Lyons squander five-goal lead in season opener against StevensMarch 11, 2007 ORLANDO, FL- The Wheaton College women's lacrosse team jumped out to an 11-6 advantage in the opening seconds of the second half Sunday afternoon against Stevens Institute of Technology before giving way to seven Duck goals en route to a 13-12 loss in its season opener. Stevens improved to 2-1 in the win. Freshman Brittany King (Georgetown, MA/Proctor Academy), who led the Lyons with five goals in her collegiate debut, gave the Blue and White a five-goal cushion 30 seconds into the second half. Stevens answered with three straight goals to whittle its deficit to 11-9, but King tallied her fifth and Wheaton's final goal with just under nine minutes to play. From that point forward, the Ducks sent home four straight goals within a 5:42 span. Sophomore Cassidy Callahan (Skaneateles, NY/Skaneateles Senior) netted back-to-back tallies to knot the score at 12 with 1:10 left, and freshman Katie Lalli (Princeton Junction, NJ/West Windsor-Plainsboro North) notched the game-winning goal with 30 seconds to play. The Lyons were unable to find the equalizer, as the Stevens defense limited Wheaton to a pair of second-half goals. In addition to King's scoring output, Lyon junior Meredith Hurd (Bath, ME/Hyde School) posted three goals and sophomore Bridget Thornton (Southington, CT/Cheshire Academy) accounted for two. Callahan paced the Ducks with four goals, Lalli finished with three tallies and freshman Alyssa Pigott (Jobstown, NJ/Northern Burlington) added three. Wheaton senior goalkeeper Kristin Konig (Montecito, CA/Cate School) was credited with 15 saves in the loss, while Stevens had two goalies split time. Junior Stephanie Linder (Eatontown, NJ/Monmouth Regional) stopped three shots in nearly 26 minutes action, while sophomore Grace Sack (Cazenovia, NY/Manlius Pebble Hill) turned aside eight shots during the remainder of play to earn the win. The Lyons will search for their first win Tuesday afternoon versus Drew University. Game time is slated for 1:30 p.m. This page is maintained by Scott Dietz. Last updated on 3/28/07. |
