Hurd's career-high eight goals leads Wheaton to 18-4 win over Babson

April 18, 2006

NORTON, MA- Sophomore Meredith Hurd (Bath, ME/Hyde School) registered a career-high eight goals to help the Wheaton College women's lacrosse team cruise to an 18-4 victory over New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) foe Babson College Tuesday at Keefe Field. The win gives the Lyons second place heading into next week's NEWMAC Tournament while improving their overall record to 6-5 and conference mark to 4-1. The Beavers suffered their third straight loss to fall to 9-6 and 3-2.

The Lyons broke a 2-2 tie off a tally from senior Julia Coit (South Portland, ME/South Portland) with 18:22 remaining in the first half and never looked back. The Coit tally started a seven-goal run that went until 2:14 of the opening stanza. During that key stretch, Hurd notched a hat trick, scoring the second, fourth and seventh goals of the run. Hurd's third goal came off a turnover she caused, as she proceeded to deposit the ball in the back of the net.

In that stretch, Wheaton also got two goals from sophomore Sara Dimick (Cumberland, ME/Greely) and a tally from freshman Madeline Williams (Annapolis, MD/Key School). Babson ended the run with a goal from freshman Lindsay Bucci (Mendon, MA/Beaver Country Day School) with 44 seconds left to leave the halftime score at 9-3.

Wheaton reeled off five goals to start the second half for a commanding 14-3 advantage with 17:15 remaining, as Hurd accounted for four goals over an 8:22 span. Her first came after she intercepted a clearing pass near the crease and slipped the ball into the back of the net, and Hurd scored again just 13 seconds later. Babson responded with a goal from sophomore Anita Martignetti (Winchester, MA/Winchester) to bring the Beavers within 10, but the hosts tallied the game's final four goals, including a pair from Coit, to round out the scoring.

Coit finished the game with a hat trick and two assists. Dimick also turned in a three-goal performance with one assist, Williams recorded two goals, and freshman Bridget Thornton (Southington, CT/Cheshire Academy) posted a goal and an assist. Bucci was the Beavers' lone multiple-goal scorer with a pair of tallies.

In goal, Lyon junior Kristin Konig (Montecito, CA/Cate School) made 10 saves, while Babson junior Jennie Williams (Andover, MA/Andover) was credited with 19 stops.

The Lyons take to the road tomorrow, when they face Amherst College at 4:00 p.m.
