Lyons Athletic Club Team CompetitionThe Wheaton College Department of Athletics kicked off its Spring Weekend by announcing its baseball program won the inaugural Lyons Athletic Club (LAC) Strength in Numbers Challenge, a friendly competition between varsity teams to see which can achieve the highest alumnae/i rate of participation in the LAC. The winner was determined by the percentage of alumnae/i who participated, not by the dollar amount raised. Baseball, which began its varsity program in spring 1998, turned out a 41.1 percent success rate. Softball placed second at 28.45 percent, while women's basketball was third at 12.22. A total of 253 donors contributed to the inaugural challenge. By finishing first among the designated 16 programs, baseball's 32 players will receive a gift provided by the athletic department. Donations to the LAC were split 50-50. Half of the gift was credited directly to the team's account, while the other half supports the athletic department's general operating budget and counts in Annual Fund participation and dollar numbers. The LAC was formed in the fall of 2006 in order to enhance the relationship between the college's athletic programs and its alumnae/i, parents and friends. The alliance of Wheaton boosters helps provide much-needed financial support for Wheaton's intercollegiate athletic teams and increase overall participation in the Annual Fund.
