Wheaton narrowly falls to Drew, 8-6 in women's lacrosse action

March 13, 2007

ORLANDO, FL- The Wheaton College women's lacrosse team fell short of Drew University, 8-6 Tuesday afternoon, as the Lyons dropped their third consecutive game in the Sunshine State by two goals or less.

Wheaton, which is now 0-2 on the young season, succumbed to Stevens Institute of Technology, 13-12 on Sunday and 18-17 in overtime to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges on March 16, 2006. Winners in two straight games, Drew raised its overall mark to 2-1.

Junior Meredith Hurd (Bath, ME/Hyde School) provided the Lyons with a first-half goal to knot the game at two, but the Rangers scored the final two tallies of the frame en route to a 4-2 advantage at the break. Drew had four different players score goals in the half, including the last two from senior Courtney Cunningham (Garden City, NY/Our Lady of Mercy) and junior Meghan Santaniello (Somers Point, NJ/Mainland Regional).

In the second half, sophomore Caitlin Grant (Walpole, MA/Walpole) trimmed the Lyon deficit to one with a goal early in the stanza, but Cunningham started a three-goal Drew run as the Rangers extended their lead to 7-3. The teams traded goals to make the score 8-4, and Wheaton rounded out the game's scoring with two tallies in the last 1:03. After scoring three goals through the first 56:41, the Blue and White equaled that total in the final 3:19.

Grant led Wheaton with two goals, while Hurd, junior Alexa Jurczak (Davidsonville, MD/Miss Porter's School), sophomore Madeline Williams (Annapolis, MD/Key School) and freshman Brittany King (Georgetown, MA/Proctor Academy) each had one. Cunningham paced Drew with three goals, and senior Alexandra Bailly (Albany, NY/Academy of the Holy Names) tallied twice.

Wheaton senior goalkeeper Kristin Konig (Montecito, CA/Cate School) finished with seven saves in the loss. Freshman counterpart Stefanie Rutkowski (Wilmington, DE/Tower Hill School) stopped 11 Lyon shots for the Rangers.

Wheaton hopes to close out its spring trip on a high note Thursday afternoon against State University of New York at Geneseo at 12:00 p.m.
