April 6, 2008

NORTON, MA- The Wheaton College women's lacrosse team picked up its first New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) victory of the spring Sunday afternoon with a 20-10 triumph over visiting Mount Holyoke College at Keefe Field.

In a game that was originally slated for Saturday but pushed back a day due to unplayable field conditions, the hosts led throughout to improve to 5-6 overall and 1-2 in league play. Mount Holyoke fell to 1-7 and 0-3.

Wheaton tallied the contest's first six goals in the opening 10:36, led by junior Caitlin Grant's (Walpole, MA/Walpole) hat trick during a 6:21 span. Classmate Madeline Williams (Annapolis, MD/Key School) also found the back of the net twice in Wheaton's game-opening 6-0 run. Mount Holyoke broke into the scoring column 12 seconds after Grant's third goal, when junior Susanna Wilcox (Wales, UK/Howell's School, Llandaff) tallied the first of her two goals.

The Lyons responded with six of the contest's next eight tallies in taking a commanding 12-3 advantage with 4:03 to play before halftime, as the hosts rattled off their last three in 41 seconds. Mount Holyoke stormed back to score four times in the final 1:35 of the opening stanza, and another tally just 32 seconds into the second half made it 12-8. Wheaton answered with three quick goals while outscoring the visitors, 8-2 in the final 27:33.

Wheaton senior Meredith Hurd (Bath, ME/Hyde School) led all scorers with five goals, while Grant and Williams finished with four apiece. First-year goalies Annalisa Carson (Yarmouth, ME/Yarmouth) and Marianna Marcellino (Milton, MA/Thayer Academy) split halves, with Carson earning the win after stopping three first-half shots. Marcellino accounted for four saves in relief.
