. Anthony's) placed ninth in 27:20, while sophomore Eric Richardson (East Walpole, MA/Bishop Feehan) was 40th in 28:19 and junior Joe Chadwick (Shelburne Falls, MA/Mohawk Trail Regional) in 51st in 28:40. The women had two runners finish among the top 17 competitors, including freshman Jonatta Moore (Staten Island, NY/Curtis) and sophomore Kendra Leith (Holden, MA/Wachusett Regional). Moore placed 13th overall in 23:36, while Leith wasn't far behind in 17th place at 23:42. Rounding out Wheaton's top runners was sophomore Christina Langevin (Wilbraham, MA/Minnechaug Regional) in 36th in 24:49 and junior Emily Doenges (Milford, CT/St. Joseph) in 44th with a time of 25:09.
