Cronin, Hurd earn Berkshire regional women's lacrosse honorsMay 26, 2006 NORTON, MA- Wheaton College women's lacrosse standouts Molly Cronin (Brownsville, VT/Woodstock Union) and Meredith Hurd (Bath, ME/Hyde School) each earned the first Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Division III all-region selections of their respective careers. In being named to the second team on the Berkshire Region squad, the pair was among 212 student-athletes to be honored in seven regions. Those athletes are now eligible to make the IWLCA/US Lacrosse All-America teams, which will be announced on Tuesday. The IWLCA and US Lacrosse will honor the All-Americans at an awards banquet on June 10, 2006 in Baltimore. Cronin and Hurd, who each drew New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) accolades earlier this month, were among five NEWMAC players named to the 16-member Berkshire Region second team. A senior defender, Cronin anchored one of the best backfields in the NEWMAC, as the Lyons finished third in goals against average. Cronin started all 16 games, led Wheaton with 39 caused turnovers, finished second with 34 ground balls, and tied for fourth with 17 draw controls. She finished her career with 106 caused turnovers and 74 draw controls. Hurd, a sophomore attack, was a key component of the NEWMAC's most potent offense, tallying career highs of 49 goals, five assists and 54 points. While pacing the team in markers and points, Hurd also placed fourth with 12 caused turnovers. A member of the starting lineup for all 16 games, Hurd turned up the offense during the second half of the season. After scoring 16 goals in the first eight contests (2.0 goals per game), Hurd tallied her next 33 markers over the final eight games (4.1). Wheaton went 9-7 overall and 5-1 in the conference this spring, as the Lyons advanced to the NEWMAC Tournament title game for the fifth consecutive season. Wheaton placed second in the regular season conference standings. This page is maintained by Scott Dietz. Last updated on 1/31/07. |
