11-0 run sends Lyons past Salve Regina during Texas trip, 22-9March 16, 2008 IRVING, TX- Behind 11 consecutive goals to end the first half, the Wheaton College women's lacrosse team downed regional foe Salve Regina University, 22-9 on Sunday at the University of Dallas's Crusader Field. The Lyons moved to 3-2 and finished up a two-game set at the University of Dallas, having also defeated the host Crusaders on Friday. Salve Regina fell to 0-2. Seahawk junior Brittany Marino (Mount Sinai, NY/Mount Sinai) scored the game's first goal after 5:13, and Lyon sophomore Brittany King (Georgetown, MA/Proctor Academy) knotted the contest just 17 seconds later before junior Whitney Loeb (Hollis, NH/Bishop Guertin) made it 2-1 in favor of Salve Regina at the 6:45 mark. From there, Wheaton controlled the remainder of the period. Three Lyons scored during a 2:52 span to give the Blue and White a 4-2 edge and, after the Seahawks cut their deficit in half with 18:00 to go until halftime, Wheaton went on an 11-0 run. King had three more goals during that time, while senior Meredith Hurd (Bath, ME/Hyde School) and junior Caitlin Grant (Walpole, MA/Walpole) tacked on two apiece. After the Lyons held a 42-7 advantage in shots during the opening stanza, the second half proved to be more balanced. The Lyons took 12 of the period's 23 shots and outscored the Seahawks, 7-6. For the game, Wheaton held a 54-18 advantage in shots. King finished with five goals and an assist, while Hurd had four goals and two helpers. Grant added three goals and an assist, while juniors Abbie Sherwin (Rye, NH/Portsmouth), Bridget Thornton (Southington, CT/Cheshire Academy) and Madeline Williams (Annapolis, MD/Key School) scored two goals each. Junior Nicole Fecteau (Wilbraham, MA/Minnechaug Regional) led Salve Regina with two goals and two assists, while Marino and freshman Nicole Viola (Scarborough, ME/Catherine McAuley) tacked on two goals apiece. In goal, freshman Annalisa Carson (Yarmouth, ME/Yarmouth) improved to 3-1 on the season for the Lyons behind nine saves. Freshman Bridget McCaughey (Albany, NY/Academy of the Holy Names) turned aside 14 shots for Salve Regina. The Lyons return to action on Tuesday at Tufts University at 5:00 p.m. The Jumbos received votes in last week's Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) national poll.
