Tufts hands Wheaton women 21-6 loss in non-conference lacrosse actionMarch 18, 2008 MEDFORD, MA- The Wheaton College women's lacrosse team trailed by two goals up until the 18:19 mark of the opening half at New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) foe Tufts University before giving way to the Jumbos, 21-6 on Tuesday at Bello Field. The Lyons now own a .500 mark at 3-3, while Tufts improved to 2-1. Senior Sara Dimick's (Cumberland, ME/Greely) feed to junior Caitlin Grant (Walpole, MA/Walpole) 4:19 into play halved a Wheaton deficit that stood until the host reeled off four straight goals to hold a 6-1 lead midway through the opening stanza. A tally by junior Madeline Williams (Annapolis, MD/Key School) brought the Lyons within four, but another four-goal spurt made it a 10-2 game with 7:11 left before the break. Tufts took a comfortable 13-4 advantage into the half. Junior Bridget Thornton (Southington, CT/Cheshire Academy) scored the second half's opening tally on a free-position shot to pull Wheaton within eight, but five straight Jumbo goals over 11:19 put the game out of reach. Junior Courtney Thomas (Needham, MA/Needham), who scored three of Tufts' final four tallies, finished with a game-best seven goals. Freshman Emma Doyle (Hamden, CT/Hamden) paced Wheaton with a pair of goals. Thornton and Williams each provided a goal and an assist, while Grant and senior Meredith Hurd (Bath, ME/Hyde School) also scored. In addition to Thomas' seven-goal showing, junior Maya Shoham (West Hartford, CT/Hall) totaled three goals and two assists, and senior Sarah Williams (Bethesda, MD/Bullis School) turned in a pair of tallies and three helpers. Senior Alyssa Corbett (Malvern, PA/Great Valley) posted a hat trick. Freshman goalie Annalisa Carson (Yarmouth, ME/Yarmouth) recorded a season-best 19 saves in the loss, while first-year keeper Sara Bloom (Summit, NJ/Summit) had four stops for the Jumbos. Wheaton's season-opening six-game road swing came to a close today, as the Lyons now turn their attention to nationally-ranked Wesleyan University for Thursday's home opener at 4:30 p.m. Wesleyan currently stands 13th in the latest Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) poll.
