Five women's lacrosse players selected to NEWMAC All-Conference teamsMay 2, 2006 WORCESTER, MA- The Wheaton College women's lacrosse team had five players named to the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) All-Conference teams for the third straight season during Tuesday morning's postseason coaches meeting at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI). Two Lyons were voted to the first team and three to the second squad. Senior defender Molly Cronin (Brownsville, VT/Woodstock Union) and sophomore attacker Meredith Hurd (Bath, ME/Hyde School) were Wheaton's representatives on the first team, while senior attacker Julia Coit (South Portland, ME/South Portland), sophomore midfielder Sara Dimick (Cumberland, ME/Greely) and sophomore defender Alexa Jurczak (Davidsonville, MD/Miss Porter's School) comprised the second team. Cronin helped spearhead a Wheaton defense that finished third in the league in goals against average. She was among the NEWMAC's leaders in caused turnovers for the third consecutive season, ranking fifth with a team-best 39 forced giveaways. She was also second on the team with 34 ground balls and tied for fourth with 17 draw controls in 16 starts. Cronin was named to the all-conference first team as a junior. On the offensive end of the field, Hurd was a vital contributor to the NEWMAC's top-scoring team, leading the way with a career-best 49 goals and five assists. Ranking tied for third in the league in goals scored and tied for sixth with 54 points, Hurd is also third in goals per game (3.06) and tied for seventh in points per contest (3.38). She had one game-winning goal with 18 ground balls and 12 caused turnovers after starting in all 16 contests. Like Hurd, Coit also picked up all-conference team accolades for the first time, finishing tied for first on the Wheaton squad with nine assists and second in both goals (37) and points (46). Rattling off one goal and two assists in the NEWMAC Championship game, Coit finished her illustrious career ranked fourth in program history in goals (121), sixth in points (154) and seventh in assists (33). She also added 28 ground balls in 16 starts. Dimick, who was named to the NEWMAC All-Conference team for field hockey this past fall, turned in an all-around solid lacrosse season with 27 goals, 32 points, 29 ground balls and 27 draw controls. In 14 starts, she was third on the team in each goals, points and draw controls and tied for fourth in ground balls. Dimick paced the squad with three game-winning tallies and was second with six free-position goals. This conference award was Dimick's first for women's lacrosse. Named to the all-conference team for the initial time, Jurczak tied Dimick with 29 ground balls on the season while leading Wheaton with 51 draw controls. That total placed her second in the NEWMAC, as her 3.19 average was tops in the conference. Scoring 20 times in 15 starts and ranking fifth on the team with 23 points, Jurczak was third on the team with 19 caused turnovers in addition to her one game-winner. The five all-conference winners helped lead Wheaton and first-year head coach Mary Jacobs to its fifth consecutive NEWMAC Tournament title game, as the Lyons finished the season with a 9-7 record. Wheaton placed second in the regular season conference standings with a 5-1 mark. This page is maintained by Scott Dietz. Last updated on 1/31/07. |
