April 19, 2006

AMHERST, MA- The Wheaton College women's lacrosse team capped the non-conference portion of its regular season slate with an 18-3 loss at nationally-ranked Amherst College on Wednesday. The Lyons are 6-6, while the Lord Jeffs, ranked eighth in this week's Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) poll, improved to 8-1.

Amherst scored the contest's first four goals by 24:02 of the first half before Wheaton freshman Bridget Thornton (Southington, CT/Cheshire Academy) tacked on a free-position shot at 14:41 to cut into the Lord Jeffs' lead. The hosts responded with three straight tallies before Lyon first-year Madeline Williams (Annapolis, MD/Key School) found the back of the net 23 seconds before halftime. Amherst led at the break, 7-2.

Wheaton kept with the Lord Jeffs early in the second stanza, as Thornton notched her second tally at the 23:17 mark to make the score 8-3. However, Amherst scored the game's final 10 goals, as six players tallied during a 14:49 span.

Thornton led the Lyons with two goals, and junior Kristin Konig (Montecito, CA/Cate School) made 13 stops. Amherst held a 35-9 advantage in shots, and junior Alyssa Briody (Hopewell, NJ/Princeton Day) led the Lord Jeffs with four goals and four assists. Freshman Amy Craig (Denver, CO/George Washington) tacked on a hat trick, and five other players scored twice apiece. Sophomore Linda McEvoy (Rochester, NY/Brighton) recorded three saves in nearly 43 minutes for the win.

The Lyons host their regular season finale on Saturday, as Wheaton opposes Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) contest at 1:00 p.m.
