Field Hockey (6-9, 2-3) Celebrates 100-Year Anniversary During Homecoming Weekend

The Wheaton College field hockey team celebrated its 100-year anniversary over Homecoming weekend in grand fashion, as the Lyons posted a school-record eight goals en route to an 8-0 triumph over WPI in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) contest. Earlier in the week, Wheaton suffered a 2-0 loss to Babson and 2-1 overtime defeat against Roanoke (VA).

On Tuesday, Babson used a pair of goals, one in each half, to drop Wheaton in a league contest at Clark Field. The Beavers wasted no time gaining the offensive advantage, as Babson registered its first goal of the contest a minute and a half into the game. Despite outshooting the Lyons, 10-3 throughout the rest of the half, Babson could not accumulate any more offense due to the strong play of Wheaton first-year goaltender Emily Fiskio (Branford, CT/Branford). Fiskio totaled eight saves in the half, including a number of stops from point blank range. She was unable to fend off the Beavers in the second stanza, as Babson struck again 12 minutes into the half. Fiskio finished the game with 11 saves on the day, as the Beavers held a 14-5 advantage on penalty corners.

In an uncharacteristic out of region contest on Thursday, the Lyons suffered a hard-fought overtime loss at home to Roanoke. Wheaton scored the game's first goal at 6:06 of the first stanza, when senior co-captain Katherine Sciolto (Brooklyn, NY/Poly Prep CDS) rifled a shot from the top of the circle that was redirected into the cage by sophomore Lynn Holmgren (East Sandwich, MA/Sandwich) for the 1-0 Lyon advantage. After two consecutive unsuccessful penalty corners, the Maroons capitalized on their third straight attempt at 19:42 of the second half to knot the game at one goal apiece. In the extra session, Wheaton≠s fourth of the season and Roanoke's seventh, both teams had ample scoring opportunities, but it was the Maroons that posted the game-winning goal with 4:59 remaining in the first overtime. Roanoke outshot Wheaton, 23-5 and had an 11-2 advantage in penalty corners.
Versus WPI, the crowd witnessed the honoring of past Wheaton field hockey alumnae as the school celebrated the 100th anniversary of athletics at Wheaton. In 1902, Constance Applebee introduced field hockey to the school and in turn a club team was formed. In 1915, the Lyons participated in its first intercollegiate contest against Sargent College. On Saturday, the Lyons wasted no time cracking the scoreboard, as junior forward Nicole Marchetto (Amherst, MA/Amherst) posted a goal 56 seconds into the contest. Just 18 seconds later off a penalty corner, Wheaton extended its lead to 2-0, thanks to sophomore Laura Oswald (Pacific Grove, CA/Stevenson).

Rounding out the scoring for Wheaton was senior Lauren Proshan (Blandford, MA/The MacDuffie School), sophomores Melissa Busfield (Gloucester, MA/Gloucester) and Lynn Holmgren (East Sandwich, MA/Sandwich) and first-year Elizabeth Rowland (Holliston, MA/Holliston). Busfield and Rowland each had two goals apiece, while Fiskio and senior Amy Haller (Pittsburgh, PA/Western Reserve Academy) combined in net for the shutout, the Blue and White's fifth of the season. The Lyons outshot the Engineers, 35-0 and held a 16-0 advantage in penalty corners.

Twenty minutes later, Clark cut the deficit in half, but it proved to be too little too late as sophomore forward Olivier Brocard (Wellesley, MA/Wellesley) added an insurance goal in the 70th minute for the Lyons. Wheaton outshot Clark, 16-4 and had a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Against Brandeis, senior Jason Percy (Plymouth, MA/Plymouth) took a feed from junior Andrew Hench (Marblehead, MA/Marblehead) late in the second overtime to complete the come-from-behind double overtime victory. In the first half, Wheaton fell behind 2-0 on a pair of Brandeis goals. The second stanza however belonged to the home team, as Wheaton's rally began when Mancini was taken down in the penalty box in the 69th minute. Senior Shaun Cavanaugh (Newtown, CT/Newtown) buried the ensuing penalty kick into the upper left netting to cut the Lyon deficit in half.
