Women's lacrosse suffers 18-7 setback at sixth-ranked BowdoinMarch 27, 2007 BRUNSWICK, ME- The Wheaton College women's lacrosse team suffered an 18-7 non-conference setback at nationally-ranked Bowdoin College Tuesday afternoon at Ryan Field. The Lyons fell to 0-5 on the season, while the Polar Bears, ranked sixth in the latest Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) poll, improve to 4-2. The visitors trailed by an early five-goal deficit and didn't recover, as the teams entered the half with Bowdoin holding a comfortable 11-3 advantage. Junior Bridget Keating (Short Hills, NJ/Kent Place) led the Polar Bears with four first-half goals. Keating finished the game with a career-high five tallies. Sophomore Bridget Thornton (Southington, CT/Cheshire Academy) paced the Lyons with a hat trick, while classmate Caitlin Grant (Walpole, MA/Walpole) added a pair of goals. Bowdoin senior Taylor White (Wellesley, MA/Milton Academy) finished with three goals, classmate Kate Donoghue (Plandome, NY/Friends Academy) scored twice with two assists, and sophomore Emily Straus (Washington, DC/National Cathedral) added a goal and three helpers. Lyon senior goalie Kristin Konig (Montecito, CA/Cate School) saw plenty of action from the Polar Bear offense in recording 18 saves. Sophomore keeper Stephanie Collins-Finn (Menands, NY/Albany Academy) earned the Bowdoin win in net with five saves through the first half, while junior Kat Popoff (Old Lyme, CT/Choate Rosemary Hall) finished the game with nine second-half stops. The Lyons will search for their first victory during this Saturday's home opener against New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) rival Springfield College. Game time at Keefe Field is set for 1:00 p.m. Between the teams, Wheaton and Springfield have accounted for the last five league tournament titles.
