Visiting Wheaton hangs tough with 13th-ranked Wesleyan before falling, 11-6

April 12, 2007

MIDDLETOWN, CT- The visiting Wheaton College women's lacrosse team hung tough with national power Wesleyan University Thursday night at Smith Field before the Cardinals scored five unanswered goals to hand the Lyons an 11-6 non-conference loss. Wheaton, which played its fourth nationally-ranked opponent of the season, falls to 3-8, while Wesleyan, ranked 13th in the latest Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) poll, moves to 6-3.

The hosts started strong by rattling off three of the game's first four goals before Wheaton junior Meredith Hurd (Bath, ME/Hyde School) made it 3-2 with 13:53 to play in the opening half. After the Cardinals extended their lead back to two, freshman Brittany King (Georgetown, MA/Proctor Academy) and Hurd found the back of the net at 5:40 and 2:15, respectively, to knot the score. Wesleyan answered with the final goal of the stanza at 1:36, as the Cardinals used five different goal scorers en route to a 5-4 halftime edge.

Freshman Erin McCarthy (Ridgefield, CT/Ridgefield) became the sixth Wesleyan player to score a goal 1:03 into the second half, once again giving the Cardinals a two-goal advantage, but sophomore Bridget Thornton (Southington, CT/Cheshire Academy) and King tallied 1:01 apart to tie the game at six with 21:32 remaining. However, the rest of the half belonged to the hosts, who put together a four-goal stretch in 4:37 for a 10-6 cushion at 15:12. Wesleyan added an insurance tally at 9:43.

Hurd and King finished the game with two goals each for the Blue and White, while junior Alexa Jurczak (Davidsonville, MD/Miss Porter's School) provided a pair of assists. Senior goalie Kristin Konig (Montecito, CA/Cate School) made 19 stops in the loss.

For Wesleyan, senior Cortney Tetrault (Hatfield, MA/Phillips Academy) led all scorers with three goals and two assists. Freshman Elise Kaye (Sewickley, PA/Sewickley Academy) turned in a pair of tallies with one assist, while seniors Jen Bianculli (East Setauket, NY/Ward Melville) and Lauren Ogden (New Haven, VT/Middlebury Union) scored two goals apiece. Sophomore Rachel Stemerman (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville South) turned aside six Wheaton shots in net.

The schedule doesn't get any lighter for the Lyons over the weekend, as they welcome 19th-ranked Colby College to Keefe Field on Sunday for a 1:00 p.m. start.
