Five hat tricks push Wheaton past Emerson in season openerMarch 6, 2008 SMITHFIELD, RI- Five different players netted hat tricks for the Wheaton College women's lacrosse team, as the Lyons opened the season with a 19-4 victory over Emerson College on Thursday night under the lights at Bryant University's Turf Field Complex. Wheaton has won four of its past five season openers and took the first meeting between the teams during what was also Emerson's first contest of the spring. During the Lyons' first opener played in New England since 2003, Wheaton tallied the first two goals of the contest by the 6:08 mark of the first half. Emerson senior Kristina Walles (Merrimack, NH/Merrimack) made it a 2-1 game at 8:47, but the Blue and White rattled off the next 10 goals of the contest to take a commanding 12-1 advantage, including 11-1 at halftime. Senior Meredith Hurd (Bath, ME/Hyde School) had three goals and an assist during the 10-0 run, while freshman Tess Meyer (Concord, NH/Concord) tallied two goals and two helpers. After Emerson received two straight goals from freshman Maeghan Ross (Wrentham, MA/King Philip Regional) during a 3:12 span to make it 12-3 with 18:40 remaining in regulation, Wheaton scored seven of the final eight goals, including three free-position markers. Freshman Kathryn Sudbey (Sandy Hook, CT/Newtown) tallied twice during the match-ending 7-1 run. First-year Emma Doyle (Hamden, CT/Hamden) notched a game-high four goals, Meyer finished with three goals and three assists, and Sudbey had three tallies, as this marked the fifth consecutive season at least one freshman notched a hat trick during the season opener. Hurd recorded three goals and two assists, as she moved into fourth place in Wheaton history for career goals (123) and into seventh for points (136). Junior Madeline Williams (Annapolis, MD/Key School) also finished with three markers, while classmate Caitlin Grant (Walpole, MA/Walpole) and sophomore Brittany King (Georgetown, MA/Proctor Academy) recorded one goal and one assist apiece. Senior Sara Dimick (Cumberland, ME/Greely) tallied during her first contest since 2006, as she missed last season while studying abroad. In goal, freshman Annalisa Carson (Yarmouth, ME/Yarmouth) made four saves in a little more than one half of work for the win, while classmate Marianna Marcellino (Milton, MA/Thayer Academy) stopped one second-half shot. Ross led Emerson with two tallies, while sophomore Meredith Tufts (Milton, MA/Thayer Academy) turned aside 16 Wheaton shots between the pipes.
