Hurd tallies seven, including overtime winner, to push Lyons past BearsApril 5, 2007 NORTON, MA- Junior Meredith Hurd (Bath, ME/Hyde School) scored seven goals, including the winner with 50.5 seconds left in overtime, to push the Wheaton College women's lacrosse team past Bridgewater State College, 11-10 during non-conference action on Thursday at Keefe Field. The Lyons are now 2-6, having won both home games this year in overtime. The Bears saw their four-game win streak come to an end in falling to 4-3. Hurd, who tallied her 100th career goal earlier in the game, single-handedly rallied Wheaton late in regulation. With the hosts trailing, 10-8, Hurd scored with 47.7 seconds left and netted the tying marker with 24.4 ticks remaining to force the non-sudden-death extra session. In overtime, Hurd's winner came just seconds after Bridgewater State freshman goalie Jessica Cercone (Peabody, MA/Peabody) made the fourth of four crucial overtime saves to keep the score knotted up. Wheaton senior Kristin Konig (Montecito, CA/Cate School) also recorded a pair of clutch stops in the extra period, first in a tie game with 1:50 remaining and again with 15 seconds left to preserve the lead and squelch the Bears' final threat. Wheaton forged a 2-0 lead early in the opening half thanks to goals by Hurd and freshman Brittany King (Georgetown, MA/Proctor Academy) 1:29 apart, but Bridgewater State responded with the next five markers over an 6:50 span. Four different Bears scored, including junior Alison Gugliotta (Norwood, MA/Norwood) twice. The Lyons came back to tie the game with three straight goals, including two by Hurd 14 seconds apart with just under seven-and-a-half minutes to go. The second of those was Hurd's 100th. However, freshman Shannon Manning (Framingham, MA/Framingham) tallied with 4:01 left in the period to put the visitors on top, 6-5 at halftime, and the Bears scored 19 seconds into the second stanza to take a 7-5 edge. Hurd recorded the tying goal at the 18:34 mark, but junior Adrienne Berkland (Sharon, MA/Sharon) scored at 12:48 to put Bridgewater State back up by two. Sophomore Caitlin Grant (Walpole, MA/Walpole) brought the Lyons within 9-8 with 1:24 left in regulation before freshman Katie DeMaio (Port Jefferson Station, NY/Comsewogue) reestablished the Bears' two-goal lead 15 seconds later, setting up Hurd's heroics. Hurd's seven goals came on just 10 shots and were one shy of her career high. Four other Lyons tallied one marker apiece, while sophomore Bridget Thornton (Southington, CT/Cheshire Academy) notched a pair of assists. Konig stopped nine shots. For Bridgewater State, Gugliotta, Manning, senior Alicia Spolidoro (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury) and junior Lauryn Serratore (Norwood, MA/Norwood) led a balanced scoring effort with two goals apiece. Cercone finished with 15 saves.
