Lyons unable to overcome halftime deficit in 19-7 league loss to Wellesley

April 10, 2007

NORTON, MA- The Wheaton College women's lacrosse team was unable to overcome a 10-2 halftime deficit as the Lyons were handed a 19-7 loss to visiting Wellesley College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action Tuesday at Keefe Field. Wheaton, which had won three of its last four games, falls to 3-7 overall and 2-2 in the conference, while Wellesley, entering today's contest averaging 17 goals during a three-game winning streak, is now 9-3 and 4-0.

Wellesley freshman Haley Geller (Berkeley, CA/Berkeley) turned in a seven-goal, two-assist performance, including scoring three of the teams' first four tallies for a 4-1 lead midway through the opening half. Wheaton junior Alexa Jurczak (Davidsonville, MD/Miss Porter's School) knotted the game at one at the 27:32 mark before the visitors reeled off six straight goals and nine of the next 10 to secure a comfortable eight-tally halftime lead. Wellesley scored three times in the final 1:15 of the stanza, including two in a 42-second span by freshman Colette Whitaker (Great Falls, VA/Langley).

Jurczak and sophomore Madeline Williams (Annapolis, MD/Key School) scored the first two goals of the second half, as the hosts held Wellesley off the board for the first 11:44, but the Blue responded with a pair of tallies in pushing its lead back to eight. The Lyons got as close as 13-6 with 10:40 remaining before Wellesley strung together four straight goals to put the game out of reach.

Jurczak led the Wheaton offense with three goals, while senior goalie Kristin Konig (Montecito, CA/Cate School) took the loss after posting 10 saves.

In addition to Geller's stellar offensive showing, Wellesley senior Casey Logan (Scituate, MA/Thayer Academy) recorded four goals and three assists. Whitaker notched a hat trick, while sophomore goalie Kristin Jaronczyk (Manhasset, NY/Manhasset) had nine stops.
