2006 NEWMAC WOMEN'S LACROSSE TOURNAMENT - Lyons advance to fifth straight title game after 15-12 win over Mount HolyokeApril 29, 2006 SPRINGFIELD, MA- Sophomores Sara Dimick (Cumberland, ME/Greely) and Alexa Jurczak (Davidsonville, MD/Miss Porter's School) posted season-high totals of five and four goals, respectively, to lead the number-two seed Wheaton College women's lacrosse team to its fifth consecutive New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament title game following Saturday afternoon's 15-12 victory over sixth seed Mount Holyoke College in semifinal round action at Springfield College. The Lyons advance to tomorrow's final against host and top seed Springfield, as the two teams get set to collide in the championship contest for the fifth successive year. Wheaton and Springfield, which defeated Babson College, 10-5 earlier today, have split the last four titles. The Lyons raised their overall record to 9-6, while Mount Holyoke finished its season at 8-10. Both teams played nip-and-tuck over the course of today's game, as neither squad held more than a three-goal advantage. The contest was also full of runs, with Mount Holyoke jumping out to a quick 3-0 lead before the Lyons strung together four tallies over a 3:31 span to take a 4-3 edge with 16:58 to play in the first half. Mount Holyoke knotted the contest at four, and after each team scoring twice for a 6-6 deadlock, Jurczak scored the half's final two goals in 2:47 to give Wheaton an 8-6 lead at the intermission. Lyon senior Julia Coit (South Portland, ME/South Portland) extended the lead to 9-6 with 29:02 to play, but freshman Marika Austin (Ashton, MD/Sandy Spring Friends) and senior Caitlin Taylor (Yarmouth, ME/Yarmouth) posted back-to-back goals to bring Mount Holyoke within one. Mount Holyoke brought the deficit to one on two other occasions, but Wheaton pulled away for good after scoring three of the game's final four goals during the last 7:18 of play. In addition to Dimick's and Jurczak's combined nine goals, sophomore Meredith Hurd (Bath, ME/Hyde School) tallied three times for the Lyons. Austin led all scorers with seven goals to pace Mount Holyoke, while Taylor finished with three tallies. Wheaton junior goalie Kristin Konig (Montecito, CA/Cate School) collected the win with 14 stops and senior Lauren Mulcahy (Norfolk, MA/King Philip) stopped 11 Lyon shots. 2006 NEWMAC WOMEN'S LACROSSE TOURNAMENT SCORING 1st 2nd Final Cumulative Scoring: Assists: WC- None; MHC- Austin, Anise Gold-Watts Goalkeeper Saves: WC- Kristin Konig 14; MHC- Lauren Mulcahy 11 This page is maintained by Scott Dietz.
