Lyons see early lead disappear in 15-9 non-league loss to host Gordon

March 8, 2008

WENHAM, MA- The Wheaton College women's lacrosse team sprinted to a 3-0 advantage 1:45 into play Saturday afternoon at Gordon College, but the Lyons relinquished their lead for good before the midway point of the opening half in suffering a 15-9 setback at Brigham Athletic Complex. Wheaton saw its record slip to 1-1 on the young season, while the Fighting Scots opened their spring campaign today.

Senior Sara Dimick (Cumberland, ME/Greely) and juniors Caitlin Grant (Walpole, MA/Walpole) and Bridget Thornton (Southington, CT/Cheshire Academy) provided the visitors with the quick three-goal edge before Wheaton succumbed to five straight Gordon tallies during 7:42. Sophomore Brittany King (Georgetown, MA/Proctor Academy) brought the Lyons to within 5-4 at the 6:02 mark, but the host rattled off the frame's final three goals for an 8-4 cushion at the break.

The Fighting Scots tacked on two more tallies after the intermission to lead 10-4 with 28:43 left. Grant capped a quick 3-0 spurt over 2:18 that helped Wheaton trim its deficit to 10-7, but freshman Veronica Pierce (West Hartford, CT) responded with back-to-back scores and Gordon led 12-7 at the 11-minute mark. Thornton closed the gap to 12-8 before the Fighting Scots connected on three of the game's final four tallies.

Grant, King and Thornton accounted for two goals apiece, with Thornton adding one of three Wheaton assists on the afternoon, while freshman goalkeeper Annalisa Carson (Yarmouth, ME/Yarmouth) was credited with 10 stops.

For Gordon, junior Annie Cameron (South Hamilton, MA) did most of the damage with four goals and three assists. Pierce had a hat track and one assist, while sophomore Katie Knaus (Kensington, CT) chipped in with three goals and an assist. Junior Danielle Zorn (Mercer Island, WA) also had three scores. Junior goalie Chyanne Wilson (Pearl River, NY) turned aside 12 shots in the win.

Wheaton heads to Waterville, Maine, on Tuesday, as the Lyons prepare to face Colby College, which is ranked 13th in the most recent Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) poll. Game time is set for 4:30 p.m.
