Weekly LyonField Hockey (1-1) Splits First Two Games of 2002 SeasonThe Wheaton College field hockey team opened its 2002 campaign by splitting a pair of contests against Commonwealth Coast Conference opponents, New England College and Salve Regina. The Lyons fell to NEC, 2-0 in their home opener and then responded to defeat Salve, 2-0 on Thursday at Clark Field. On Thursday, the Lyons once again held their opponent scoreless through the first half, but in the process were also held without a goal in the first stanza. Wheaton's scoring drought ended nine minutes into the second half when Sciolto took a feed deep into Wheaton territory and found sophomore Melissa Busfield (Gloucester, MA/Gloucester) to give the Blue and White a 1-0 lead. A little over seven minutes later, Wheaton made it a 2-0 lead when junior Nicole Marchetto's (Amherst, MA/Amherst) shot deflected off the Salve goalkeeper and onto the waiting stick of Busfield, who netted her second goal of the contest. First-year goalkeeper Emily Fiskio (Branford, CT/Branford) and senior Amy Haller (Pittsburgh, PA/Western Reserve Academy) combined for the Wheaton shutout, stopping two and six shots, respectively. Men's Soccer (2-1-0) Wins Opener, Splits Pair at Diadora ShowdownThe Wheaton College men's soccer team, ranked fifth in the country according to the National Soccer Coaches Association (NSCAA), won its 2002 opener at Salve Regina before splitting a pair of games at Keene State's Diadora Soccer Showdown this past weekend. The Lyons defeated the Seahawks, 3-0 on Friday, August 30 in Newport, RI. After dropping a 1-0 decision to sixth-ranked Rowan (NJ) this Saturday in Keene, NH, Wheaton responded to post a 6-1 triumph versus Hobart (NY) on Sunday. Against Salve Regina, junior forward Matt Mancini (Westford, MA/Westford Academy) didn't waste any time breaking into the scoring column, as he gave Wheaton an early 1-0 lead in the third minute of play. Senior midfielder Hans Ingram (St. Maarten, NA/Northfield Mount Hermon) provided the assist on the corner kick conversion. Ingram extended the Wheaton advantage to 2-0 just three minutes later, thanks to the helper by senior forward Dan Antoniuk (Philadelphia, PA/Central). The Lyons saw their lead bulge to 3-0 seven minutes into the second half, as senior midfielder Shaun Cavanaugh (Newtown, CT/Newtown) took a deflected rebound from Mancini and slipped his shot by the Seahawk goalie. Wheaton goalkeeper Craig Varrell (New Castle, NH/Portsmouth) recorded five saves in preserving his first collegiate shutout. The Lyons held a 29-6 advantage in shots. On Saturday, Wheaton had the better of the scoring opportunities in the opening half, as Cavanaugh and senior Jason Percy (Plymouth, MA/Plymouth South) were both denied by the Rowan goalie. Following the game's lone goal in the 71st minute of the second half, Antoniuk and junior George Thomas (Canton, MA/Canton) had chances to knot up the contest in the closing minutes, but both of their shots sailed over the cross bar. Varrell finished the game with six saves. The Lyons outshot the Profs, 17-15, while the corner kick attempts were even at 10 apiece. Wheaton opened the scoring against Hobart in the 15th minute, as Wheaton senior David Wurm (Dunstable, MA/Groton-Dunstable) triggered the offense. Wurm received a pass from Antoniuk and then headed the ball past the Hobart goalkeeper for the 1-0 edge. The Statesmen were able to even the score at one goal apiece with the help of Varrell. Varrell mishandled a shot and put it into the back of his own net. The Lyons then took the lead for good in the 44th minute, as Antoniuk took a Mancini pass for the 2-1 advantage. In the second half, Wheaton tallied four goals in the final 20 minutes, beginning with Ingram's goal from Antoniuk in the 71st minute. The Blue and White added another tally on a penalty kick from Cavanaugh followed by Wurm's second goal of the afternoon. Sophomore Matt Ristuccia (Newton, MA/Newton North) completed the scoring in the 89th minute by taking a feed from Eric Danner (Pembroke, MA/Silver Lake). Women's Soccer (3-0-0) Captures Inaugural Adidas Kick-Off Classic TournamentThe Wheaton College women's soccer team, ranked eighth in the nation according to the NSCAA, began the 2002 season just as it did in 2001, winning early and often. The Lyons opened the season by hosting the Adidas Kick-Off Classic Tournament, which featured a pair of 2001 NCAA Tournament participants in Endicott and Oneonta State (NY) and Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Tournament squad Montclair State (NJ). Wheaton captured the inaugural title, posting a 3-0 victory over Endicott before coming from behind to defeat Oneonta State, 3-2. The Lyons finished the week with a 5-0 shutout over Plymouth State. The Lyons scored a minute and a half into the second stanza, when sophomore Erin Brennan (Mesa, AZ/Xavier Prep) tucked McHugh's pass under the crossbar, giving the Blue and White a 3-0 lead. Wheaton's 20 dressed players all saw action against the visitors, as the Lyon defense closed out the contest by holding the Gulls to two shots. In her Wheaton debut, first-year goalkeeper Emily Lipsky (Whitestone, NY/Sacred Heart Academy) recorded two saves in the shutout. In the second game of the tournament, Prihoda spearheaded a Wheaton come-from-behind victory in the final 18 minutes of regulation. The hosts didn't waste any time getting on the scoreboard, as first-year Teresa Lebel (Middletown, MA/Northfield Mount Hermon) posted her first collegiate goal in the fourth minute on an assist from sophomore Christy Schneider (Jonesboro, GA/Jonesboro). The Red Dragons knotted up the game at the 35:34 minute mark. Continuing to play nip-and-tuck in the second half, Oneonta captured its first lead of the contest at the 54:00 minute mark. Wheaton found the equalizer with just over 17 minutes remaining on a nifty give-and-go play between Prihoda and McHugh. With just over six minutes to play, a shot by sophomore Beth Caromile (Warwick, RI/Pilgrim) managed to ricochet off a couple of Oneonta defenders and through the goal box onto the waiting foot of Prihoda for the game-winning goal. Lipsky made eight stops for Wheaton in goal. On Saturday against Plymouth State, Brennan took over the game by registering three first-half goals as the Lyons routed the Panthers, 5-0. The Lyon scoring parade began with Caromile, who got the offense started at the 11:56 minute mark with a rifling shot to give Wheaton a 1-0 lead. Brennan then got hot in the 18th minute when she took a Prihoda pass at midfield and beat the Plymouth keeper on the breakaway to give the hosts a 2-0 advantage. Brennan then headed a crossing pass from McHugh at 20:32 and completed her hat trick at 29:04, as Caromile assisted on the play to give the Lyons a 4-0 cushion. Wheaton continued to pour it on offensively a little over a minute and a half later, as junior Sheila LaCambra (Walnut Creek, CA/Northgate) tucked a Prihoda cross just over the goal line. Junior Emily Dana (Hamilton, MA/Governor Dummer Academy) and sophomore captain Caitlin Amaral (Glocester, RI/Ponaganset) had little difficulty in the second spot with an 8-1 triumph, while senior Joline Jacques (Portland, OR/Riverdale) and sophomore Whitney Sirois (Presque Isle, ME/Presque Isle) combined for an 8-5 win at third doubles. Madeira had the strongest singles showing of the afternoon, winning the first set, 6-3 before dropping the second set and tiebreaker.
