Trio of hat tricks sends Wheaton past MIT, 13-11 in NEWMAC finale

April 22, 2006

NORTON, MA- The Wheaton College women's lacrosse team completed its New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) slate with a 13-11 win over Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Saturday on Keefe Field. The Lyons, who already locked up the second seed in next week's league tournament, improved to 7-6 overall and 5-1 in the NEWMAC. MIT holds the fifth seed after falling to 4-7 and 2-4. The Engineers' seven losses have come by a total of 11 goals.

The teams went back and forth during the first half, as neither led by more than two goals. Senior Deanna Lentz (Gaithersburg, MD/Richard Montgomery) assisted on MIT's first two goals before scoring the Engineers' third, while five different players scored the Lyons' first five goals as Wheaton rallied twice from two-goal deficits to send the teams into halftime locked up at seven.

Lentz put the Engineers in front, 9-8 at 17:34 before Wheaton tallied five of the next six goals. Wheaton sophomore Sara Dimick (Cumberland, ME/Greely) knotted the score 1:25 after Lentz's goal, and classmate Meredith Hurd (Bath, ME/Hyde School) gave the Lyons the lead for good at 12:36. Senior Julia Coit (South Portland, ME/South Portland) pushed the hosts' advantage to 11-9, but Lentz tallied with 6:26 remaining to make it 11-10. However, freshman Bridget Thornton (Southington, CT/Cheshire Academy) and Hurd scored within a 1:29 span late in regulation to ice the victory.

Hurd led Wheaton with four goals and one assist, while Coit and Dimick each contributed hat tricks. Juniors Kristin Konig (Montecito, CA/Cate School) and Mary Catherine Boll (Columbus, IN/Miss Porter's School) combined for four saves, with Boll picking up her first collegiate win in relief.

Lentz finished the afternoon with three goals and two assists for the Engineers, while freshman Samantha O'Keefe (Carlisle, MA/Concord-Carlisle Regional) notched a hat trick. Junior Hee Jay Kang (Old Tappan, NJ/Bergen County Academy) made 12 saves.

Wheaton hosts seventh-seeded Smith College in the first round of the NEWMAC Tournament on Thursday at 4:30 p.m. The Lyons notched a 15-3 win over the Pioneers on March 26.
