Fifth nationally-ranked team downs Wheaton, Lyons lose to Colby

April 15, 2007

NORTON, MA- The Wheaton College women's lacrosse team fell against its fifth ranked opponent this season, as the Lyons came up short against visiting Colby College, 18-3 on Sunday morning at Keefe Field. The Blue and White fell to 3-9, while the Mules are 6-4 and hold the 19th spot in the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) national poll.

Junior Lauren Barrett (Fairfield, CT/Greens Farm Academy) scored for the visitors 4:33 into the contest off a free-position shot to open the scoring, as Colby tallied the first eight goals of the contest. Colby's three markers after Barrett's came in a 2:14 span and the final four of the run occurred in 4:06.

Sophomore Abbie Sherwin (Rye, NH/Portsmouth) got the Lyons on the board at 6:44 of the first by converting classmate Caitlin Grant's (Walpole, MA/Walpole) pass, but the Mules scored the final three goals of the first half and the opening marker of the second half. Colby went up by as much as 18-2 by finding the back of the net five times in a matter of 7:28 before Grant scored unassisted at 11:40 for the final goal of the contest. With 10:25 to go in regulation and the Mules in control, the game was cut short due to deteriorating field conditions brought on by inclement weather.

Grant's goal and assist led Wheaton, while Sherwin and sophomore Madeline Williams (Annapolis, MD/Key School) tacked on single tallies. Senior Kristin Konig (Montecito, CA/Cate School) stopped seven shots.

For Colby, senior Courtney Drake (Falmouth, ME/Waynflete School) had four goals and two assists, while sophomore Kate Sheridan (Hingham, MA/Tabor Academy) added three goals and three helpers. Senior Allie Libby (Needham, MA/Needham) contributed two goals and five assists, while three additional Mules scored twice. In goal, senior Catharine O'Brien (Reading, VT/Hotchkiss School) and freshman Keryn Meierdiercks (Oyster Bay, NY/Holy Trinity) combined for six saves.

The Lyons head back into New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Tuesday at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) at 6:00 p.m.
