Grant's career day pushes Wheaton to 17-12 victory at Bridgewater StateMarch 24, 2008 BRIDGEWATER, MA- Junior Caitlin Grant (Walpole, MA/Walpole) turned in a career-best six goals Monday afternoon at Bridgewater State College, leading the Wheaton College women's lacrosse team to a 17-12 non-league win at Swenson Field. The Lyons raised their record to 4-3, while the Bears evened their mark at 2-2. Outside of a short-lived 1-0 deficit and 1-1 tie, Wheaton led for the majority of the game, turning its one-goal disadvantage into a 2-1 lead over a 52-second span. Grant's initial tally 5:35 in knotted the score, and sophomore Brittany King's (Georgetown, MA/Proctor Academy) goal put the visitors in front for good. Bridgewater State managed to narrow the gap to one on two occasions, with the latter coming at the 12:11 mark of the opening stanza, but four straight Lyon goals made the score 9-4 with 4:40 to go before halftime. The Bears received their fifth goal of the game 1:16 later before Wheaton entered the break with a four-goal edge. Grant's fifth score of the contest came 42 seconds into the second half, as the Lyons doubled up the hosts, 10-5. Bridgewater State got to within three a trio of occasions but came no closer. Junior Madeline Williams' (Annapolis, MD/Key School) two goals during a 3-1 spurt gave the Blue and White a 14-9 advantage with 10:15 on the clock. Thanks to three straight tallies from Grant and seniors Meredith Hurd (Bath, ME/Hyde School) and Simone Safyer (New Rochelle, NY/The Masters School), Wheaton enjoyed its largest lead of 17-10 at the 6:44 mark. The Bears scored the game's final two goals. Aside from Grant's career day, King finished with four goals, while Hurd accounted for two tallies and a pair of assists. Williams was Wheaton's fourth multiple-goal scorer, and freshman Emma Doyle (Hamden, CT/Hamden) added two assists. Freshman goalies Annalisa Carson (Yarmouth, ME/Yarmouth) and Marianna Marcellino (Milton, MA/Thayer Academy) combined to make 11 saves, with Marcellino earning her first collegiate win after stopping five shots in roughly 40 minutes. Senior Alison Gugliotta (Norwood, MA/Norwood) paced the Bears with four points, while freshman Courtney Lennon (Medfield, MA/Medfield) had three.
