Wheaton women succumb to nationally-ranked league foe Babson, 21-6

April 3, 2007

BABSON PARK, MA- The Wheaton College women's lacrosse team struggled at nationally-ranked New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) foe Babson College Tuesday night, as the Lyons succumbed to the Beavers, 21-6 at MacDowell Field.

Wheaton falls to 1-6 overall and 1-1 in conference play with the loss, while the Beavers, ranked 13th nationally by Inside Lacrosse and receiving votes from the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA), won their third straight to improve to 6-2 and 2-0.

Babson, which entered the game averaging a league-best 14.29 goals, eclipsed that mark in the first half alone. The hosts scored the contest's initial four tallies through the first 5:41 of the opening half and didn't look back, using two other four-goal runs in the stanza to build a commanding 12-2 advantage. The Beavers had three different players net hat tricks en route to a 15-3 halftime lead.

Babson reeled off the second half's first four goals for a 19-3 cushion, as the Beaver defense limited Wheaton to one goal over a span of 30:28. Lyon junior Meredith Hurd (Bath, ME/Hyde School) scored at the 12:52 mark of the opening period and 12:22 of the second stanza. The Blue and White found the back of the net twice in the last 10:05 to cut the deficit to 20-6 before the Beavers closed out the scoring with a goal at 30 seconds.

Hurd and freshman Brittany King (Georgetown, MA/Proctor Academy) recorded two goals apiece to lead the Lyons, while sophomore Caitlin Grant (Walpole, MA/Walpole) contributed a goal and an assist.

Babson sophomore Jackie Godfrey (Franklin, MA/Franklin) led all scorers with five goals, while classmate Lindsay Bucci (Medford, MA/Beaver Country Day School) and freshman Kaitlyn Pettengill (Hopkinton, MA/Hopkinton) had four tallies apiece. First-year Anna Collins (Winchester, MA/Winchester) added two goals and two helpers.

Senior goalie Kristin Konig (Montecito, CA/Cate School) finished with six stops for Wheaton, while senior Jennie Williams (Andover, MA/Andover) picked up the win in net for Babson after registering seven saves.

Wheaton steps out of the conference Thursday afternoon for a home game against local opponent Bridgewater State College at 4:00 p.m.
