Wheaton wins third game in four tries after 15-8 final at Mount HolyokeApril 7, 2007 SOUTH HADLEY, MA- The Wheaton College women's lacrosse team won for the third time in its last four games Saturday, as the Lyons captured their first road victory following a 15-8 final at Mount Holyoke College in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game. Wheaton improves to 3-6 on the season and 2-1 in league play, while Mount Holyoke falls to 2-6 and 0-3. After spotting the hosts a 2-0 lead, the Blue and White rattled off five of the game's next six goals to take a 5-3 lead with 8:47 to go in the first half. Junior Meredith Hurd (Bath, ME/Hyde School), who led all scorers with five goals, tallied twice during that stretch. Freshman Kristin Cody (Old Lyme, CT/Old Lyme) brought Mount Holyoke to 5-4 with 3:50 left, but two quick goals in a 17-second span by freshman Brittany King (Georgetown, MA/Proctor Academy) and sophomore Madeline Williams (Annapolis, MD/Key School) enabled the visitors to carry a 7-4 lead into the break. After the teams exchanged two goals apiece to begin the second half, Hurd and sophomore Abbie Sherwin (Rye, NH/Portsmouth) scored 1:26 apart for an 11-6 Wheaton advantage with 7:32 remaining. The Blue and White put the game out of reach by scoring four of the final five goals during a 3:28 span, as Hurd, Sherwin, junior Alexa Jurczak (Davidsonville, MD/Miss Porter's School) and sophomore Caitlin Grant (Walpole, MA/Walpole) each found the back of the net. Hurd was credited with an assist to finish with a game-best six points, King totaled three goals and one assist, while Sherwin added a hat trick. Freshman Hanna Landis (Cape Elizabeth, ME/Cape Elizabeth) contributed a goal and an assist, and senior goalie Kristin Konig (Montecito, CA/Cate School) turned aside 12 shots. Freshman Megan Wefald (Granger, IN/Penn) paced Mount Holyoke with four goals, Cody had two tallies, and junior Danielle Babcock (Lexington, MA/Lexington) posted a goal and a helper. First-year goalie Mimi Henry (Concord, MA/Concord-Carlisle) finished with nine saves in each half.
