Weekly Lyon

Field Hockey (2-2) Edges Endicott, Falls to Nationally-Ranked Bowdoin

For the second consecutive week, the Wheaton College field hockey team went 1-1 in non-conference action. The Lyons posted a thrilling 1-0 double-overtime home victory over Endicott on Tuesday and then suffered a 4-0 defeat at nationally-ranked Bowdoin Sunday afternoon.

Senior Katherine Sciolto's (Brooklyn, NY/Poly Prep CDS) unassisted goal ended 90 minutes of scoreless field hockey Tuesday, leading Wheaton to its second win on the young season. Despite outshooting Endicott, 29-4, Wheaton was unable to capitalize on any of its scoring opportunities throughout the game. Taking advantage of the Blue and White's inability to finish, Endicott had a golden opportunity to take the lead with a minute to go in the first half.

The Gulls placed a shot in the back of the cage for what appeared to be a 1-0 lead, however the apparent goal was disallowed since the ball did not come to a complete stop following the penalty corner. In the second stanza, Wheaton continued to attack on offense, registering 10 shots on the Endicott goalie, which was in addition to the 10 shots in the overtime sessions prior to Sciolto's game-winner. Wheaton freshman goalkeeper Emily Fiskio (Branford, CT/Branford) registered her second shutout of the season with three saves.

The Wheaton offense struggled against Bowdoin, as the Lyons only managed two shots on the afternoon. The Polar Bears tallied a pair of goals within the first seven minutes of play en route to a 3-0 lead at the half. Fiskio started the contest in the cage with five saves in the opening half, while senior Amy Haller (Pittsburgh, PA/Western Reserve Academy) stopped one shot in the second stanza.

Men's Soccer (3-2-0) Posts 1-1 Week, Defeats Bridgewater State

Wheaton, ranked sixth in the country and first in New England, began the week with a 2-1 victory at Bridgewater State in a non-conference contest. Playing in their fifth consecutive road game Saturday afternoon, the Lyons dropped a 3-2 decision to Keene State.

On Wednesday, Wheaton outshot Bridgewater State, 29-4, however the game was not decided until the 88th minute when sophomore Gabe Margolis (Brookline, MA/Beaver Country Day) found senior Dan Antoniuk (Philadelphia, PA/Central) in front of an open net for the game-winning goal. The Lyons opened the scoring in the 20th minute, as senior Hans Ingram (St. Maarten, NA/Northfield Mount Hermon) assisted on a Shaun Cavanaugh (Newtown, CT/Newtown) goal. Wheaton continued to apply pressure in the second half, but it was the Bears that capitalized with an equalizing goal midway through the stanza. Wheaton goalkeeper Craig Varrell (New Castle, NH/Portsmouth) improved to 3-1 with a pair of saves on the afternoon.

The Lyons again opened the scoring at Keene State, this time with 11 minutes to play in the opening half. Junior John Chronis (Danvers, MA/Beaver Country Day) rifled a shot that deflected off the crossbar onto a waiting Antoniuk, who headed in his third goal of the season. The game remained a one-goal margin until the 78th minute, when the Owls tallied three goals in a ten-minute span to take a 3-1 advantage. Wheaton closed the margin to 3-2 with a minute to play, thanks to a goal from senior Jason Percy (Plymouth, MA/Plymouth South). Classmate David Wurm (Dunstable, MA/Groton-Dunstable) picked up the assist on the play. The Lyons held a 17-8 advantage in shots.

Women's Soccer (4-1-0) Finishes Texas Road Trip with 1-1 Mark

Wheaton, ranked eighth in the country and second in New England, took to the road for a two-game trip in Texas over the weekend. Friday night featured a pair of nationally-ranked programs, as the Lyons fell to the seventh-ranked Tigers of Trinity by a score of 2-1. On Sunday, Wheaton responded with a 1-0 victory at Southwestern.

In what turned out to be a very evenly matched contest, Wheaton and Trinity played to a 1-1 tie at the intermission. The Tigers struck first with a successful corner kick attempt in the ninth minute. The Lyons however responded on a sliding shot from junior Tracy Prihoda (Needham, MA/Needham). Sophomore Erin Brennan (Mesa, AZ/Xavier Prep) distributed the pass to Prihoda, who slipped her shot under the diving Trinity goalkeeper. The Tigers picked up the eventual game-winning goal six minutes into the second half. Wheaton junior goalie Jessica Broomhead (Barrington, RI/Barrington) posted seven saves in her first action of the season.

On Sunday against Southwestern, the Lyons outplayed the Pirates through the game's entirety. Despite spending much of the opening half in the opposition's end of the field, Wheaton was unable to capitalize on its scoring opportunities. Following a scoreless first half, Wheaton broke the stalemate in the 62nd minute, as junior Christy McHugh (Salem, MA/Bishop Fenwick) lifted her right-footed shot over the outstretched reach of the Pirate goalie and into the bottom right corner of the net. Prihoda picked up her fifth assist of the season on the play. Broomhead earned her first shutout of the season with five saves. Wheaton held a 30-6 advantage in shots and 16-1 margin in corner kick attempts.

Wheaton had little difficulty with UMass-Dartmouth, as the Lyons set the tone early with 8-1 triumphs in the doubles competition. Senior Joline Jacques (Portland, OR/Riverdale) and sophomore Lauren Carmichael (Arlington, MA/Arlington) paired up at third doubles for the first time this season. First and second doubles consisted of senior Tanya Soares (Lincoln, RI/Lincoln) with freshman Mia Mathias (Boxford, MA/Pingree School) as well as junior Emily Dana (Hamilton, MA/Governor Dummer Academy) with sophomore captain Caitlin Amaral (Glocester, RI/Ponaganset).

Mathias and Amaral won their straight-set matches in the first and fourth singles positions, respectively, while sophomore Whitney Sirois (Presque Isle, ME/Presque Isle) collected a convincing 6-2, 6-1 victory at fifth singles.

The WPI match was no different, as the Lyons witnessed strong performances across the board, including an 8-0 triumph for Soares and Mathias at first doubles.
