Trio of Lyons earns women's lacrosse all-conference honors

May 1, 2007

WORCESTER, MA- Junior Meredith Hurd (Bath, ME/Hyde School) earned a spot on the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) All-Conference first team for the second straight season, and the Wheaton College women's lacrosse squad had a pair named to the second team during Tuesday's postseason coaches meeting at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI).

Senior Kim Corbin (Branford, CT/Branford) and sophomore Abbie Sherwin (Rye, NH/Portsmouth) drew second-team laurels while giving the Lyons at least three all-conference players for the eighth straight season. Corbin was a first teamer in 2005, while Sherwin notched her first honor as one of only three all-conference sophomores, and one of 10 underclassmen.

Hurd not only led the Lyons with 37 goals and 42 points while tying for the team lead with five assists, but she turned in career highs in ground balls (27) and draw controls (21) from her attacking midfield spot. Hurd finished the regular season 10th in the league in tallies, averaging nearly three goals per game during conference play. She scored multiple goals in 11 games, including tallying a total of 11 goals in Wheaton's two one-goal wins. She was held without a point only three times this year, including twice against nationally-ranked foes. For the third consecutive spring, Hurd provided at least 34 markers, and she enters her senior year with 120 career goals and 131 points in 48 games.

As one of the team's two seniors, Corbin provided a veteran presence as a defensive midfielder and started all 15 games in which she appeared. She tied for first on the team with 33 ground balls and tied for third with 19 draw controls. Corbin collected at least one ground ball in each game she played. Her lone goal came against Springfield College, while one of her assists came versus Bridgewater State College. The Lyons won each of those contests by one goal in overtime.

Sherwin was one of five Lyons to start all 16 games this spring, as the defensive midfielder led her squad with 26 draw controls and tied for 10th in the league during the regular season in that category. Sherwin had career highs with 13 goals and 15 points, tallying at least once in seven of the Lyons' final nine games. She netted two hat tricks and recorded multiple draw controls on seven occasions.

Wheaton finished 4-12 this season, including 3-3 in the league. As the third seed in the NEWMAC Tournament, the Lyons came up short in the first round against Smith College, 10-7.
