Lyons struggle at nationally-ranked Colby, suffer second consecutive loss

WATERVILLE, ME- The Wheaton College women's lacrosse team ran up against the 14th-ranked team in the country Tuesday afternoon, as the Lyons suffered an 18-2 non-conference setback to Colby College on Alfond Field. Wheaton moves to 1-2 in falling for the second consecutive game, while the Mules even their mark at 1-1.

The Lyons surrendered nine goals in each half, scoring twice in the opening stanza. Freshmen Tess Meyer (Concord, NH/Concord) and Kathryn Sudbey (Sandy Hook, CT/Newtown) recorded Wheaton's lone two goals.

First-year goalie Marianna Marcellino (Milton, MA/Thayer Academy) had four saves with six goals allowed in her first collegiate start, while classmate Annalisa Carson (Yarmouth, ME/Yarmouth) was credited with seven stops while surrendering 12 goals in 45:28 of relief.

For Colby, junior Kate Sheridan (Hingham, MA/Tabor Academy) tallied a game-best eight points on three goals and five assists. Classmate Lauren Strazzula (Norwell, MA/Norwell) and sophomore Caroline Atwater (Catonsville, MD/Roland Park Country Day) each recorded hat tricks, as 10 different Mules broke into the scoring column.

Sophomore goalkeeper Keryn Meierdiercks (Oyster Bay, NY/Holy Trinity) made two stops while yielding Wheaton's goals in the opening half, and freshman Sarah Warnke (Lakeville, CT/Westminster) accounted for five saves while keeping the Lyons off the board in the second frame.

Wheaton heads to Texas over the weekend, when the Lyons play at the University of Dallas on Friday at 4:00 p.m. Two days later, the Blue and White square off against Salve Regina University at Dallas at 10:00 a.m.
