Cavanaugh Voted NEWMAC Men's Soccer Player of the Year, Five Wheaton Players Named to All-Conference Teams

Wheaton College senior forward Shaun Cavanaugh (Newtown, CT/Newtown) was named NEWMAC Player of the Year for the second consecutive season by the league's coaches announced last Tuesday at WPI. This marked the fifth straight year in the five-year history of the conference that a Wheaton player has been awarded NEWMAC Player-of-the-Year laurels.

Joining Cavanaugh on the NEWMAC All-Conference first team are classmates Dan Antoniuk (Philadelphia, PA/Central) and Hans Ingram (St. Maarten, NA/Northfield Mount Hermon). Senior David Wurm (Dunstable, MA/Groton-Dunstable) and junior John Chronis (Danvers, MA/Beaver Country Day) were named to the second team.

Cavanaugh, who was selected as an All-America his junior year, has been a fixture in the Wheaton midfield over his four-year career. Starting in 19 games this season, he is among the conference leaders in scoring with nine goals, four assists and 22 points. In 81 career starts, Cavanaugh climbed the school charts in every offensive statistical category, ranking in the top five in goals, assists and total points. He currently is tied for second in goals with 35, third in points with 92 and fifth in assists with 22.

Named NEWMAC Player of the Year in 2000, Antoniuk led the conference in scoring with 12 goals, 11 assists and 35 points while adding four game-winning goals. Also an All-America selection in 2000, Antoniuk is the program's record holder in every career and single-season offensive category. Posting an impressive 54 goals, 36 assists and 144 points in his four-year career, he recorded single-season record marks in 2000 with 18 goals, 13 assists and 49 points. Ingram, who started in all 20 games from the midfield position, totaled two goals and five assists for the Lyons and finished his career with 43 points (11 goals, 21 assists).

Another member of the Wheaton record book is Wurm, who finished his four-year career with 29 goals, 16 assists and 74 points. In 19 games this season, Wurm finished second in the conference and second on the team in scoring with 10 goals, five assists and 25 points. He also added three game-winning goals for the Lyons. Starting in all 20 games from his back position, Chronis' nine assists were good enough for second in the league.

Hosting the NEWMAC Tournament two weekend's ago, the Lyons fell to eventual champion Babson College in the semifinal round. Choosing not to declare for an Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Tournament bid, Wheaton did not take part in a post-season appearance for the first time in 11 seasons. As the fifth-ranked team in New England, the Lyons averaged 2.87 goals per game while holding the opposition to a 1.34 goal per game mark, which placed them second and fourth, respectively in the conference.

Women's Soccer (22-1-0, 9-0-0) Captures First New England Championship, Set to Host William Smith College in 2002 NCAA Division III National Tournament

The Wheaton College women's soccer team captured its first NCAA Division III New England Championship over the weekend and is now set to host William Smith College in the national quarterfinal round this Saturday, November 23 at 12:00 p.m. Extending its winning steak to 19 games on the season, Wheaton defeated Bridgewater State, 1-0 in Saturday's semifinal, giving the Lyons their 44th victory in their last 45 games on Elms Field. On Sunday, Wheaton captured the regional title by defeating Keene State, 3-1 at Brockton High School's Marciano Stadium. In last week's poll, the Lyons were ranked first in the region and fourth in the country according to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA).

Versus Bridgewater State, junior forward Tracy Prihoda (Needham, MA/Needham) posted the game-winning goal in the 60th minute on a rain-soaked Elms Field. Through a scoreless first half with multiple opportunities for both teams, Wheaton goalie Jessica Broomhead (Barrington, RI/Barrington) and the Bridgewater keeper posted strong performances in goal. The Lyons had three chances through the first twenty minutes, but were unable to put the ball into the back of the net. Prihoda had a couple of opportunities in the early going, including a shot following a scramble that was cleared by the Bear defense five minutes into the game.

In the second stanza, Wheaton's offense came out in a flurry. Both Prihoda and sophomore Christy Schneider (Jonesboro, GA/Jonesboro) had open looks in the first ten minutes, but the Bear goalie made a pair of saves to preserve the shutout. However, in the 60th minute, the Lyons broke the stalemate. Prihoda's corner kick was received on the far post from Schneider, who then proceeded to kick the ball back across the goal to Prihoda. Prihoda dribbled the ball into the goal box area and managed to push her shot past the Bridgewater keeper from a near impossible angle. From that point on, the Wheaton defense held its own and prevented the Bears from any serious scoring threats, as the Lyons posted their 13th shutout of the season. Broomhead finished with four stops in the victory, as Wheaton outshot the Bears, 21-7 with an 8-2 advantage in corner kicks.

On Sunday against Keene State, the game was moved to a neutral site due to unplayable field conditions at Wheaton's Elms Field. In the opening half, Keene State attacked early and often, but the Owls were unable to convert on any opportunities. Midway through the stanza, Wheaton matched Keene State‚s intensity as the Lyons had two open looks from sophomore Erin Brennan (Mesa, AZ/Xavier Prep) and junior Christy McHugh (Salem, MA/Bishop Fenwick), but the pair were unable to capitalize. In the 19th minute, Wheaton opened the scoring when Prihoda posted her team-leading 30th goal of the season. Prihoda trapped the ball outside the 18-yard line, beat two Owl defenders to her left and finished by striking a beautifully-placed left-footed shot to the bottom right corner of the net.

Eleven minutes later, the Lyons tacked on their second goal of the contest, thanks to a perfectly-placed shot from McHugh. From 20 yards out on the right side of the field, McHugh bent her shot over the outstretched reach of the Keene goalie and into the upper left netting for the 2-0 advantage. The Owls had an opportunity to close the gap in the final minutes of the half, but Broomhead managed to punch the ball over the crossbar to preserve the 2-0 lead.

Following the intermission, the Lyons had a great opportunity to extend their advantage to three goals on Brennan's left-footed shot, but the keeper was there to make the diving stop. Keene State's offense responded in the 60th minute, as the Owls cut the deficit in half. The Lyons didn't waste anytime answering the call, as junior Sheila Lacambra (Walnut Creek, CA/Northgate) pushed the Wheaton lead back to two goals. Following a Brennan shot, Prihoda used a soft header to find Lacambra, who then drilled her shot over the goalie's reach for the 3-1 lead. The Lyons' defense then maintained their solid play, keeping the Owls' attack in tact while running out the clock to capture the win. Broomhead was credited with three saves, as the Lyons outshot the Owls, 14-10, with Keene holding a 6-1 edge in corner kicks.
