Women's lacrosse succumbs to 10th-ranked Bowdoin, 14-4 in home openerMarch 26, 2008 NORTON, MA- After playing its first seven games away from Norton, the Wheaton College women's lacrosse team opened its home slate Wednesday afternoon with a 14-4 loss to nationally-ranked Bowdoin College at Keefe Field. The Lyons fell to 4-4 overall, while the Polar Bears, ranked 10th nationally by the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA), improved to 5-2. Junior Madeline Williams (Annapolis, MD/Key School) put the hosts in front early with a tally 2:43 into play before goals by four different Bowdoin players during a 4:13 stretch gave the Polar Bears the lead for good. Senior Lyndsey Colburn (Concord, NH/Concord), who led all scorers with seven tallies, knotted the score at 24:15 before classmate Bobbi Dennison (Freeport, ME/North Yarmouth Academy) connected on the go-ahead goal 52 seconds after that. Junior Bridget Thornton (Southington, CT/Cheshire Academy) cut Wheaton's deficit to two midway through the first half, but Colburn responded with back-to-back scores for a 6-2 Polar Bear advantage with 10:59 to go before the break. Williams found the back of the net for the second time at the five-minute mark before Bowdoin scored twice 39 seconds apart for an 8-3 lead. Sophomore Brittany King's (Georgetown, MA/Proctor Academy) goal with 17.8 seconds on the clock brought the Lyons within 8-4 at halftime. The Polar Bears stymied the Wheaton offense in the second half, outscoring the Lyons, 6-0 behind a trio of free-position goals. Bowdoin finished the game with seven free-position tallies. Aside from Colburn's seven goals, freshman Ingrid Oelschlager (Roanoke, VA/Phillips Exeter Academy) posted two tallies, while five other Polar Bears broke into the scoring column. Wheaton freshman goalie Annalisa Carson (Yarmouth, ME/Yarmouth) was credited with 15 saves in the loss, while junior Steph Collins-Finn (Menands, NY/Albany Academy) turned aside eight shots for the Polar Bears.
