Weekly Lyon

Field Hockey (5-7, 1-2) Posts 1-2 Week, Upsets Nationally-Ranked Springfield

The Wheaton College field hockey team dropped a pair of games during the week, including a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) contest against Clark, but the Lyons bounced back on Saturday afternoon to upset nationally-ranked Springfield, 2-1 in double overtime. Wheaton also fell to Gordon, 3-0 in a non-league game Thursday at Clark Field.

At Clark, the Cougars picked up the eventual game-winning goal less than two minutes into the contest, giving the hosts a 1-0 lead that would not be relinquished. In the second stanza, Clark added some quick insurance with its second tally that also transpired in the first two minutes of play. Wheaton was outshot, 16-4 in the half and 24-6 in the game. The Cougars also held a 10-4 advantage in penalty corners. Despite seeing plenty of action on her side of the field, Wheaton first-year goalkeeper Emily Fiskio (Branford, CT/Branford) kept the Lyons close with an impressive 19 saves.

Returning home against Gordon, Wheaton gave up a late first-half goal and never recovered, as the Lyons were shut out by the Fighting Scots. Holding a 7-3 advantage in shots during the first half, Gordon was unable to capitalize until the 2:25 minute mark. The Fighting Scots added their second goal of the contest with 19:26 remaining in the second stanza and rounded out the scoring with 13:55 to play. Fiskio turned away nine shots on goal for the Lyons, as Gordon outshot Wheaton, 16-8. The Blue and White held a 10-9 edge in penalty corners.

On Saturday, sophomore Lynn Holmgren's (East Sandwich, MA/Sandwich) unassisted goal with 2:15 remaining in the second overtime lifted Wheaton to the upset victory over 18th-ranked Springfield. After a scoreless first half, the Lyons opened the scoring at the 12:33 minute mark of the second stanza when junior midfielder Nicole Marchetto (Amherst, MA/Amherst) scored her first goal of the season, giving Wheaton the 1-0 lead. Sophomore Diane Trifilo (Baldwinville, MA/Narragansett Regional) added the assist on the play. Four minutes later, Springfield tied the game at a goal apiece.

Neither team could muster any additional scoring, as the Lyons and Pride headed to overtime. After a scoreless first overtime and no scoring through much of the second extra session, the two teams seemed headed for a penalty shootout for the second consecutive year. Holmgren however answered the call, posting her first goal of the season for the 2-1 victory. Senior Katherine Sciolto (Brooklyn, NY/Poly Prep CDS) was credited with the assist. Fiskio made 11 saves, as Wheaton was outshot, 22-13.

Men's Soccer (11-2-0, 3-0-0) Extends Winning Streak, Defeats Top-Ranked Bowdoin

The Wheaton College men's soccer team had an impressive week, highlighted by a weekend that saw the Lyons knock off conference rival Babson, 3-0 in Wellesley on Saturday, followed by a 4-3 come-from-behind victory over top-ranked Bowdoin on Sunday. Earlier in the week, Wheaton had no difficulty with Eastern Connecticut State, as the Lyons dismantled the Warriors, 8-1 Tuesday at Keefe Field. Running its home winning streak to 22 games, Wheaton was ranked 14th in the country in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) poll.

Versus Eastern Connecticut, the Blue and White used eight different goal scorers and two four-goal halves to put the Warriors away early. Wheaton exploded for four goals in a span of just under 13 minutes, as junior John Chronis (Danvers, MA/Beaver Country Day) started the scoring parade with a left-footed shot past the opposing keeper in the 17th minute. Three minutes later, Chronis fed junior Matt Mancini (Westford, MA/ Westford Academy) to expand the lead to 2-0. Senior Shaun Cavanaugh (Newtown, CT/Newtown) scored on a corner kick and classmate Dan Antoniuk (Philadelphia, PA/Central) converted a free kick opportunity to extend the score to 4-0 in the 30th minute. The Warriors got their only score late in the opening half.

In the second stanza, seniors Jason Percy (Plymouth, MA/Plymouth South) and Justin Spiro (Little Silver, NJ/Red Bank) each notched goals for the Lyons. With a 6-1 lead, junior Olivier Brocard (Wellesley, MA/Wellesley) scored in the 76th minute, followed by a Matt Ristuccia (Newton, MA/Newton North) goal with under 10 minutes to play. Senior goalie Mike Henninger (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury) recorded a pair of saves for the Lyons. Wheaton outshot the Warriors, 32-6.

At Babson, three different seniors scored goals to lead visiting Wheaton past the Beavers. The Lyons controlled play throughout the majority of the first half, outshooting Babson by a count of 6-1, however the Beaver goalie made three of his five saves in the opening stanza to keep the game scoreless. Wheaton wasted little time getting on the board in the second half, as senior David Wurm (Dunstable, MA/Groton-Dunstable) gathered a cross from Chronis at 49:20. The Lyons added another goal less than five minutes later, when Percy headed a perfect crossing pass from Antoniuk into the right side of the net for a 2-0 advantage. Antoniuk rounded out the Lyons scoring on a breakaway goal with only 1:57 left in regulation, sealing the victory for Wheaton. First-year goalkeeper Max Hellman (Oklahoma City, OK/Casady) made three saves in net to earn the shutout. The Lyons held a 19-12 advantage in shots and 9-5 edge in corner kick attempts.

In Sunday's thrilling victory over seventh-ranked Bowdoin, Wheaton exploded for three second-half goals over a span of eight minutes, as the Lyons, ranked second in New England, overcame a two-goal deficit to knock off the top-ranked Polar Bears, 4-3 in a non-league game. A costly turnover by the Lyons gave visiting Bowdoin its first legitimate offensive chance, as the Polar Bears took a 1-0 edge in the 15th minute. Three minutes later, Wheaton got caught in its back side of the field only to allow an own goal to give the Polar Bears a 2-0 advantage. Wheaton and Bowdoin played nip-and-tuck until the closing minutes of the first stanza, when the Lyons managed a few scoring opportunities of their own. Cavanaugh redirected a Hans Ingram (St. Maarten, NA/Northfield Mount Hermon) pass, using a soft header to place his goal over the outstretched reach of the Polar Bear goalie.

In the second half, Bowdoin extended their margin to two goals in the 54th minute. Trailing 3-1 with 18 minutes to play and refusing to quit, Wheaton's rally began with Mancini, who took a through ball on the right side of the goal box from sophomore Gabe Margolis (Brookline, MA/Beaver Country Day) and placed his shot into the upper right netting. At 79:07, Margolis picked up the equalizer following a Barry Finnerty (Milton, MA/Beaver Country Day) cross and Bowdoin deflection. Margolis one-timed the rebound beautifully and struck from 25 yards out. Two minutes later, the Lyons struck again, as Antoniuk tallied the game-winning goal off a pass from Finnerty. On the ensuing one on one opportunity with the goalie, Antoniuk made a quick move from left to right and tucked his shot into the bottom right of the netting, clinching the dramatic victory.

Finnerty Selected as NEWMAC Player of the Week

Wheaton College men's soccer standout Finnerty was selected NEWMAC Player of the Week for the weekend ending on Sunday, October 6. A sophomore back for the Lyons and 2001 NEWMAC Rookie of the Year, Finnerty helped lead Wheaton to a pair of victories on the week. Brennan added the eventual game-winning goal in the 14th minute off a pass from Miller to give the Lyons the early 2-0 advantage. Springfield received a chance to climb right back into the game when the Pride were awarded a penalty kick in the 26th minute. However, the attempt was wide right as the game remained 2-0. Sophomore Erin Duffy (East Longmeadow, MA/East Longmeadow) added the third Lyon goal when the Blue and White were awarded a penalty kick of their own in the 35th minute.

Prihoda added to her conference-leading goal and point total with her second tally of the contest less than eight minutes into the second stanza. Duffy provided the assist on the play. McHugh extended the lead to 5-0 in the 57th minute on an unassisted goal.
