Wheaton falls in non-conference women's lacrosse affair with WesleyanApril 13, 2006 NORTON, MA- The Wheaton College women's lacrosse team dropped a non-conference contest with Wesleyan University, 20-12 on Thursday at Keefe Field in the squads' first meeting in Norton since April 20, 1993. The Lyons fell to .500 at 5-5, while the Cardinals are now 8-3. Wesleyan got going offensively quickly, as senior Laura Siegle (Falmouth, ME/Waynflete School) tallied 13 seconds after the opening draw, but Wheaton sophomore Meredith Hurd (Bath, ME/Hyde School) netted the equalizer at 28:26. The Cardinals took over from there, depositing five goals during a 3:44 span to grab a 6-1 lead by 23:46, as senior Becky Meredith (Cockeysville, MD/Friends School) and junior Amanda Belichick (Weston, MA/Phillips Academy) scored twice apiece during that time. Freshman Caitlin Grant (Walpole, MA/Walpole) brought Wheaton within 6-2 at 18:33, but Wesleyan rattled off three more goals over a 43-second stretch with a little more than 10 minutes remaining in the half for a 9-2 cushion, and the visitors eventually took a 14-6 lead into intermission. Wheaton kept pace with the Cardinals during the second half, as each team scored six times. Down by an 18-9 count, the Lyons tallied three straight goals to cut into Wesleyan's lead, but the Cardinals tallied the final marker with less than a second remaining. Hurd led the Lyons with four goals, while freshman Madeline Williams (Annapolis, MD/Key School) scored twice. Freshman Bridget Thornton (Southington, CT/Cheshire Academy) tallied a goal and two assists, sophomore Alexa Jurczak (Davidsonville, MD/Miss Porter's School) added a goal and a helper, and junior Kristin Konig (Montecito, CA/Cate School) stopped 11 shots. Meredith finished with five goals and three assists, freshman Sarah Orkin (West Hartford, CT/Hall) had five goals, Belichick added four tallies and two helpers, and freshman Schuyler Swenson (Englewood, CO/Kent Denver School) tacked on a hat trick. Freshman Susan Gerhardt (Wayne, PA/Villa Maria Academy) and senior Kate Jones (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury) each made three saves in one half.
