Three first-half runs lift MIT women to 15-9 win over WheatonApril 17, 2007 CAMBRIDGE, MA- The Wheaton College women's lacrosse team fell behind early against host Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) before dropping a 15-9 decision in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game Tuesday night at Barry Field. The Lyons, who hadn't lost to MIT since 1999, dropped their fourth straight while falling to 3-10 overall and 2-3 in league play. The Engineers improve to 4-6 and 2-3. The hosts scored the game's first three goals, seven of the first eight and 12 of the first 14 to capture a commanding 12-2 halftime advantage. Junior Laura Watson (Bethpage, NY/Bethpage) and freshman Julia Roberts (Rockville, MD/Barrie School) tallied three times apiece in the first half to lead MIT. Sophomores Caitlin Grant (Walpole, MA/Walpole) and Madeline Williams (Annapolis, MD/Key School) scored for Wheaton. Engineer freshman Casey Flynn (Silver Spring, MD/Georgetown Visitation) found the back of the net for the third time to begin the second half before the Lyons scored three straight to make it 13-5 with 22:42 to go. The Blue and White narrowed its deficit to 15-8 with 7:30 remaining on Williams' fourth goal of the night, but it proved too little too late as Grant completed the scoring with time expiring. Williams led Wheaton with a career-high five points on four goals and one assist, while Grant and junior Meredith Hurd (Bath, ME/Hyde School) tallied twice each. Senior goalie Kristin Konig (Montecito, CA/Cate School) finished with 11 saves. Watson recorded five goals and one assist for the hosts, Flynn added four tallies and a helper, while Roberts posted a hat trick. Senior Hee Jay King (Old Tappan, NJ/Bergen County Academy) turned aside eight shots between the pipes. Wheaton turns back around tomorrow for a non-league home game against Amherst College at 4:30 p.m. The Lord Jeffs are ranked eighth nationally according to the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA).
