Lyons fall to fourth ranked team of season, drop contest at Amherst

April 17, 2008

AMHERST, MA- Wheaton College trailed nationally-ranked Amherst College just 3-1 nearly nine minutes into Thursday evening's women's lacrosse contest before yielding nine straight markers before the end of the first half during a 17-5 loss at Gooding Field. The Lyons, now 6-8, have suffered four of their losses to teams ranked by the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA). Number-nine Amherst improved to 10-1.

After the Lord Jeffs took a 3-0 lead by the 6:01 mark of the opening half, Lyon senior Sara Dimick (Cumberland, ME/Greely) responded 29 seconds later to make it 3-1. Just over two minutes ticked off the clock before Amherst found the back of the net again, as the hosts scored the next three goals over a 56-second span and the subsequent three in a 1:25 stretch to begin a 9-0 run.

The Lord Jeffs led at halftime, 12-1 before Wheaton held with Amherst in the second half, scoring four of the period's nine goals. Junior Caitlin Grant (Walpole, MA/Walpole) tallied twice, while Dimick and sophomore Brittany King (Georgetown, MA/Proctor Academy) notched one marker apiece, but the Lyons never whittled their deficit to less than 10.

Dimick and Grant finished with two goals each, while freshman goalies Annalisa Carson (Yarmouth, ME/Yarmouth) and Marianna Marcellino (Milton, MA/Thayer Academy) combined to make six saves. Each played nearly 30 minutes.

For Amherst, junior Amy Craig (Denver, CO/George Washington) and sophomore Christina Hopkins (Montclair, NJ/Montclair) had four goals apiece, while junior Mary Noonan (West Roxbury, MA/Winsor School) turned in four helpers. Senior Linda McEvoy (Rochester, NY/Brighton) made two first-half saves before freshman Caroline Burke (Brookline, MA/Winsor School) had four stops in the second stanza.

The Lyons complete their New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) slate on Saturday at Smith College at 11:30 a.m.
