Wheaton holds close with Wellesley before Blue pulls away in second halfApril 8, 2008 WELLESLEY, MA- The Wheaton College women's lacrosse team trailed defending New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament runner-up Wellesley College by three at halftime before the Blue pulled away to defeat the Lyons, 13-5 on Tuesday. Wheaton slipped to 5-7 overall and 1-3 in the league, while Wellesley is 7-3 and 3-0. Senior Alexa Jurczak (Davidsonville, MD/Miss Porter's School) erased a 1-0 Blue advantage with a tying marker 2:11 into the contest before Wellesley forged a 4-0 run over a 4:21 span, but the Lyons battled back. Junior Abbie Sherwin (Rye, NH/Portsmouth) tallied at 16:37 of the opening stanza before classmate Madeline Williams (Annapolis, MD/Key School) found the back of the net at 13:28 to bring the visitors within 5-3. Wellesley responded with consecutive free-position goals before senior Sara Dimick (Cumberland, ME/Greely) cut Wheaton's deficit to 7-4 just 2:01 before halftime. The Blue clamped down defensively in the second half, as Dimick's marker with 19:34 remaining in regulation proved to be the Lyons' lone tally. Wellesley scored its first three goals of the stanza in a 2:34 span before Dimick scored, and the hosts tacked on three more to complete a 6-1 showing during the period. Dimick's two goals led Wheaton, while freshman Annalisa Carson (Yarmouth, ME/Yarmouth) made 12 saves. For Wellesley, sophomores Colette Whitaker (Great Falls, VA/Langley) and Loretta White (Northampton, MA/Northampton) scored six and four goals, respectively. Junior Kristin Jaronczyk (Manhasset, NY/Manhasset) had nine stops. Wheaton has a week off before hosting Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) next Tuesday at 5:00 p.m. in a NEWMAC contest.
