Weekly LyonField Hockey (4-5) Falls to Wesleyan in Non-Conference Road ContestThe Wheaton College field hockey team managed to even up Wesleyan at 2-2 in the early minutes of the second half, but the Lyons allowed two additional goals down the stretch in dropping a 4-2 decision in a non-conference contest Tuesday afternoon in Middletown. The Cardinals jumped out to a 2-0 advantage midway through the opening half, tallying goals at 22:04 and 20:15, respectively. The Lyons halved Wesleyan's lead with nine minutes remaining in regulation as first-year Elizabeth Rowland (Holliston, MA/Holliston) posted her first career goal. Senior Melanie Kilsey (Lincoln, RI/Lincoln) picked up her first assist of the season on the play. Trailing 2-1 entering the second stanza, Rowland didn't waste any time with her second tally of the contest, knotting the game at two goals apiece with just under 33 minutes to play. That's all the scoring Wheaton would see, as the Cardinals tacked on two additional goals in the final 28 minutes of play. In 63 minutes of action, first-year goalkeeper Emily Fiskio (Branford, CT/Branford) registered 11 saves while allowing three goals. Senior goalie Amy Haller (Pittsburgh, PA/Western Reserve Academy) gave up a goal in seven second-half minutes for the Lyons. The Cardinals outshot Wheaton, 17-8 and held a 22-5 advantage in penalty corners. Men's Soccer (8-2-0, 2-0-0) Returns to National Ranking, Lyons Unbeaten in 23 StraightThe Wheaton College men's soccer team got back into the national rankings with a placement of 22nd overall according to the latest National Soccer Association of America (NSCAA) poll. In a 2-0 week, the Lyons solidified their ranking by cruising past Rivier, 6-1 on Wednesday followed by a 1-0 victory over Coast Guard in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play Saturday at Keefe Field. Wheaton ran its home unbeaten streak to 23 games. The Lyons reeled off six unanswered goals en route to a commanding 6-1 non-conference victory at Rivier Wednesday night. Senior forward David Wurm (Dunstable, MA/Groton-Dunstable) spearheaded the Wheaton attack by posting his first career hat-trick within a six-minute span of the opening half. Sophomore Barry Finnerty (Milton, MA/Beaver Country Day), who registered a career-high three assists on the night, accounted for two assists on Wurm's goals. Senior Jason Percy (Plymouth, MA/Plymouth South) extended the visitor lead to 4-0 at the 32:42 minute mark, delivering a shot from classmate Shaun Cavanaugh (Newtown, CT/Newtown). In the second half, senior Dan Antoniuk (Philadelphia, PA/Central) received a through ball from Finnerty to balloon the advantage to five goals. Senior Jason Colley (Thornton, CO/Regis Jesuit) rounded out the scoring in the 57th minute, as junior John Chronis (Danvers, MA/Beaver Country Day) earned the assist on the play. Seeing his first action of the season, senior goalkeeper Mike Henninger (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury), who returned from an injury, picked up the victory for the Lyons. Wheaton outshot Rivier by an aggregate 55-2 margin. On Saturday, Antoniuk, who is Wheaton's all-time leading scorer in every offensive statistical category with 50 goals and 31 assists for 131 points, tallied the contest's lone goal early in the second half to give Wheaton a 1-0 victory over Coast Guard. The Lyons extended their home winning streak to 20 games and have now won 16 straight conference games. After battling to a scoreless tie in the first 45 minutes of play, the Lyons capitalized early in the second frame. Finnerty launched a deep ball towards the net that Antoniuk was able to punch past the Bear goalkeeper. The goal was Antoniuk's team- leading eighth of the season. The narrow margin almost haunted the Lyons, as Coast Guard was presented with a scoring chance with 16 minutes to play. Antoniuk was called for a handball in the box, setting up the Bears with a penalty kick. On the ensuing kick, the Coast Guard player pushed his shot high and wide of the net. Starting his fourth game of the season, freshman Max Hellman (Oklahoma City, OK/Casady) notched a pair of important saves for Wheaton. The Lyons outshot the Bears, 26-5. Women's Soccer (10-1-0, 2-0-0) Runs NEWMAC Winning Streak to 18 Games, Prihoda Shatters Wheaton All-Time Career Goals RecordThe Wheaton College women's soccer team extended its winning streak to seven games with a pair of victories over Amherst and Coast Guard. Ranked fifth nationally and first in New England, the Lyons avenged their only loss from last year, cruising past Amherst, 5-1 in a rematch of the 2001 NCAA Division III New England Regional Tournament semifinal round game. On Saturday, the Blue and White posted their 18th straight conference victory (including tournament games) with a convincing 5-0 decision at Coast Guard. Amherst was able to narrow the lead to one goal in the 26th minute, but the Blue and White regained the momentum just five minutes later, when Prihoda netted her second hat-trick of the season. Receiving a crossing pass from first-year Kate Miller (Williamstown, MA/Mount Greylock) at the far right side of the penalty box, Prihoda curled her shot just inside the left post for the third Wheaton goal. The Lyons added a fourth goal less than three minutes later, thanks to Caromile's rifling shot into the left side of the net. Freshman Katie Hall (Longmont, CO/Niwot) earned the assist on the play. Five minutes into the second stanza, the Lyons tacked on their fifth and final goal when sophomore Erin Brennan (Mesa, AZ/Xavier College Prep) received a corner kick from junior Debbie Case (Harvard, MA/Broomfield) and headed it in the net for a commanding 5-1 advantage. Junior Jessica Broomhead (Barrington, RI/Barrington) stopped four shots on the afternoon for the Lyons. At Coast Guard, Prihoda tallied three goals for the ninth time in her career, but none more important than her hat-trick on Saturday, as she broke Christina Mirrione's (North Easton, MA/Oliver Ames) '99 record for goals in a career. Prihoda wasted no time breaking the record, as she scored the second Wheaton goal at the 11:54 minute mark, which tied the mark with 55 career goals. Sophomore Joslyn Vendola (Kittery Point, ME/St. Thomas Aquinas [NH]) picked up her first assist of the season on the play. Exactly 2:15 later, sophomore Carolyn Wills (Salt Lake City, UT/East) found Prihoda for the record- breaking 56th goal. Prihoda wasn't finished, as she found the back of the net in the 22nd minute. Overshadowed by the record-breaking day was the Wheaton offense. The Lyons scored all five goals in the first 22 minutes of play. Brennan posted the first Lyon goal in the fourth minute off a Miller assist. After two Prihoda goals, Miller added a tally of her own, this time taking a pass from Prihoda in the 17th minute, for the 4-0 Wheaton advantage. Miller capped a four-point day (1 goal, 2 assists) by feeding Prihoda on the final goal of the afternoon. Broomhead and first-year Emily Lipsky (Whitestone, NY/Sacred Heart Academy) combined in net for the Wheaton shutout. Broomhead saved three shots in 65 minutes, while Lipsky registered two saves in the remaining 25 minutes.
