Men's Basketball (3-0) Remains Unbeaten with 89-65 Triumph over Brandeis

The Wheaton College men's basketball team saw its record improve to a perfect 3-0 overall Tuesday night, as the Lyons posted an 89-65 non-conference triumph over Brandeis University in their 2002-03 home opener at Emerson Gymnasium.

With the exception of two early ties and a 4-2 deficit at the 17:58 minute mark, Wheaton led throughout the game's entirety. The Lyons and Judges were knotted at eight points apiece five minutes into the contest, when Wheaton went on a 11-2 run to take a 19-10 advantage with 12:08 to play. The visitors got as close as four points at 11:09, but over the next four minutes the Lyons posted 14 unanswered points to capture a commanding 33-15 advantage. Sophomores Josean Vega (Pawtucket, RI/St. Raphael's) and Mike Stanton (Lynnfield, MA/Brewster Academy) accounted for 12 of those points in that spurt. Wheaton pushed its lead out to as many as 20 points with 3:33 to go, but Brandeis closed the gap to 41-28 with under three minutes to go. The Lyons entered the half with a 44-32 lead.

In the second stanza, the Judges kept things close for the first half of the frame, trailing 66-57 with 9:16 remaining. The Lyons then held Brandeis scoreless over a four-minute span and in the process reeled off 13 unanswered points to put the game away for good. Junior forward Scott Mahan (Bridgewater, MA/Cardinal Spellman) posted eight points in that run, including a pair of field goals and four free throws. Wheaton shot 57.1% (16-28 FG) with 13 steals in the second half, while holding Brandeis to a 39.4% (13-33 FG) clip and forcing 14 Judge turnovers. For the game, the Lyons shot 52.4% (33-63 FG) from the field, including 52.6% (10-19 3-pt FG) from behind the arc.

Four Wheaton players posted double-figure scoring, led by Mahan's game-high tying 17 points (6-9 FG, 5-6 FT), seven rebounds, three steals and three assists in 25 minutes. Sophomore guard Marco Joubert (Haverhill, MA/Governor Dummer Academy) turned in a solid performance, tallying 16 points (6-8 FG, 3-3 3-pt FG) and a team-high tying four assists. Vega, senior captain Jarett Lewis (Detroit, MI/South Kent School) and junior Frankie Whall (Roslindale, MA/Cheshire Academy) had 11 points apiece to round out the scoring for the victors. Whall added a game-best eight boards, while Lewis had a game-high four steals.

Women's Basketball (1-2) Suffers Second Loss of Season with 61-41 Final at Curry

The Wheaton College women's basketball team suffered its second loss of the season Tuesday night, as the Lyons fell to Curry College, 61-41 in a non-conference contest. Trailing 36-27 at the half, Wheaton was held to three field goals and 14 points in the second stanza. The Lyons turned the ball over 23 times opposed to 10 by Curry and in the process were outrebounded and outshot by the Colonels.

Sophomore guard Kate Williams (Portland, OR/Catlin Gabel) led Wheaton with 11 points (3-5 3-pt FG) and six rebounds, while junior Amanda Dow-Allen (Deerfield, MA/Stoneleigh-Burnham) added eight points in the loss.
